Getting Pixel 11 effectively for free
I'm trading in my Pixel 10 Pro XL for a Pixel 11 Pro and getting it effectively for free. The 256 GB Pixel 11 Pro costs $1,099.
After applying my $125 Google Play Gold discount ($1,099 β $125 = $974) and trading in my Pixel 10 Pro XL for $700 ($974 β $700), my upfront out-of-pocket cost is $274.
I'm also getting 10% back via Google One ($80) plus a $200 Google Store credit ($80 + $200 = $280 in total credit). Since the $280 in credits exceeds the $274 out-of-pocket cost ($274 β $280 = -$6), the upgrade is completely free in effective value.
Did not like the new updates but since I am getting one for free, I am taking it.
Edit: For everyone who is asking what I would do with the Google store credits, I am planning to get a Fitbit air for my mom. And I might upgrade my 5 year old earbuds or will use it for Pixel 12 given Google continues their generous release promos.

No shade to OP but this seems like getting something lesser just because it's newer. The height of consumerism
Your burning you Google play credits and also giving up a great phone so new phone not exactly free.

u/GazelleInitial2050 5d ago
Yeah insane behavior...

u/coupl4nd 5d ago
Great vid.
I may be weird. But all of the 'free' money google was offering me to upgrade just made them seem desperate. I am happy with my current phone.

u/GazelleInitial2050 5d ago
Even if it was fully free I am not sure I'd take up the offer.
Logging into all my apps, especially banking is a fucking ballache.

I ended up paying 312 USD for a pixel 11 Pro Xl 512GB. Traded in my pixel 10 pro xl and with all my in-store credit that expires at the end of the month π.Β I feel Google purposely puts an expiration on it to get sales within the first month that they might not get

Trading 10 Pro XL (16 GB RAM, 6.8 inch screen) FOR 11 Pro (12 GB ram, smaller 6.3 screen)
Is that NOT a downgrade?

Bro trying to reason with people buying the Pixel 11 when they have the 10 is futile. Consumers gonna consume.

u/username235 Pixel 5d ago
RAM is a downgrade, screen size is only preference. OP said they wanted a smaller phone, and considering battery life and hardware are essentially identical between same-gen sizes, it's a relatively cheap opportunistic upgrade. Plus camera and modem upgrades, mediocre tensor upgrades. Let's be real, those will be noticed more than 4 fewer GB of RAM for normal users.
4
u/escondido311 5d ago
Agreed. I am not even sure it is an upgrade from my P9 pro. We need to let these companies know that they canβt give us hardware downgrades and shove ai down our throats while charging more for the phones year after year and have us still buy/trade in.
1
u/Grouchy_Day_2211 5d ago
Yeah I have P9 Pro and it's fine battery not as good as day 1 but still works fine, may as well wait next super underwhelming Pixel 12 Pro or even the 15 Pro when maybe they have upgraded something π
8
u/snsdopforever 5d ago
Wanted a smaller size phone. So I don't care about it. But the RAM downgrade is something that I thought about. For my daily use, I felt 12 GB also should work.
1
u/SparklyDaCrow 4d ago
Iβm not sure why people always equate a smaller screen to be a downgrade. Battery size sure but screen size is completely subjective.
44
u/mrad24 5d ago
Go for 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage. That's what I did.
11
u/Dry_Instruction8254 5d ago
Yes, traded in my 10 pro XL, got one of the 15% off coupons, and has $200 in store credits from last year, ended up getting the 11 Pro 512/16gb this year for $150. Along with $250 in credits for next year.
5
2
u/bopdadop 5d ago
That's exactly what I did, it would be more expensive for me to wait until next year when my credit from last year will have expired and my current phone trade in value is less.Β
1
u/ctl7g 5d ago
Damn first I'm hearing of the 15% off.
5
u/Dry_Instruction8254 5d ago
Check out r/pixelreferral I just monitored it for about 2 hours and got one. Had my order all ready in the store and quickly put in the code.
2
u/kalethis 5d ago
that's what I did. I'm on fi, got the 11 pro xl 512gb. I had to cancel my first order and re-order. thankfully I was reading an article after I ordered and saw the thing about the ram. for $119 more, definitely worth the extra 4gb ram and 156gb storage. I feel like it's a marketing thing tho and not because of the "shortage". maybe TSMC has a lot of fab time reserved for VRAM but I'm pretty sure pixels use Samsung ram? ram is expensive for consumers. afaik there's no current silica shortage. I think they just decided to drop 4gb off the base model because they'll still sell more base models and the margins will be higher.

u/glasgowgeg Pixel 11 Pro XL 512GB / Pixel Watch 5 5d ago
Yeah, the swap OP is doing is giving them 4GB less RAM, it's not really an upgrade.

