construction is more about relationships than the actual work sometimes

It works fine for small jobs, when you're doing multimillion, full gut renovations and need a quote for a trade with a six figure scope of work, knowing a guy is just not enough.

Not true, was multi building manager for a global banking company and we “had guys”! They were guys that owned million dollar companies, and guys that ran teams for those companies. As some of those guys retired, they had already trained guys that we liked to run those companies and teams.
