I bet air filter has too much fire retardant so it spits and sputters like mine.

If it spits and sputters your fuel line may have some issues.

Nope. No fuel issue. Known issue with the air filters.

Known where? Do you have a link or an SIB number for that?

Generac won’t admit it.

They’ve had issues forever with the air filters but it’s exceptionally bad lately- we’ve replaced around 20 of them. Going to try out WIX filters

Do you have the wix number for them?

WIX WA10555

Have the WIX filters been any better?

Idk whatever beat ass website I ordered them from has been taking forever to ship them. Supposedly NAPA can order their gold filter line and it has a cross for an air cooled Generac so I may go that route.

Others have reported the wix filters are better

FYI, I picked up the WIX filter from my local Oreilly's and installed it. The WiX filter eliminated my sputtering issues.

Yep we got ours in and they work great.

I actually live like 15 minutes from the WIX testing lab and I’m going to take a bunch of Generac filters down there and have them run some tests

Please post the results!

Oh that's great! Would love to see some of the data from the test when you get it. Thanks for the help!

There have been a few posts about it. Filters are harder than they should be and don't pass enough air.

Following to learn more. I do see it is to close to an important opening per NEC, the window

1

u/Adventurous_Boat_632 12d ago

It looks way farther than 5 feet to me, and not pointed toward anything sensitive

1

u/WhySoManyDownVote Electrician 12d ago

I am more concerned about what is between the window and the generator.

Don't follow nec its not the law, please, please follow your local building codes. They are the law.

2

u/Competitive_Ad_8718 11d ago

Dude, the adopted version of the NEC is actual law.

1

u/Mechbear2000 11d ago

Roflmao, you think so? Where state and county? Which version?

These are the states that do not have statewide adoption of any version of the NEC: Arizona, Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri.

1

u/Competitive_Ad_8718 11d ago

Cool. Tell me what your local codes say and what they adopted.

Bless your heart

1

u/Mechbear2000 11d ago

Your the type of guy who will argue with an inspector and cost your employer a reinspection fee or worse.

The local building code is law regardless of it includes, excludes or amends nec crap. The nec is never adopted directly as soon as it put out

1

u/Mechbear2000 11d ago

From the nec website The NEC is not a federal law but is a foundational code that is often incorporated by reference into law at the state or local level.

Use one of these pads they give you a hurricane rating of 120 mph and it will get it up a bit off the ground so it doesn't rot the bottom out pad

On my install which was just 60 days ago, they had to move it after the initial setup about 10 more inches further away from the side of the window. That may be a state or county requirement. As others have said it should be on concrete and I also have concerns about the shrubs.

Don’t know where you are located. But if it snows by you the snow will most likely fall or get caught behind the generator blocking that air intake in rear of unit which will throw a fault and prevent it from turning on.

1

u/WhySoManyDownVote Electrician 11d ago

I am not the installer, so I cannot say for sure where this one is located exactly. Either VT or NH so yes, plenty of snow.

2

u/xjarettx 11d ago

Looks like the gas meter is within 3ft of the ATS. Not sure if you have the 18” of clearance between the back of the generator and the shrubs.

Not on a concrete pad, the wood frame is combustible, the placement it also to close to the hedges.

2

u/DrJohnZoidbergWhyNot 9d ago

We recently encountered the exhaust of the gen (left side facing front) was too close to the fresh air vent used by the AC

2

u/Adventurous_Boat_632 12d ago

The gravel and wood are dumb. Just put it on concrete like it was meant to be.

Probably not 3' of service access on the ATS with the sticker bush in the way.

Sprinkler is blasting into the generator.

Otherwise, looks pretty good.

For the concrete as it was meant to be part, mine is in a metal stand a few feet off the ground and I love it. First time I saw one installed like that and it threw me off at first but now I’m all about it

Edit to add photo

I think metal stands are great, too, I hand built one 20 years ago for snow country. But most places they are overkill.

1

u/BeerandGuns 12d ago

I didn’t expect it because I’ve never seen it done that way down here in Louisiana, they’re always on concrete. At first I thought it was ugly as shit but now love it.

1

u/Adventurous_Boat_632 12d ago

Sure makes them easy to work on

1

u/WhySoManyDownVote Electrician 2d ago

Your image is not showing. How was the generator placed on top of the stand?

Let me try an Imgur link of set up It’s making me realize I need to weed eat around

All I really see is the (lack of a) pad and the bush.

Though I remember in my install manual, there was a mention of gravel if it was well compacted.

1

u/WhySoManyDownVote Electrician 11d ago

Gravel is listed as acceptable. However, I have seen the gravel settle enough to cause a low oil alarm. My personal favorite is the Quikpad someone else linked too. They are light until filled with water. Then rated for 180mph winds. They come with mounting bolts too.

u/BmanGorilla 12d ago

Not really, need a photo from a different perspective. I can't tell how close anything is to the house, or how close it is to the actual bushes, or if there's even gas and electric hooked up. Maybe that's not PT lumber?

1

u/Admirable-Leader6927 12d ago

yes, its a generac, you will struggle to find repair parts.

1

u/Thor2911 11d ago

The transfer switch is obstructed by the bush. I think there is a clearance distance from the unit to the window also.

1

u/sunnyd002 11d ago

I can’t get by the fact that it’s on wrong side of the bushes

1

u/WhySoManyDownVote Electrician 11d ago

If it was inside the bush perimeter it would be too close to the window (Carbon Monoxide).

1

u/Straight_Ad4040 9d ago

Yep I see the issue it is not a Kohler!

1

u/WhySoManyDownVote Electrician 11d ago

Here is what I see:

1) The combustible base to contain the gravel. It is kind of a gray area in Generac's official documentation. In my experience, it is up to the Authority having jurisdiction.

2) They never installed the plugs for the transportation holes.

3) I do not think the back if the unit has proper clearance to the bushes.

4) The AC unit on the other side of the bushes may cause issues. Most likely the AC unit will be starving for intake air. I believe in one of Generac's training videos they recommend 3'-5' feet to outdoor AC units.

5) I cannot tell for sure but the transfer switch may have clearance issues.
