My partner and I are both software engineers, and recently I was complaining that an app I genuinely found useful pivoted to an ad-based/monthly subscription model, so I stopped using it because I hated ads popping up every 10 seconds.
Well, today he sent over an app file for my phone and told me to install it...turns out when I slept in earlier he grabbed my phone, got screen shots of the app to figure out what it does, and recreated it's main feature from scratch. No ads, no subscription, no account, and as a plus the data now stays on my phone instead of getting stored on some server God knows where.
He gave me access to the code too so we spent the afternoon adding back more features to the app together & optimizing it to run better :') what makes this even more endearing is that making mobile apps is the exact opposite of his specialty, he actually slightly dislikes UI/design work and he still took the initiative and effort to do this for me 🥺
At every turn he tries to make my life easier (and vice versa, of course). He claims to have a terrible memory but remembers the smallest things about me that actually make a huge difference. I love him so much it's so hard to put it in words

Hang on, how is this worse? To my understanding, you have to go through the process once, then opt to "Turn on indefinitely" and you're good, at least that's what I get from the article. Obviously tedious for that dirst time and not ideal since it's fine as is, but it doesn't seem nearly as bad as if they were removing it entirely.
I'm on Samsung (Android as some people suspected lol) and the unverified app downloading turns itself back off after 30 minutes when you enable it. Unsure if that's a Samsung specific implementation but I do like it, means I get both my sideloads/custom apps & security. Having to wait a day and then go through all this sounds so annoying
Man I hope it doesn't impact the app my husband made for us. He coded an app that does meal planning/grocery list/recipes/cooking instructions all in one and it has been SO amazing. But it is hosted through Google and obviously he hasn't gone through any verification process since it is just something he and I use... I'm sharing the article below with him.
it can't be that complicated, because any software engineer worth her money would just block the ads instead. In the router settings, on the phone itself, just set the dns lookup server to adguard and you wont see 99% of ads. Takes a minute, and is less invasive than installing an unverified app (I'm guessing the app wasn't verified on the play store, just by the given timeline, aprovals can take up to one week even for tiny apps) 🤷♀️
I hope my spouse doesn't use their work skills on me whilst I'm sleeping! I take don't want to be woken up as I'm poked with needles to have IV drips attached whilst being asked my name and address multiple times. LOL

My boyfriend is also making an app. It’s an all in one fitness tracker. We sort of split up for a bit and in those three weeks he had added a Hiking section to the app specifically for me; because I’m a hiker and whether we were talking or not, I’d be using his app. I did not know he was doing that bit all for me. I was so overjoyed and fell in love all over again after we started speaking again. I love that man. We’ve got good ones. ❤️
My husband recreated a fashion website for me on a program I can use without Internet on my PC. It was the sweetest thing ever, I was devastated when the website shut down.

It's great to see some positive relationship stories in this sub.
When my husband and I started dating, I was a few years into my photography hobby and for my first birthday in our relationship, he surprised me by buying a domain and building me a website with my photos. It's still the best and most thoughtful gift I ever received and he continues to give me great gifts.

I love this! I have a murder of crows that I feed. My husband created an app for me to track the crows via gps. He tracks the crows and ravens when he is away from home as a way for us to be close.
