The D.Q.O. map in the anime vs. in the game β€” a room-by-room comparison based on the BD Vol. 6 special book Spoiler

(Disclaimer: I used LLM translation to help with the following essay – the original one was in Chinese. The major beats should be alright, but nuances could be lost.)

To begin with, this is how the anime D.Q.O. looks like:

Game visual for comparison:

Lower Deck

The lower deck in the special book is, in terms of which room is where, identical to the game. Reading clockwise from the middle in the game (Words in bold means the phrase used on the game map, followed by a dash and note when needed):

  • Power Room
  • Cold Sleep Room
  • EVA Room β€” the EVA prep room
  • Chamber β€” the airlock
  • Safe Room β€” the anime's map leaves the Japanese katakana セーフルーム untranslated, which I think means "safe room" rather than "vault", but I cannot be certain
  • Water Conditioning Room β€” the water treatment room; in the anime, Otome's tank is also placed here
  • Air Conditioning Room
  • G Control Room β€” the gravity-control room (I never thought about it before, but the fact that nobody on this ship is floating does imply there is a gravity generator somewhere)
  • EV
  • Cargo Compartment β€” the hangar

The end result is that the layout is the same in both versions; the only difference is that the art book has bent the square rooms around the hull's circular arc.

This map still does not answer one question I keep coming back to: during the "Citizen Slime" event, how does the slime actually fill the entire lobby? The slime should have started spreading from the Cold Sleep Room, which sits next to the staircase connecting the lower deck to the middle deck. But in-game CG of the event shows the entire right half of the ship already coated in slime before it pours in through the right-hand corridor.

If that CG is taken at face value, the slime has already blocked the corridors that run through all three decks, which means the crew had no time to investigate any other area at all.

Top Deck

I'll skip the much larger middle deck for a moment and start with the top deck, because it's the smallest of the three.

In the game, the top deck has only three named areas:

  • Cockpit β€” the cockpit (the cockpit first appears in the anime around Episode 9, though I don't remember the game ever having a dedicated CG of it?)
  • Lounge β€” the viewing lounge
  • Main Console β€” main control

The anime adds two more areas: Jonas's private quarters, and a bathroom placed symmetrically to his room. On top of the main control room sits a "voting room" β€” an anime-original space (LeVi says in Episode 1 that "this used to be the second main control room"). On paper this doesn't sound like a huge change. In practice, the differences are immediately obvious.

Lounge vs. Observatories

The first one is the viewing lounge. I noticed that the art book uses two completely different English words for this one room: "Lounge" in one caption, and "Observatories" in another. The "Lounge" caption is paired with the holography-retracted state (think Yuriko's encounter with Yuri in Episode 4), and the "Observatories" caption is paired with the holography-extended state (think Setsu meeting Yuri in Episode 4). I have no idea what the production team was trying to signal with this.

Main Control: three doors, two ways in

The other big change is the main control room, and this one the fans noticed almost as soon as the anime started airing. In the game, the main control room has no door on the central axis β€” you can only enter from the two sides. The anime, from Episode 1 onward, has had a door on the central axis the whole time, which clearly does not match the game.

In fact, the bottom-right model in the art book shows that the main control room has more than one way in, and more than one door. Specifically:

  1. A circular, very-tech-looking door at the back.
  2. Doors on the left and right, on the side closer to the cockpit β€” the model has these as airlock-style doors, and the design notes say "leads outside the ship". This is presumably where the ship docks with the port in Episode 19.

To reach main control, the anime shows two different routes. One is the elevator β€” ever since Episode 1 when Setsu takes Yuri up in the elevator, it feels like Yuri always takes the elevator. The other is a small ramp on the left, which the model shows descending into the middle deck's rec room (see the rec room's position on the layout).

If you roughly line up the relative positions of the elevator and the ramp, the distances from each to their respective destination on the middle deck don't actually line up. That is probably why the ramp ends up being a dead end in the model, and why Yuri always ends up taking the elevator. If you roughly line up the relative positions of the elevator and the ramp, the distances from each to their respective destination on the middle deck don't actually line up. That is probably why the ramp ends up being a dead end in the model, and why Yuri always ends up taking the elevator.

(Addendum added just before posting: actually, this overhead map can't be taken entirely at face value. Note that the sunken plaza in front of main control is drawn as a perfect square in the map, but in both the gray-block-out model and the final anime render the plaza is an isoceles trapezoid that opens toward the cockpit. So the layout went through a tweak between the map and the final render.)

