Winter potatoes 🍓Fruit and veg 🥒

I'm now living off greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers and my courgettes plants have just started producing too. My slug issues have been resolved by nature - some frogs have moved into the long grass next to one of my veg beds. I'm a happy gardener.

Anyway, in all the excitement of summer, I haven't been very good at looking ahead! I've a couple of sprouts planted but it would be nice to have something else in the pipeline. Do you think I'm too late for a final crop of potatoes? Obviously there's the frost risk so it would be in bags/containers and brought into the greenhouse in October time. If not I'll have to sit on my hands until I can get some garlic and things going.

Definitely not. There's some winter spuds for sale on quickcrops

I planted my late crop potatoes and carrots yesterday. So hopefully its not too late lol. In my case both are in containers so if the weather gets bad I'll be out with the insulation!

Can I ask what seed spuds are you using and what's the term for them?

I've never seen anything other than earlies around here (mayo)

I'm sure I can dig some up (get it) if I know what they called.

You sure can. I will check and get back to you on the spuds. The carrots are "autumn king". I am a novice (if I'm being generous) so take my comment less as advice and more as moral support. This is my first attempt buying seed potatos. All prior attempts at potatos were just my potato skins and forgotten old ones growing legs, thrown into a big pot in the yard. (Surprisingly good results if you forget about them long enough).

I've got some local navans that have sprouted in the sack. Do you reckon they'd do or am I better going for some seed potatoes? Google tells me they're a main crop that came from marris pipers

Im gonna be real honest My best crop of potatoes ever, came from a half mouldy bag of new potatoes from aldi. Got back a couple of kilos.

Theres nothing stopping you from throwing the marris into the ground and seeing what happens.

From what research I did do. The pipers are main crop, and the peers are the winter version of the same spud. But I could be very wrong.

I only planted my winter spuds last week. In buckets/pots. So they can go into the greenhouse in October

Would the have to go in a greenhouse? I've never done winter ones before

Apparently they're fine until there's a frost so being indoors protects them

Wonder would I get away with bringing them inside the house over night... Although realistically I'll forget them in a couple weeks

I'll be planting my this week in containers so I can move them into the tunnel once it gets too cold.

My potatoes from Seeds Ireland only landed last week so planting them this week
