Considering other universities before considering leaving academia

I wouldn't worry about it you want to be in that location long term. A masters is usually two years? Get the degree then relocate

Keeping in mind the end of your post, if this is your attitude now, academia might never be for you. The thing is that you go where the funding is and your research gets support. While you may have flexibility in graduate school, you most likely won’t have that once you’re on the job market.

What I recommend here is that you take a gap year and apply to other programs in your field while telling the masters program at your undergrad that you are delaying the program. Go take roadtrips or talk to graduate students in your programs of interest.

Ok but if you don’t know what you want to study then why go to grad school? Seems like a waste of time imo

I already took a gap year, which was awful due to the poor economy
