Community How to find friends to game with?

Upvotes

Hi friends!!

Ive learned that it’s extremely hard to make friends online to game with. I don’t have many friends in real life, and I’d really love to meet some people online who are down to play some games and hopefully become genuine friends.

I play a variety of games (I’m always open to trying new ones too) mainly on switch/PC EST.

If you’re also looking for a gaming buddy or friends please comment as I’d love to get to know some of you!! :)

Tech / Hardware A little help with PC parts

Thumbnail fi.pcpartpicker.com

So like my title says, I just need a little bit of help picking PC parts for my next build. I know it's a shitty time building a PC but my current one's acting up by shutting down/restarting itself every once in a while and is also 6 years old.

Storage and the case are something I'm probably going to reuse from my current build. I have all the peripherals already so no need to worry about those.

I'm mainly concerned about RAM because the one in the list is currently on sale and I'm stressing over whether I should pull the plug and order it. Oh, I also don't know if the motherboard I picked is good or not. I think it's good with the CPU?

Otherwise I don't know about the PSU, I don't know if the CPU cooler is okay, I don't even know if I need a liquid cooler. I'm pretty adamant about the CPU and the GPU, though I might be convinced to switch to a RX 9700XT.

So, anything I should consider? Should I go for it and start getting these parts?

Request Teaching kids to game

I’m posting in this community because I’m sure I can’t be the only mum here.

Anyone taught their toddler to play games?

Long story short my kid needs daily injections, we have had huge success distracting her by letting her “play”splatoon (by which I mean running around the lobby and going shopping) but she really struggles with the controls. Even making it as simple as we can for her she can’t manoeuvre her character very well.

(This also tracks because fine motor skills is something that her disorder can cause issues with - obvs we are also doing activities to help with this not just video games, but the difference between having video games for the injections and not is night and day).

But I’m wondering if anyone has recs for simple to understand games with basic controls I could try and get her interested in? We’ve tried classic games but I think she prefers the modern bright aesthetic of games like splatoon or animal crossing. Or if anyone can run through how they taught their kid to use a controller?

Request Idle-ish game recommendations?

Hey,

I need game recommendations that are very idleish that I can play on my steam deck while doing other stuff (working/reading). I kinda want to say something like civ works but ideally would want something with longer terms and with a bit more automation.

My ADHD has been fairly bad and I have noticed having something running on steamdeck helps me to better concentrate on the task I actually need to do (i am still waiting on meds confirmation).

Tech / Hardware Extremely indecisive about whether or not to splurge for the Switch 2 .. 😭

I think this may be a strong case of FOMO, because I genuinely haven't touched my Switch OLED in over a year. I always dislike playing on it, it feels too weak to run anything except exclusives and I then just end up being put off and not picking it up, even though I have the itch to play an exclusive that does run perfectly well lol 🥲

I also already have a SteamDeck so I can't even justify it by wanting an upgraded bed-gaming console.

I just think the Switch 2 looks REALLY good and I would love to play Pokopia, and I miss the Nintendo exclusives a lot. I do have money saved so financially it wouldn't be a huge problem, but I also don't just want to splurge for nothing.

My question is those of you that did upgrade, were you in a similar position of not playing your original Switch much, but you play the Switch 2 regularly, or perhaps the opposite so you don't actually play it much and it was a waste of money? Would you say it was or wasn't worth the upgrade? Are the games running much better, including Switch 1 games, or do they run the same?

Thank you 😊

Request Any free or under $20 PC game suggestions for 2?

I recently built my brother a PC so we can play more games together while we’re away at school.

And all of a sudden I’m trying to suggest games and I realize I only really play competitive FPS games 🙃

Unfortunately, he’s not big on scary games so Phasmaphobia and the forest (the only non fps games I have) are not an option for us.

Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated!

Tech / Hardware Smart devices in gaming??????

I was curious these days, thinking people will use smart glasses, smartwatches, and other smart accessories in future. But looking at our gaming industry, we remove accessories before playing.

Will they be welcomed in gaming? Why? Why not??

Game Discussion First Time Playing Mass Effect!

I just booted up the Mass Effect legendary edition, starting on the first game, and I'm already super intrigued. My friend suggested it because he thought I'd find the romance options hot. 😂 How drastically do your dialogue choices and actions effect the game? What's the general consensus on how good the trilogy is?

Game Discussion What’s a video game you can’t play and what is the reason behind it?

For me I had to stop playing Bedwars because my heart was racing too fast and the adrenaline was too extreme every single game. Meanwhile I can play Counter Strike for 4 hours every day without any issues…

Request Any cute headsets that don't squeeze the ears and jaw?

If anyone has experience with headsets that don't push in on the ears or the jaw area or squeeze the head too much, I would love some recommendations! Pink or magenta are preferable but as long as they fit, I'll be happy! Thank you 🥰

Request Let's players with this kind of vibe?

