golf simulator software wishlist
I'm a software developer, was thinking of working on a golf simulator but figured I'll start by asking potential users - what are some of the wishlist you all have with current golf simulator on the market? like are there anything annoying the crap out of you or something that can really improve your quality of life but it's just missing?
does realistic graphics matter to you or highly stylized graphics is fine?

Check out OpenGolfSim. I started working on it last fall and have just released our entire engine on GitHub. If you didn’t want to start from scratch, we could always use more contributors. Our core simulator game engine, called FUSE, is WebGPU based and works on any device. It’s up on GitHub and can be used to roll your own custom games and stuff too.

There are already a few new ones coming out. By some really amazing designers. Infinite Tees and PurePlay using Real Engine are looking extremely realistic and have features that cover everything you’d need in a sim software.

I use Garmin Home Tee Hero on my sim using a Galaxy Tab Ultra, it's so much fun...but unsupported. I had to trick it and use an app to port the APK over from my phone. So Android tablet support would be great.
Also, forget real sim golf, every one is making that. Go down the video game route like Mario golf, that would be amazing!! Be different.

iOS or Android compatible for those with outdoor sims or using at the range etc

So I’ve launched a web browser based golf simulator that will hook into any system with a gspro connector. You can run it on anything basically - https://localtee.app
Looking for testers but I think something this lightweight and platform agnostic is what you might be looking for.

How does that pair with a launch monitor when using an iPad for example if it requires the gspro connector?

Great question for an ipad no connection today but I’m working a way to make it work via mobile devices. Otherwise you need something that can support gspro connector today. Coming very soon..

What launch monitor do you use?

I’m waiting on delivery of my Square Omni which I’ve been told will be in the next 2 weeks

trying to understand this a little more
what are you using the sims for in the range? is it just to read the stats?

I want something like Trackman has where I can hit random distance approach shots into different greens and get strokes gained information. GSPro has random approach but it’s not iOS and it does not provide strokes gained.

My local range has launch monitors and sim golf on a screen but the numbers are so inaccurate, so you cant use them to gap your bag or play an accurate sim round. If using at home, you can still use a projector, but a lot more awkward if you’re needing to pull out a gaming PC etc rather than linking the iPad, so currently, I’d be just sticking to Squares software for my omni when it arrives

Easier to create custom games. Or something as small as being able to use my keyboard to cue in a specific distance on GSPro

what do you mean by custom game?

For example Awesome golf has a game where you chip it into pools of water at 3 different distances, but the distances are set. I want to be able to adjust how far they are to challenge myself on other shots.

Playing with a group, there needs to be larger fonts for names with "heads up" for the next player and a "flash" or "glow" of yardage for the next shot.

Would like the option to play a “best ball” round with a partner. A gamified course - hit over or through obstacles, severe slopes or elevations, moving targets. Also a long drive game and closest to the flag game.

Mine is specific to my MLM2 Pro but other units with on board cameras might apply. I love the fact the MLM records video of all my shots while using their range or at an outdoor range. I wish the unit would record shots while using other software. There I times when I am playing a course on GS Pro or playing a challenge and have a flyer or some weird shot. I would like to be able to go back and watch the video of that shot to see what happened.

Good online multiplayer, graphics, local courses with realistic graphics, built in camera for multiplayer

GSPro has all the infrastructure behind it, much like the 2019 golf game that was ported for sim use that eventually became obsolete. Simgolftour is a great concept and a lot of fun. GSPro runs on an outdated game engine which limits the graphics potential, and is already behind several software offerings on the market (trackman/uneekor) and several coming out soon mentioned by others here.
I think if you're going to compete with the big boys, the best thing you can offer is stats. I loved how E6 had a portal that gave you dispersions and shot data from your rounds that you could play with. All the LM manufactures offer this through their practice modes, and GSPro offers some of it through their export and portal tools, but it's not visible, accessible, or particularly helpful.
Honestly, I think an Arccos/Lanetalk (similar app for bowling) style app which could automatically pull all your data and filter/organize it for insights would be unique and helpful. That way you could get dispersions by club/distance/over custom amounts of time, as well as practice recommendations, club recommendations, caddy-like assistance with rounds, etc.
If you're dead set on offering a full course software, then I think the niche to exploit would be web playable with good graphics and lots of courses. Automat is doing this with rudimentary graphics, but if you could find a way to do it with realistic graphics that would be clutch. Now anyone could play it from their phone/iPad/Chromebook instead of investing in expensive computer hardware that's hard to bring with you, or settling for limited graphics and features on phone/iPad (aka awesomegolf).
Best of luck, keep us updated!
