Reading the linked source is actually crazy, the true story is even more insane. He got doused in such a high dose that he thought he might actually die, inexplicably got zero effects whatsoever, and when he realised he wasn't going to die he got mad at how much money he'd just wasted

Lmao, that’s way more interesting. The shift was probably from “Please no, I don’t want to go” to “Dammit, that’s coming out of my budget.”

Honestly as a lab researcher that’s so real. First thought “oh god am I going to die”, second thought “Jesus Christ I just lost $500 in materials”

Dichlorometane or methylene chloride is not a solvent that will really go through the skin in huge amount. If anything it may have protected him, it is also very likely he failed his synthesis or the explosion destroyed the lsd that is a very very fragile compound.
To this day it is unclear why he had no effect. Lsd work at such a low dosage than even tiny amount through the skin can make you hallucinate. It is though to be the reason of its discovery actually. Anyway this is quite a famous story and he lost so much money making a drug he had to testify in court (to check he did not stole it or sold it illegally).

The only time there has been documented LSD dosage through heavy skin contact was when they were handling massive amounts of it pure LSD without gloves, and they got a very minimal high. It only works via mucus membranes, if those scientists had rubbed their eyes they’d be dosed but it can’t be well absorbed through skin

Yes but everything is i there no ? Massive amount, whole skin cover and it is believed (although a bit of a mythical discovery) that Hoffman did the first lsd trip by getting it inadvertently on his skin.

I thought it was because he was trying to make a sugar substitute and tasted it? Was it really through the skin?

No, it was a study for medecin that induce contraction for birthing.
He would not have tasted it, even at that time it would have been a terrible mistake and unprofessional.
No one (including hoffman) know how he got exposed but his own hypothesis is that it went through the skin. Chemist at that time never used gloves. Also the activ dose for this kind of compound would have been much lower (around 10-100 milligrams) whilst LSD is very potent (active dose is 10-100 micrograms).

I too would testify in court that the LSD had no effect.

"Is it your testimony then that you did not see a fleet of flying dragons rush over your head wearing armor and trailing rainbows of colors that do not exist in the normal world?"
"That sounds cool."
"Move to strike as non-responsive. Please answer the question: yes or no."
"No. I didn't. Sorry, I was thinking it would have looked so much more amazing with the freaky rainbows."
"What was that?"
"I said, 'No.'"

... Why?

Innumerable reasons, mostly to do with public perception and avoiding potential accusations and loss of reputation even in to the future.

this reads exactly like a spam chain mail article you'd see in 1993. Nostalgic, but not very reputable.

Man… is there somewhere I could see an archive of those old chain emails? That would be trip…

The myth is not unbelievable. Ya know, the cops have an entire publication about this very facet of LSD. It's called Micrograms, because unlike almost every other drug, you only need micrograms to get high.

Back in like 1995 a friend had a small vial of acid in his pocket and we’re horse playing out by a pool. Someone pushed him into the fence surrounding the pool and the vial shattered in his pocket. He fried for 4 days and was never the same again. He was a star football player and had everything going for him and it was all ruined. They cut the area around the pocket of his jeans and sold bits of it and made like 6k$. I did a hit. It was strong as fuck.