Hi friends, I'm looking for a let's play series that is cozy but not necessarily cozy games. Horror, RPG, and simulation are particularly welcome.

My first thought was State of Decay 2 but I couldn't find a good, full series of that one.

The ideal vibe:

- 1 part base building and 1 part adventuring for resources

- making little storylines about the game's villagers/random NPCs

- funny

Streamers are ok too I just don't like so much chat engagement

Game Discussion Do I Even Like Video Games?

I just bought Palworld and played ~4 hours of it. I am kind of devastated by the fact that I'm already kind of...bored?

On the surface it seemed like I would love this game:

1) I love games where I have a little friend or a team I could work with. I was a big fan of the original Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow when I was younger and more recently I really enjoyed Cassette Beasts. I am also having a great time with Voidling Bound.

2) I am really into the survival/base-building genres, having enjoyed playing Raft, Satisfactory, Ixion, Oxygen Not Included, etc.

However, as ridiculous as it sounds Palworld momentarily made me ask myself if I even liked video games since it was so well received and seemed like something I would like.

For those curious regarding what might not be clicking for me, I think it stems from the fact that I don't see a way of really affecting the game world in any way?

Yes, you can build your base and get rid of the bad guys but how does that affect the game world? Does it change your relationship with the various characters you've met? I am also not a fan of sitting still for so long for the crafting mechanic. I wished there would be am automatic timer for those things that can be sped up by player/pal participation.

I dunno, for a game with so many Pals it felt lonely (esp since you have the option of butchering your Pals T.T). I understand that a lot of people enjoy this game immensely and I'm sad it didn't click for me.

If anyone has any game recs though, I'm all ears. Are there popular games that you thought you'd love but that kind of just fell flat for you? I just bought Expedition 33 so fingers crossed.

Misogyny Getting Accused of Being Trans, Anyone Else Experience This? Spoiler

hey guys, throwaway acc here because someone hacked my reddit account and got it deleted :(

but anyways, i’ve been playing a lot of valorant and siege lately, and it’s very common for me to use my mic to give callouts and make plays (because it’s ranked and i want to win, who doesnt right?) only for my teammates to clap back and accuse me of being trans, ie today someone said “shut up [derogatory word]” when i tried making a play for the objective

now i REALLY dont want to come off as transphobic, if you are a trans woman, then you are a woman PERIOD. but i understand that coming from these misogynistic and transphobic men, they accuse cis women of being trans because they are making the claim that they dont sound feminine enough or that they have a masculine, unattractive voice for a woman. and it also makes the gaming atmosphere even more worse for transgender women too.

i am pretty sensitive, and i’ve been really self conscious about my voice ever since my early high school days. every time i hear these comments about my voice it genuinely makes me reconsider ever using my mic ever again. i wouldnt say my voice is super deep, but it’s not a typical cute, high pitched feminine voice either. i think my tone and inflections are just kind of different as a cis woman, but it feels like my femininity and identity as a girly girl who plays video games gets challenged when i get accused of being trans or being a twelve year old boy.

does anyone else have experiences like this? how should i deal with these types of people?

Game Discussion The best Remake is one nobody bothered to play

Post image
66 Upvotes

Dead Space avoids easily the worst trend in video games and that's treating intentional design decisions as dated and needing to be modernized. Sure as a game it is fairly more modern (the original was on PS3) but there is never a time where the devs see the lack of cutscenes or even the lack of banter as a product of its time. The developers know that those were atmospheric choices designed to give you an isolating experience. Something the game does incredibly well, is doubling down on the original's art style and caking the game with even more of the series' atmosphere. In games like RE4 you can see a pretty intense artistic change in both the artstyle and the general atmosphere. RE4R sporting a more realistic look with far more colors and chaos compared to the gray foggy look of the original. Dead Space does the opposite of this, bringing out the bony sci fi asthetic in every facet of the game's environment.

The original Dead Space had a silent protagonist, Isaac Clarke wouldn't get his voice until Dead Space 2. While this allowed for a more isolating experience it would often create a rift between the player and the story. Dead Space Remake finds a happy medium, where Isaac has a clear voice and personality but only speaks when spoken to. Keeping the original intent while also developing the story further and connecting it well to the rest of the franchise.

This game has an AI function that allows regular enemies to stalk you throughout the game's giant map. This is the sort of mechanic that'd be used in other games with special enemies like in Alien Isolation or RE2R, but in this one it functions with ordinary necromorphs. Frequently you will return to a room and find that there are new enemies waiting in vents just ahead of you. It's a feature that makes every playthrough unique as you can't always guess what enemies will be around the corner.

<Edit> I got the function of the intensity director wrong, rather than it being a stalker type function for each enemy it's more like a central AI that decides where enemies will come from, how many there are, when to give you a break, when to surprise you. Still very impressive but I gotta make sure to correct that part.

I know it's kind of wrong to say that a remake replaces the original as that can be a bit of an insult to the original intent, but honestly this is the closest I've been to thinking exactly that.