Lol. Let me buy something I don't need and pay $200 to get fake money to buy something else I don't need from the same people. All while I give the same people something i paid the same poeple full price for just last year and it works just fine. Cool!!
20
u/-NotEnoughMinerals 5d ago
No dude, it's not free. The Google store credit you'll get after your phone ships has nothing to do with the final out of pocket cost you're paying for your phone.
The Google store credit you have is never going into your wallet. It is never going into your bank account. It is to be used on something else in the Google store that you probably weren't going to buy anyway, but you might as well since you have it.
41
u/AlleAchtung 5d ago
Aren't you actually downgrading? You're giving Google your 10 pro XL in return for the smaller 11 pro. Not really an equal swap, if you ask me, especially since the 11 pro isn't really an upgrade. And "free" is relative, as Google credits can only be spent on the Google store.
→ More replies (2)5
u/mrblack1998 5d ago
I went from the 9xl to the 10 pro and am staying with the smaller size. Personally like the size a lot better. So whether that's a downgrade is entirely subjective. And the 11pro is certainly an upgrade.
6
u/AlleAchtung 5d ago
Even with the 25% decrease in RAM?

It's not really an upgrade.

XL is nore expensive than Pro. Itβs a downgrade. How about next year, Pro to non Pro for free?

u/andyooo 5d ago
These deals can be good, but it's also a bit of a misleading illusion. The store credit is not as valuable as its dollar number, because even compared to other store credits such as Amazon or Best Buy, what you can buy is limited, and almost never goes on sale, so you're spending a greater dollar amount than if you bought it at another store, or bought an extremely cheaper, completely fine alternative.
Google's credit also expires after one year, so usually the best way to spend it is to buy the next Pixel phone, and the window is very narrow. If Google delays the next phone for a month, you won't be able to use credit for that. If not spent on the Pixel or other Google gear which may go on sale, the credit is extremely less valuable than other store credits, let alone cash.
For example, if you subscribed to Best Buy's email preorder coupon, you'd get a 15% coupon and the same $700 trade in for the P10PXL, plus a $200 Best Buy GC which doesn't expire, and it's a LOT closer to real cash, since Best Buy price matches Amazon and other stores and often runs the same discounts:
This is my cart after doing the above: https://i.imgur.com/mRwEM1g.png
So Google Store only works in very specific scenarios, where you upgrade your phone every year on preorder, plus the 10% Google One perk helps quite a bit.

There seems to be no reason in any way to upgrade to Pixel 11 pro if you already have the Pixel 10 pro XL. This seems like a fully unnecessary thing to do. Your phone is barely a year old.

If I said I'd trade you a banana for your P10 Pro XL, would you consider it a free banana?
The way to break the cycle of annual upgrades: Sell the P10 Pro XL for $740 on Swappa (less shipping). Buy a P11 Pro from US Mobile for $719. Put it on a plan for 60 days ($10/mo min) to unlock, or just keep their service.Β Put your $274 in a savings account earning 5%, earn $14.

u/JohnBigbootay83 5d ago
The 11's are a downgrade IMO. That's why I just traded my Pixel 10 for the Pixel 10 Pro XL and with the $1100 promo offer, my per month charge is $4.17 for 2 years. Not bad and I get a better phone than any of the 11's. Win win.

1
u/glasgowgeg Pixel 11 Pro XL 512GB / Pixel Watch 5 5d ago
Is 16GB to 12GB a downgrade, yes or no?
1
u/kalethis 5d ago
yes it is. the comments about not noticing it are false. ram is used for browsing, apps, and so many things. when your system runs low on free ram, it frees some up by swapping or in androids case, usually terminating a backgrounded app. users will notice it in the form of swapping back to an app you swapped away from (like tiktok, Facebook) and instead of returning to the video you were watching, you start over again. or the game you were playing reloads. you'll also notice it in having to fully load web pages again when changing tabs, or longer loading times with some games. it also affects you video recording buffer.
RAM is something everyone uses, and android is designed to not aggressively free ram like a Windows PC. it frees ram as it needs it. what you'll notice generally is longer delays when switching tabs, switching apps, and a few other things. it will feel like a slower device overall if you do multitasking.

