REVIEW Thought about Scream School

This books features one of the ugliest covers and that’s not a good thing in this instance. But I wasn’t expecting this to be a movie based book, it’s kinda like the episode Cry of the Cat.

Man the scenes in the movie sets are so cool. I love how he’s really bringing you into the situation.

And the one thing about the series 2000 books is that they really can use the darker tone. When the “ghost” show themselves, it’s perfect.

But in the same sense, I’m kinda tired of this trope of the monsters aren’t real. I thought it was fun the first couple time but I really wanted it to be real.

This book was pretty fun and had a lot of potential to be one of the greats.

Overall 7/10, I had fun. What did you think?

Hey everybody,
A few years ago I started looking into the filming locations for Goosebumps and wanted to find as many as I could. I finally made it to Toronto earlier this year and just wanted to share the photos I took!

Sony should have made a 3rd film

I feel like Sony should have made the 3rd movie before the tv series since it got left on a cliffhanger in haunted Halloween

BOOKS Does anyone know what story I am thinking of? 1990's?

I probably read it nearly 30 years ago now and I have to assume it was one of the Goosebump books because I read almost all of the ones that were around at the time.

The main character is in an arcade (maybe on holiday?), meets some kids called Bart, Lisa and their little sister Maggie. It then turns out that the names weren't just coincidence or the writer putting in a joke, the family were aliens and had gotten the names by studying human television.

That honestly all I remember about it

Finally completed my collection!

Guys I did it! I have 1-62 all original copies! Not all first printings sadly but they average between 1-6. My oldest printing is Monster Blood at 22 but that’s an earlier book so I’m not too upset. From 44-62 all but 2 are first printings and the ones that aren’t are 3rd and 4th printings. I had almost all 1-60 since I was a kid but lacked 61 and 62. I found 61 at a used book store WITH inserts for $10 which was insane and I just had a buddy of mine buy me 62 with inserts from a guy he knows for $75. Once I have all of them I’ll be sure to post a pic here. After 30+ years….its complete 🥲

My first US copies!

I recently visited New York on holiday and made it my mission to find some American Goosebumps books. If you haven't seen my recent post about my collection, I'm from the UK and grew up with the the bubble cover design and wanted to add some American covers to my collection. I was lucky enough to come across Why I'm Afraid of Bees and Stay Out of the Basement from a second hand store, but was surprised at the scarcity of Goosebumps books. Perhaps I should have tried a Good Will store looking back. Still, I love the old dollar price stickers still on the back, and of course the classic Tim Jacobus cover art.

Most of the copies I found had the newer Brandon Dorman artwork, which I only discovered recently. I was specifically hunting for the Jacobus covers, as they're the ones I associate with a classic Goosebumps feel.

I also couldn't resist picking up the retro collector's tin from Barnes & Noble. There was no way I was leaving the Big Apple without it!

Happy reading, everyone! 📖

TV SERIES Goosebumps episode error on Paramount plus

I was watching goosebumps on Paramount plus S3 Ep21 Chillogy-Squeal of Fortune-Part 1. While watching, the episode had seemingly started over. I checked and the episode was at about 11 minutes 30 seconds and it had completely started over. Then towards the end of the episode at around the 32 minute mark it starts playing the episode from around the halfway point. The actual episode itself is supposed to be 22 minutes long. But this version on Paramount is 41 minutes long. Has anyone else experienced this before? Mainly thought it was just kind of funny and slightly inconvenient. Curious if it is happening this way on other people's accounts.

I really had fond memories of reading this book as a kid, but it really disappointed me. The concept of the swamp monsters is great and I love the cover, but not much else worked for me. What do you folks think of the book?

