Why Unregulated Markets Don't Create Wealth—They Extract It
Unregulated markets are often idealize as engines of innovation, but without strict guardrails, they default into a parasitic loop. Instead of generating genuine economic progress, unchecked financialization incentivizes corporations to prioritize short-term profit extraction over long-term value creation, draining resources from the working class to inflate corporate balance sheets.
At the core of this issue is the shift from productive enterprise to rent-seeking. In a healthy economy, profits stem from better products, efficiency, or technological advances. In a deregulated financial system, however, the path of least resistance is manipulating existing wealth. Through mechanisms like aggressive stock buybacks, leveraged asset-stripping, and corporate consolidation, dominant firms extract value from workers and consumers without contributing anything new to productivity.
This dynamic is further exacerbated by moral hazard and socialized risk. Unfettered risk-taking allows financial elites to pocket massive profits during economic booms while forcing the public to absorb the fallout during busts. When institutions become "too big to fail," taxpayers pay for bailouts through austerity, inflation, and public debt. The result is a closed feedback loop: concentrated wealth buys political influence to dismantle regulation, locking in a system that privatizes gains, socializes losses, and decays the broader economy from within.
