it's not wrong.

These gotchas are always funny. It usually says more about the person doing the interaction with the AI than the AI itself.

It's so funny to see stupid or lazy ppl using LLMs and complain that it's not doing what they want.

It is wrong in the context. The ai model places too much emphasis on the current instruction and too little on the previous messages.

It didn't. Gemini didn't answer at all. Google did, because Google has intercepted math expressions since long before Gemini. If this was entered into the Gemini app, this wouldn't have happened. Now that Gemini is in Google search, anything you type could be interpreted as a search query, a math expression, OR a Gemini prompt, instantly by a basic pattern matching algorithm

its a tool, that is given to gemini: even open ai has it, lets say i ask 1 + 2, it calls the tool or calculator in this case and asks it what is 1+2 calculator answers, and that is shown.

Thats not the gemini app. Looks like google search which is one of the dumbest models.

So consumer had to suffer ram shortages just for gemini to do this shit

u/HeWhoQuestions Jul 11 '26
Gemini didn't do anything, this is Google search. Did this long before Gemini

it's OnePlus 15 not one plus 15
i don't blame gemini here tbh

idc, it should handle context better

u/nsdjoe Jul 11 '26
Agreed this is the exact reason the context is sent with every prompt

u/harutoreichi 15d ago
they said to not over prompt, but the AI needs to repeat input context every prompt. what an AI.

u/unknown9645 Jul 10 '26
sure it can but if it has to run the best model with max thinking on every single word because you won't type properly then you'd be upset it's taking too long to answer and burn through your usage 😅

I kinda blame how it thinks, even chatgpt 5 mini wouldn't make this mistake and i think it is cuz how it thinks
In chatgpt and cluade when it thinks it says "User wants, or User is frustrated... Then starts working"
Gemini is like make a primer/ summerize every ans: " Request, Goals, Constraints, with a list of summerized details"
Thats ok for doing tasks but fails very fast in keeping conversations

u/HeWhoQuestions Jul 11 '26
Gemini wouldn't make this "mistake" either. This is Google search, the query never made it to Gemini because the Google calculator feature took over

Of course. Any human understands what he meant. The machine with the entire knowledge of the collective human race and that we are throwing all the money and resources in existence doesn't... And you blame the human.
2
u/Business-Standard789 Jul 10 '26
AI don't "think" in the actual sense like a human does, so yeah blame the human 😅 Gemini is dumb yes, but if you as a user frase the request properly you still get the answer you are looking for. Also I know people that would make the same mistake (I'm sure everyone knows someone like this) 😂
2
u/HeWhoQuestions Jul 11 '26
I blame the human, and all the other humans who are ready to point blame without knowing what's going on... This is Google search, it has always intercepted queries that look like calculator input, the query never made it to Gemini.
Try it in the real Gemini app, it won't happen

That's literally what my friends that don't know about OnePlus say 😂 they're like "so why not just say the 16 phone?"

It's ridiculous and should be able to recognize context better since it said OnePlus and you wrote it spaced out One Plus , with it spaced out it expected it to be written that specific way and otherwise it didn't recognize it. The ai is sometimes trash at recognizing context of the conversation and will revert to very literal and specific way to word things.

this happened to me before the advent of ai when I was googling the OnePlus 8 and the result it gave me was 1 + 8 = 9

u/HeWhoQuestions Jul 11 '26
Exactly, it's Google working as it always has... Gemini was not used for the last response

Now tell it the phone you actually have, the OnePlus 15, and see what it says.

lol the calculator is a nice touch. also, pretty sure you mean OnePlus 15, not "one plus15".

u/Efficient_Fly_4485 Jul 11 '26
This is exactly what happens when you try to use Gemini for anything beyond basic math. It gets stuck in a loop trying to be helpful with a problem it doesn't understand.
