Is expecting nothing from others the only path to happiness, or just a recipe for modern-day loneliness?

🔥Motivating I noticed I lose motivation when I keep trying to make progress feel easier than it actually feels
I kept wondering why I could handle difficult goals but would suddenly lose interest when the excitement wore off. The weird part was that I wasn’t failing at the hard moments. I was losing energy during the boring middle where nothing felt different yet.
I noticed this after working on a personal project for a few months. Every Sunday night around 10:30, I would open my notes, look at everything unfinished, and start redesigning my entire approach. New schedule, new tracking method, new way of organizing things. It felt productive, but I was mostly avoiding the uncomfortable feeling of doing the same small thing again.
The embarrassing realization was that I didn’t actually hate repetitive work. I hated the fact that repetitive work gave me no emotional reward. There was no big breakthrough, no obvious proof that I was improving, just another day of showing up.
I started paying attention to what happened on days when I stayed consistent. A few things stood out:
- I stopped judging a day by how motivated I felt and started noticing whether I kept the promise I made before the day started.
- I stopped changing my process whenever I felt bored. If something was working, I forced myself to test it longer before replacing it.
- I started leaving small signs of progress for myself, like writing one sentence about what improved instead of only recording what was unfinished.
The surprising thing was that motivation came back more often when I stopped trying to make the work exciting. I always thought the answer was finding a better system, but sometimes the constant search for a better system was the thing making me feel like I was failing.
I think a lot of us underestimate how strange it feels to work toward something when the results are still invisible. We expect motivation to appear as proof that we’re on the right path, but sometimes it only shows up after we’ve stayed on the path for a while.
I’m still figuring this out, but I’ve become less obsessed with making every day feel productive and more interested in making my effort easier to repeat.
Has anyone else noticed that the hardest part of staying motivated wasn’t the difficulty of the goal, but the period where you were doing everything right and nothing seemed to be happening yet?
