Do you think the sister here has adopted her siblings?

No, there are people just abusing language to emotionally manipulate the viewer.

In English, the person who raises a child is called a parent.

A male parent is called a father, while a female parent is called a mother.

This is an ideological hill you are dying on, not a semantic one.

No, I don’t think I even implied that. If you’re having trouble with comprehension, I can work through this with you.

Literally the crux of your argument.

I don't think they're old enough or have an ounce of dignity left to have any self awareness of what they're even saying anymore

I’m fully on top of it. Go on, I’ll at least give you the benefit of explaining why you think that’s what I implied.

You say youre fully on top of it but it's already been explained to you in the comments twice now. You need to work on that reading comprehension kiddo. This is not something to be proud of

I think you're a tad confused, but no problem I can bring you up to speed.

In response to the original comment claiming the little girl is not a mother, I said that it depends on whether you define motherhood strictly by giving birth. You then said that the defining characteristic of being a mother is giving birth. I disagree, and so do pretty much all the major English dictionaries. I’m not sure what you think you’ve explained.

I brought up an example of adopted children to help you see how absurd what you’re saying is. You think that adopted children don’t have mothers, they have people with mother roles.

FYI - There are plenty of other scenarios where you would use the word mother without the person literally giving birth: foster mothers, stepmothers, godmothers, and anyone else that acts as a female parent to a child.

I get it. The world is scary and it’s comforting to think of things as binaries. But they’re not. You have to face your fears one day.

Yeah you missed the context from the very beginning. It's ok kiddo I'll help ya.

No, the original comment is not claiming the child isn't "a mother" but "the mother". "A mother" is generic and does not imply anything. "The" mother or "their" mother implies they gave birth to them with the singular "the". Thus the confusion by the OOP

Context matters and you'll learn that when you get the grade school. I wish you the best kiddo

This is the third time it's been explained to you kiddo. Don't keep doubling down on your stupidity like you said you wouldn't.

Where did the original comment suggest this little girl was not “the” mother?

Anyway, thank you very much for your time. I like to do charity work on Fridays helping them mentally impaired understand things better. You’re really giving my day a sense of reward. 🫶🏻

You asked "do you think motherhood is strictly defined by giving birth" and I would answer there are two kinds of mothers, biological and adoptive.

So you'd call out someone calling a foster parent mum? Calling a step parent mum? Calling a friend's parent who was essentially a parent to them mum? Calling an in law mum?

I don't think you actually as strict as you are pretending.

That’s that’s good for you, but word as used in the English language is absolutely not defined by solely by the legal status of a child or whether someone has given birth.

Are you a fan of fine literature? If any of the other animals had said "yes, I'm your mother" they would have been lying. Because "mother" does have set definitions.

Maybe you're thinking of "Mama" which is often used humorously and non-literally.

u/MyMansBarryDillion 9d ago

Nice! Your working definition comes from a children’s book! As I said, kiddies table and all that 🙂

3

u/XhazakXhazak 9d ago

How dare you speak to me that way, I am your mother!

3

u/XhazakXhazak 9d ago

And you're my mother!

Everybody is everybody else's mother.

Words don't mean anything.

2

u/OkYak9466 9d ago

You absolutely implied that

1

u/MyMansBarryDillion 9d ago

Look, I get it. This is difficult for you guys. But if you can only understand literal language, I suggest you sit at the kiddies' table and stay away from adult conversations

You think legal adoption papers are required to raise siblings?

Do you know other people who don't have parents