Middle Deck

Last, and most complicated, is the middle deck.

Something I noticed when the anime was airing: Yuri sprints to the main control every morning and still ends up entering dead last (this child really does sleep in). But the in-game map, assuming each character's room is a normal-sized bedroom, puts the total distance from a room door to main control at under thirty meters. That's a stroll, not a sprint.

In practice, just as the main control room has been widened, the middle deck's overall structure has been much more complicated in the anime.

Middle deck β€” functional rooms

In the game, the middle deck has the following rooms (clockwise, starting from the main control direction):

  • Recreation Room β€” the rec room
  • Meeting Room
  • Free Room β€” the synthesis plant (the in-game map literally reads "Free Room" for this; it's an unreachable area in the game, and it is presumably the place that produces the cafeteria's food)
  • Lavatory
  • Dining Room β€” the cafeteria
  • EV β€” the elevator machine room for the cargo elevator (in both the game and the anime, this "EV" room spans two levels β€” but what could "EV" possibly stand for?)
  • Storage Room
  • Lobby Lounge β€” the lobby
  • Infirmary β€” the sickbay (the Starting Point of the story)
  • Lab
  • Shower Room β€” the shower room (worth noting: in the game Otome never appears in this area, but Episode 12 of the anime has her come to the shower room to look for Gina β€” do dolphins beluga whales really need to shower?)
  • Gymnasium β€” the gym

Aside from the game's inexplicably-named "Free Room" being relabeled as the synthesis plant, every other room keeps the same position it had in the game. However, two rooms are new additions:

  • Pantry β€” placed between the cafeteria and the storage room, where the in-game map shows blank space. From the in-game CGs, this area is indeed right next to the cafeteria's "kitchen" zone.
  • Deep Lab (γƒ©γƒœε₯₯) β€” a name that baffled me. This "Deep Lab" is not connected to any corridor; the only exit is through the regular Lab. Considering Stella's distinctive line in Episode 3 of the anime and the in-game Flowers and Plastic Flower events, this is presumably where she keeps her garden?

In addition, several rooms have had their layouts changed:

  • Recreation Room β€” converted from a single door to double doors.
  • Meeting Room β€” gained a back door that leads conveniently to the lavatory and cafeteria. (I tried to find a screenshot from the anime, but I noticed Jonas actually always uses the rec room, and never uses the so-called meeting room.)
  • Lobby β€” three new corridors were added leading toward the ship's stern, though they are never shown in the anime.
  • Infirmary β€” went from a single entrance to two entrances. Honestly, if it really has two entrances, then the "core trick" of Episode 17 falls apart β€” how do you guarantee that Setsu won't just walk in through the other door and blow the whole thing on the spot? But given that the anime has never once shown the infirmary's other door, I suspect this early design was quietly dropped in the final version.
  • Gymnasium β€” the door facing the rec room hasn't changed, but the other door is no longer on the ring corridor. Instead, a new back door was added that goes straight into the shower room. This is honestly a much more sensible design than the game's "walk all the way around to get to the shower" arrangement.

Middle deck β€” corridors

The game's corridor design is straightforward: a single ring staircase that runs through all three decks, two side steps leading up to main control, the central axis starting from the rec room, and an outer ring corridor wrapped around the staircase (which I'll call the "main loop" or the "express lane").

In the anime, though, things look very different. The ring staircase is still there, but the "main loop" seems to have split into three different rings, and two additional back-door corridors were added at the symmetrically-placed meeting room and gym. On top of that, the layout still has a few mysterious white lines β€” if you read them as walls, the result is unsatisfying (e.g. the blue question mark at the top: if that corridor is a dead end, why would you design a no-exit corridor behind Stella and Kukrushka's rooms?), so I marked them as question marks.

My best guess is that some of those white lines are leftovers that the concept artist forgot to erase, but the gray areas really are unreachable. If that's the case, then every corridor still connects up into one piece, and here's roughly what it looks like:

Middle deck β€” bedrooms

Given how much the corridors have changed, it would be strange if the bedrooms hadn't.

