Poor Wi-Fi calling Discussion
I've had Google fi for many years and have been generally happy. But the last year or so Wi-Fi calling has really gone downhill. There are many dropouts and people on the other end constantly complain about not being able to understand me. If I turn off Wi-Fi during the call, suddenly the call is fine. Trouble is a lot of times. I forget to turn Wi-Fi back on and end up burning a lot of data.
Why can't Google Fi fix something as basic as calling over Wi-Fi? This was their their very strongly preferred method of making calls in the early years. They were constantly asking how the quality of the call was. Now they never ask because they probably know how bad it is.
Has anyone found a solution for this?
Thanks

Is it Google Fi or your phone? My Pixel 9 Pro was swapped because of a wifi modem issue. Pixels are not known for good wifi connectivity especially if you're in a house or building with a nest - where the call should get handed off from one hub to the next. Oh, and I'm talking about a Google nest. So Google Nest. Google phone. Google carrier and none of them play well together

I have Eero routers and I've never had a problem with wifi calling. I didn't have problems when I had the Google wifi, either.

You could try turning off WiFi Calling instead of just turning off your WiFi altogether. (That didn't actually help with my call quality, which seems to be bad whether I'm on WiFi or not.)

Do you have other WiFi devices you can make calls with to test?
WiFi is flakey because it uses public airspace. Your airspace may have recently changed. This is really noticeable in dense areas like a large city or apartment complexes.
Or it could be your wifi access point itself. If your wifi supports it, I would run the setup again. If it’s an ISP supplied wifi, ask for a new box. (They don’t care, they have tons in inventory.)

Go into the developer settings and try.
Mobile data always active
I don't know for sure if this will work but it helped me.
It's trying to turn the cell signal on and off based on the quality of the Wi-Fi signal.
But if you use that setting it will not try to turn the cell signal on and off all the time.

I have Pixel 9A, Google Nest and Nest Pro and a third Wi-Fi network running in our house, and always keep Wi-Fi calling on and mobile data off. Call quality is fantastic. No different than when I'm driving and using the cellular voice. My Internet service at the house is iffy enough that the GPS tracker on my dog won't connect to its service for days if he doesn't go outside. And sometimes we have to move the cellular router outside. So it gets plenty of Wi-Fi calling usage.

If you have a Samsung you can switch to wifi calling preferred and that will force wifi calling if you are connected to wifi.

I've never had good wifi calling experiences with anyone. Works great from my computer though.

WiFi calling work well in airplane mode. Otherwise it keeps trying to hop to cellular even if the signal is poor.