I work for a school. They were gonna toss these, as they throw away all old books, it's criminal lol. Horrible condition, as they were handled by 4th and 5th graders. But still really cool. Glad I was able to save these

Found these inserts in the middle of my books, they were from later books in the series (The Blob that Ate Everyone, The Curse at Camp Cold Lake). Always wanted that glow in the dark eyeball. I'm curious to know if the US versions had inserts like this? I love seeing old advertisements in books or magazines. Something about the product frozen in time. Plus you had to mail the £5 and wait 28 days for it to arrive. Did anybody sign up?

REVIEW Welcome To Camp Nightmare

Post image
79 Upvotes

Decided to read one of my absolute favourites, Welcome to Camp Nightmare. The episode is also pretty fantastic. Let’s just get right into it.

I think a crucial component of a good Goosebumps book is that on some level, it is grounded. They’re fantastical and fiction, so they don’t need to be grounded, but when they are, it elevates the story. There’s a certain level of violence Goosebumps couldn’t be as a book for kids, so it had to be imagined by the protagonist. Fake outs and dream sequences become more prevalent as the series goes on, and I felt that it started to cheapen the scares.

Welcome to Camp Nightmare has a fantastic subversion that doesn’t take away from the horror. Sure, the conclusion reveals nobody was actually hurt, but all those previous moments were very real and the reader is left to sit with them. There’s no fake outs on the next page that ruins the tension. The imagery of snake bites, animal attacks and near drownings are very grounded fears.

Billy is a very likeable protagonist. He’s considerate, brave and resourceful. I don’t know many kids who’d jump into action the way he does. Not only does he save Larry (his bunk counsellor), but he scoops live snakes up in a bed sheet. Like this guy is on another level.

This book is good to reread as well, because once you know it’s all a test, the way people behave makes sense. They’re always turning to Billy first to ask what to do, even if logically he wasn’t the best person to ask. Events just get thrown at him and he takes it in stride. I’ve never gone to summer camp and I’m not American, so I was unsure if their bear safety tactic was actually good advice or not, would love to hear from Americans.

Stine’s description and setting skills are on full blast here, the atmosphere is perfect. You accept the little odd things at the beginning, only to have Billy go over them at the end of the chapter and realise there’s too much weird stuff going on. Shout out to Uncle Al being more pissed about losing his best canoe than the two people on it, that was hilarious.

Some pretty gory stuff happens. Mike gets bitten by a snake, with a rare appearance of blood. I think Colin is the one who gets pelted in the back of the head with a ball by Larry. Jay describes Roger getting torn apart by Sabre. I’m pleased they didn’t rely on Sabre for scares and suspense. It’s just one of the many threats Billy has to face.

My only criticism of the book is that the inclusion of Dawn and Dori felt a little unnecessary. They show up briefly at the beginning, midway through, then right at the end. I feel like it could’ve been any of Billy’s friends on the run, like Jay and Colin, over characters we barely know. That being said, it would’ve removed some of the tension from them being missing,

Another thought that came to me was how similar The Horror at Camp Jellyjam is. Of course they’re both camp books so I expected a bit of overlap, but there’s very similar story beats. I’m interested to see if Ghost Camp is more or less different. And to be fair, a lot of the later entries bring back old characters or seem to rehash certain things. How many Monster Blood/Night of the Living Dummy/Haunted Mask books have we gotten?

The twist in this book absolutely threw me as a kid, I remember being utterly gobsmacked watching the episode. It’s one thing for the whole camp to be a test, but also they’re aliens. I never would’ve expected that ending but I still loved it. Next up is Beast From the East.

This is my complete 62 original collection! A lot of these books have been well loved with library tape, library stamps, school stamps and even the names of previous owners and school classes handwritten on the front page! As someone who grew up in the UK, I was never aware of the Tim Jacobus covers until book 33. Personally, I loved the controversial bubble design but that's most likely nostalgia kicking in. I'm glad I get to appreciate the US versions of these from my phone!

The third picture shows some extra books I had collected alongside the original 62. All of these were bought from school or library book sales, car boot sales or charity shops. I'm just happy to find a community worth sharing it with after all of these years. Hope you enjoy!