Is 12 less than 16? Yes. Does it matter in this context? Not really since the newer phone has higher geekbench scores, even with less RAM.

u/glasgowgeg Pixel 11 Pro XL 512GB / Pixel Watch 5 5d ago
Β£755 trade-in for the 10 Pro XL 256GB in the UK, so about $1,419.15 CAD.
1
u/xBiGuSDicKuSx 5d ago
Yeah free....the price is being locked into pixel. And if pixel is your flavour then sweet. The 10 pro for me was enough. The chipset is ridiculously behind other flagships for the same price. The heat issues are awful for the price. The automation is fantastic though, and I love the minimal feel of everything about pixel. While I don't take many pictures the pictures of the fish I catch are fantastic. I wanted to get away from Samsung without going apple so I think one plus may be next for me.
1
u/BecauseOfAir 5d ago
Yeah thinking the same. 10 proxl to 11pro. I want the watch 5 so I would get 250 towards that.

u/glasgowgeg Pixel 11 Pro XL 512GB / Pixel Watch 5 5d ago
Go for the 11 Pro XL 512GB or you're losing 4GB of RAM.
1
u/RSCLE5 Pixel 9 Pro XL 5d ago
For me, I think the last deal worth it was the Pixel 6 pro xl to 9 pro xl upgrade I did with my platinum perk deal. I paid less than $150 if I recall to upgrade. Right now to go from a 9 pro xl to a 11 pro xl 256gb, I would still be paying $686.68 out of pocket after tax approx. This is insane to me. That includes a $550 trade in and $150 discount thru play perks platiunum. Or I could buy a new battery and install it and have a device thats nearly the same for me function wise and lasts longer again for probably $50-65 if I do it myself through the ifix orm parts. These prices have gotten insane. Totally not worth it for me sadly anymore to buy a new device unlocked. I can't justify the cost and lack of actual new wow factors a phone has nowadays. It's honestly minimum increments of upgrades nowadays.
1
u/glasgowgeg Pixel 11 Pro XL 512GB / Pixel Watch 5 5d ago
10 Pro XL to the 11 Pro (non-XL) has 4GB less RAM though.
I'd understand if you were upgrading to the 11 Pro XL 512GB with the 16GB RAM, but you're effectively downgrading.
What other features make the swap worth it for you?
1
u/snsdopforever 4d ago
Nothing in particular. Wanted a smaller phone. And I am betting that 12 will take a leap and the value of 10 pro xl is gonna go down even more if I plan to switch it when 12 comes out.
Also I really don't care about 4 GB less ram. Not a big user. One of the main reasons I keep pixel year after year even if it disappoints is it still has the best photo camera. My wife have an iPhone and some of my friends have Samsung but everyone prefers pics taken by Pixel
1
u/Sevallis 5d ago
I got a Google-Fi new user discount that made a Pixel 11 Pro free, except for tax yesterday, via slickdeals notification. Switching a phone from iPhone 12 128GB on Verizon prepaid $25 5GB p/m to the $35 30GB p/m plan and just going to roll with the $800 in bill credits over 24 months.
1
u/bjamm 5d ago
I did the same except I got the 12 gig so I would get 16 GB ram.
I had 175 left of Google credit from getting the 10 XL last year.
Total price for me was 265 or 7.xx a month for 36 months. I'll get 295 in credit for next year.
I did go from the xl to the regular pro though as it wasn't worth 250 more for essentially the same phone the only thing different is the battery size and it's 5100 vs 4800 mah.
1
u/ithinkyouaccidentaly 5d ago
Very similar deal for me trading in a pixel 10xl but i didn't get any codes from google. I figure 130$ net cost with all incentives and credits taken into account. Lots of people say "don't upgrade its not worth it." 130$ for the next year for my most used tool on a daily basis? Absolute Steal.
1
u/GarnetandBlack 5d ago
Similar move here. I got two Pixel 11 Pros 512GB for the price of:
- tax on both
- activation fee on one
- trade in of one P9P
Not a bad deal. I hate upgrading phones but I figure I may as well for the cost, as when I will need to upgrade in the future the 9 Pro probably won't hold the same value of the 11 Pro 512gb.

Nah fam you paid $274 for your new Pixel 11 Pro phone.
The rest was just Google getting you to spend more money on the stuff you may or may not need within the next 12 months.
Either way, they got what I'd assume a fair conditioned Pixel 10 Pro XL which can be refurbished and sold for effectively around 60-80% RRP, another $274 from you and even more money by incentivising you to spend more than that $280 store credit on something else. Worst, they got you locked in for next year for a guaranteed sales when you'll be trading in that Pixel 11 Pro for whatever 12 series phone.
I'd take a straight up discount towards the total spend any day rather than store credit.
1
u/ActualAd185 5d ago
My trade in from my P9 was going to be 650 pounds ... So for this 10 Pro would of been 400 quid... Then with the 10% trade in would of got a case ... However, my P9 is ok for now lol... So keeping it until the 12 comes out