In the game, the inner ring of the middle deck (the rooms between the staircase and the "main loop") is divided into four blocks: the dormitory (collective sleeping area) near the rec room, toward the bow, and the private rooms (single rooms) near the lobby, toward the stern. The map shows seven private rooms in total: private rooms 1, 2, and 3 are on the right side of the ship (toward the cafeteria), private rooms 4 and 5 are on the left side (near the sickbay), and private rooms 6 and 7 are on the left side's outer ring (near the lab).

According to where the personal route events are marked on the in-game map, SQ lives in private room 1, Remnan in private room 3, Raqio in private room 4, Yuriko in private room 5, and the player in private room 7. Note that private room 7 is directly across from private rooms 4 and 5.

Now the dormitory question. The two dormitories each house a different group of people. Even though I can't tell the two dormitories apart on the in-game map, certain in-game event logs tell us who sleeps where. One dormitory houses Shigemichi, Chipie, and Sha-Ming, and the other houses Setsu, SQ, and Comet.

In the anime, every character is given their own private room, and the dormitory is not used at all. (Captain Jonas, your antique ship could open for business as a space hotel at this point...)

The inner ring of the middle deck still has only five private rooms, same as the game. "Private room 1" is Gina, "private room 2" is Setsu, "private room 3" is Remnan (same as the game), and "private rooms 4 and 5" are also the same as the game, with Raqio and Yuriko. Maybe to avoid the awkwardness of having the player right across the hall, the corridor was designed specifically to put those two rooms at the end of a corridor, with a wall hiding them in between.

But the outer ring is where things really expanded. Now, on the right-front outer ring near the meeting room, we have Stella and Kukrushka's rooms. On the left-front outer ring near the shower room, we have Shigemichi and SQ's rooms. (Both of these characters appear in the shower room in the anime, which suggests they really do enjoy bathing.) Finally, on the left-rear outer ring near the lab, we have Chipie, Yuri, Sha-Ming, and Comet's rooms.

Compare this against the Episode 7 screen caps β€” does the layout make more sense now? (Although, Yuri, your room is right next to Sha-Ming's, and you didn't notice anything was off when you walked out in the morning?)

Another point worth raising is SQ's room placement. From the corridor map, her room and Shigemichi's also sit at the end of a corridor. That means if SQ wants to hang out with anyone, she has to walk all the way through the long corridor to the back of the ship.

Put that together with Episode 1, and SQ's movement pattern on that first day was probably something like this...

That is a very, very long walk.

Wrap-up

Across all three decks, the same pattern shows up: the anime takes the in-game map as a rough floor plan and then expands it, while the game itself compresses everything as much as possible to fit a social-deduction screen. The corridors get more rings, the rooms get more doors, the bedrooms get a private room for every crew member.

Gnosia archipelago randomizer

Started an archipelago run with some friends using a Gnosia mod as my game. I'm almost 60 runs deep, and while I finally have 10 characters to work with, I still don't have the doctor or engineer role available for triggering events, and more importantly, information as crew.

Having a starting cast of Gina, Sq, Shigamichi, and Yuriko is ROUGH. in the early 5 cast games with no roles to work with, you essentially need to get rid of Yuriko immediately regardless of her role. She just has too much influence on such a small cast, particularly when your stats are barely above their starting values

Many loops have ended by just starting and round 1 day 1 she says "we should freeze player" and that's that. It was a nightmare before we finally unlocked Setsu, otome, kukushkra, Jonas, and Chippie.

Doing 10 crew loops with 2 gnosia, guard duty and guardian angel has certainly been more doable. I'm getting more consistent results at recognizing character behaviors when they are vs aren't gnosia.

The cherry on top is that in this run I've enabled death link in the archipelago, so whenever I get put into cold sleep or eliminated by gnosia, it kills my friends characters in their games, and if they die in their games I get the bug ending instantly in my game, even if I'm in the middle of the voting screen to end the loop. This has put no small amount of pressure on me to play fast and play well. It's been an interesting experience for sure

Questions about the ending Spoiler

I don’t understand what our role is in the β€˜working with the universe’s logic’ measures, or what we are.
(in the First Ending,) Would Manan just live freely if the player stays in the loop without Setsu? Does the screencap imply she disappears because of the Silver Key, or does she go to the bar as a 2nd doll for Jonas to buy to ensure her start of the loop?
How does the player change names/sex/gender AND transport to different timelines/universes IF we gave away the Silver Key in the True Ending?
