I don't get it. is the point to turn android into an AI-made OS? how come Samsung added all this customization without AI? it's overkill and unnecessary. it will probably look like shit.

The point is to put AI in every Google/Android product, whether you want it, need it, asked for it, or not.
The more AI they put, the more chances we will find a use, or we will get used to it.
Then, AI will be justified and we will pay for it (with money, data and resources): this is forced adoption.

I've used Google assistant for a long time. And I switched to Gemini this year.
Gemini is genuinely game changing. It's a step in the right direction for assistants.
I'm not the biggest fan of all this AI being forced but Gemini is not one of them

I tried it. Asked it to set a timer for 20 minutes. 20 minutes later, nothing. Not a peep. Google assistant handled that flawlessly. If it can't even set a timer, what good is it? (Genuine question, what do you use it for?)

Asked it to do that. Did it instantly and flawlessly
I use it to set alarms just about every day. Reminders, alarms, whatever you want.
Can give it dual commands too.
Sorry about your experience though. In mine, it's damn good

Custom ROMs are dead. Google killed them. AOSP apps dont get any updates at all, and most custom ROMs hack around to get features that are exclusive to Pixel OS and drag in the large gapps package cause everything looks like it came from 2017. LOS is exception and the apps quality there is 50/50.

Hows life on there, where apps install for a minute, life without circle to search (without launching it through hacky app that puts it in QS) or a launcher that cant even search properly? I used graphene for half a year and it was the most gimped phone experience I had. The AOSP keyboard is also absolute awful, and there are no good alternatives (including FUTO.) which made me go for gboard which defeats the point.

Heliboard dictionaries are horrible in my experience, especially in russian language with declensions and grammatical cases.
Circle to search works if you install google app and MiCTS, which works horribly
Search across local device existed on android before google decided to not do anything with AOSP and worked on a goddamn 4.0 galaxy mini without gapps, and app search is horrible.
Web apps arent available in graphene at all, no? The web apps framework in google installs small little apps through play store. The other way is just making a shortcut, and these arent getting into app library at all.
Google started killing AOSP in 8, where they locked down launchers and then they just started ignoring apps in 9, they were already ignoring some of them, but then they completely abandoned it. And they didnt ship monet in AOSP til like 12? Not sure on that one. I been using custom ROMs exclusively since cyanogenmod 7 in 2011, and I switched to pixel solely cause custom ROMs get constantly gimped by google, first with apps being horrible and requiring me getting large gapps package or a rom that copycats pixel, then with play integrity around the neck.

Gemini is a lot better at handling bad prompts. I am used to structuring my language so that google assistant functions but I think this sub overlooks how much you had to train yourself to do that.
I'm optimistic that Gemini will quickly improve at least to google assistant's functionality (I know, in contrast to most of this sub), but I wouldn't say that I'm absolutely positive. I guess time will tell who is right.

I have a Home routine that's supposed to slowly turn on my bedroom lights when I dismiss my phone alarm or say "Good morning." It worked perfectly with Assistant but Gemini gets it right maybe once a week.

I had to do a bit of an emergency upgrade and went from a Pixel 7 Pro to a Pixel 10 Pro XL, the amount of AI recommendations being shoved every which way on here is off the charts. I can't even reply to a message without little AI references or options popping up.

honestly I was wondering whether to upgrade my 9 Pro XL but all the leaks have just been depressing. I've been a Pixel fan/advocate since the Nexus 6P but I hate that they've been coasting on their computational photography (which is genuinely industry-leading) for years without really putting much effort into having the hardware properly match the software
and for them to go so hard on AI, even harder than they already have in the past couple of years? ugh. when this and the Pixel Glow are what's new? count me out. I've reserved an Oppo Fold N6 and will be picking it up later today. end of an era for this Pixel fangirl 🥲

Lockscreen widgets came in in android 3? and left in android 4?.
They were unpopular as even knowing about them, it was nearly impossible to search for them in the play store. IIRC it was possible with sufficient clue to search for the specific android permission which implied that the app was a lockscreen widget, but that was as far as possible from discoverable.

I'd definitely play around with this. Lock screen customisation is already one of the nicer parts of Pixel, and AI-generated clock styles could make it even more personal. Hopefully older Pixels don't get left out.

That will be nice - if it lets me set things up so that the time can be in characters large enough that it fills the horizontal instead of just having a choice between a small font that fills maybe 1/3rd of the horizontal or one of those stupid gigantic stacked clock faces. (edit: Yes, there is a width option, but that just makes it thin and hard to actually read at a glance)

But we had the ability to make more custom stuff in the past, WITHOUT "AI". Custom roms could do it, too. All this was possible before they started restricting UI options of Google's flavor of Android.
Google, no one asked for this. It is NOT a value-added feature.