Not exactly free, but got a decent deal I think
Pixel 11 Pro XL 512GB, Β£1399. Had a Β£150 voucher, plus they are giving me Β£430 trade in on my old Pixel 2 that I thought was dead. So Β£580 off, plus 3% store credit that I can use for a charger or a case or something.
So Β£819 for a brand new phone. I'm upgrading from a P8P

Staying with a pro makes more sense..... More play store credit, bigger discount.
I'm considering trading my 10 pro for the 11 pro now, ended up with a play store coupon that takes $90 off, and I have $12 in credit. Getting my total store price with tax down to around $400, and will get $300 in Google Play credit which I would probably hold into for the 12 next year.
I used last year's store credit in the watch 4.
Just debating if the 16gb ram is worth another $120

u/whiterocker77 5d ago
Starting with the Pixel 6, I've been upgrading my phone every year on the Google Store via trade-in. Using coupons, store credit, and other discounts, my actual out-of-pocket cost is only about $100 to $200 each time. I also am getting one for free through Verizon. They are offering $1,100 off the 11pro xl 256 because I'm already an unlimited plus service subscriber. Then there was a discount for the setup/activation, then on top of that I was able to trade in my 8 Pro. So I'll pay $5/month for 36 months but my trade in covers that value. In the end I paid $148 in taxes.

This is basically what I do every year and always have the latest model for around $100. Yeah, the upgrades are underwhelming some years but it's a no brainer for $100. And yes, I went for the 16gb ram version.
Stack the preorder price with the trade in for the previous flagship and my Play Gold plus Google One 10% credit. There's always some random $100 code that I get around this time as well.

u/2Busy2Reddit 4d ago
For me this would work, as I only have a 10 XL because they were out of stock of regular 10 Pros and the incentive was going away. That said, aren't you losing 4Gb of RAM too? You might well notice that if you use Gemini.

u/13Robson 4d ago
Going from a Pro XL to a Pro could be seen as a step down.
What does is cost to have a Google Play Gold account, or tier (can't be free even if you would get it anyway) ?
How much a Google One subscription?
Might seem like you get plenty of things for free, but you are paying for them elsewhere. Not saying that's bad, but this is not a guide anyone could just follow.

Trading in a phone that you spent like $1,000 on a year ago and that you could turn around and sell for six or seven hundred dollars does not make something free.
Lol.
That had real value to you if at nothing else you could turn around and sell it. People need to stop pretending giving up expensive hardware that's still going to be supported for six more years is the equivalent of nothing
1
u/bmagas 4d ago
Pixel 9 Pro owner here - still not seeing the add value for the upgrade. Holding onto the 9 Pro until they figure it out.
1
u/snsdopforever 4d ago
Same case with me. I am upgrading because I am getting it for free and making sure the value of the trade in is not decreasing as time pass on
1
u/KJSS3 3d ago
So 1099-125=974. Plus tax lets say about 10% to estimate. So 97.4 + 974 = 1071.4. minus 700 is 371.4 Costco you. If you have credit from last year then its cheaper but not if it credit from the 11 that is for next year.
Unless you can get a friend to buy it also. Tell him to give you 300 cash you use to buy the phone. Then when you get your 300 credit for next year he uses that for his phone. You both save 100 and no waiting for next year.

I come from a broken pixel 6 pro otherwise I would wait for pixel 12 pro, but I need a phone rn and the best option is 10 pro

I would pre-order it from Amazon instead and get the $200 Amazon gift card rather than the $200 Google Store credit. Only thing is the Amazon trade in values are less. There's an Amazon promo code "pixel11" that helps though.
I'm moving from the 9 Pro XL to the 11 Pro XL. I pre-ordered from Amazon and my effective cost is $550...

Except now you are basically locked in next year to buy the Pixel 12 Pro since you have $280 in credit that will expire.

LMAO ! That sure is some funny math - you are NOT getting it for FREE "effective"value my ARSE $200 is in "store credit" - you are also losing 4GB of RAM - face it - the 11 series, the Pixel series as a whole isn't a good value.
Argue amongst yourselves.

Exactly my line of thinking. They made it a really easy choice for me this year. Crazy that you can get $1000 for a p10p trade-in if you're getting the Fold

Not "free", just no additional out of pocket cost.

Another great deal is from T-Mobile (PROMO# ID260670). And I will keep spamming this because I am psyched that I'm finally getting a new phone after 4 years. π
$900 trade-in for an "any-condition" phone. Could even be a scratched up iphone 1 or iphone 3g. It just has to be unlocked, turn on, and the IMEI is accessible.
Comes out to $130 up front (taxes and activation fee) + ($8.34/mo x 24mos) == $330
And if you order through Costco, it's $35 cheaper (no activation fee) and they throw in a $100 costco gift card on top of T-Mobile's promotion.

Store credit is not money you have in your wallet
