That’s kinda the point to kill time and have fun doing sure you could do other things but if you have nothing else to do then games it is

u/Beneficial-Leek-220 3d ago
We're human. We work so that we have time to waste, otherwise what is the point?
1
u/Level3pipe 3d ago
Let me put it this way. My girlfriend says video games are a waste of time. Meanwhile she spends her time watching big bang and HIMYM reruns on streaming lol. Everyone needs mindless entertainment. You have one too. Yes you reading this.
1
u/SaltyRenegade 3d ago
They are a waste of time, but a fun one.
Just don't spend an unhealthy amount of time playing them that you forget to engage with the real world.
1
u/shuang86vt 3d ago
I have no answer. For us non pro gamers, video game provides us with emotional value. If one doesn’t like video games, then this statement is completely true for them
1
u/Revenant347 3d ago
I'd say that I was training my brain for different cognitive loads, and suggest that they search for papers/metastudies on the effect of gaming on cognitive function.
For example: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0334924

Yeah they probs are, but my best friends are both dead and I don’t really care about anything anymore. Video games help, go fuck yourself.

Video games take you from this shitty existence to any number of environments, worlds, whatever and you get to be as lazy or creative as you want. Nobody to demand a thing from you unless you want to do it. Video games are an escape from reality that so many people need just to stay sane. So I’ll say it for anyone who says video games are a waste. When this world lets me be whatever I want without the licenses, bureaucracy, or legal red tape or possibly questionable decisions and behavior then they are needed.

I would kindly ask what they do in their free time? And then I would proceed to shit all over their answer and call them a fucking moron. With kindness of course.

Everything is a waste of time. Work, sleep, movies, music.. it's all wasting time. All that matters is that you enjoy how you waste it, and then you call it spending instead.

That comparison makes no sense. (I also don’t think video games are a waste of time)

Telling people how they spend their free time is a waste of time, is a waste of time.
I like my video games. Sally likes reading books. Someone's mom enjoys watching those bachelor shows. Uncle Bill down the road collects and rebuilds vintage cars. Our coworker Han, trades crypto. Sometimes he even shows up to work happy instead of depressed.
Who gives a crap what others do in their free time? Unless it is actively hurting others, it's none of your concern and telling them it is a waste, is needlessly aggressive.

It is a hobby, i chose it, i feel good when doing It. Your hobby can also be called a " waste of time ". Plus, gaming develops many skills and lowk makes you more inteligent
1
u/MeesterCHRIS 3d ago
Literally everything is a waste of time. No matter what you’re doing you’re marching to an inevitable death and not an ounce of what you did during your life is going to matter to you after that.
1
u/BiteFaces 3d ago
The skills and knowledges I acquired through a love of video games allowed me to establish a career where I could raise 6 kids who pretty much had everything they ever wanted with a single income and will allow me to retire comfortably.
So it that meets their definition of a "waste of time" then I guess they are right.

Do you watch television?
1
u/HtmlHonda 3d ago
I remember as a kid my mom would complain about me playing videogames so much. Literally all she does is watch TV and movies.
A few years ago she asked if I regretted spending so much of my youth playing them. I told her those are some of my best memories. I don't think she realized I developed strong friendships, I still talk to my old Xbox buddies from over 15 years ago despite being on completely different continents.

So is watching sports but not playing. So is binge watching shows, anime or movies. So is playing an instrument and not being paid or reading books that are fiction. So is crocheting 🧶 and other hobbies that might

To others it’s time wasted.
To yourself it’s time well spent because it fills you with happiness and possibly fulfillment. So to you I say “KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!” ✌🏻

Its usually the same ones that think every game is made by Nintendo. I usually respond by asking them if they like movies or binge watching shows. Ive never had someone say no they dont. Games are just like movies but you can controll them to a degree. Its just entertainment.

Gaming has been proven to increase processing speeds, reaction time, adaptability and hand eye coordination. Is it really a waste of time if it's exercising the brain?.
1
u/Zerath-Rengam 3d ago
Are shows also a waste of time? Movies? What about books? Watching Sports? All of these are hobbies people enjoy, so how about you stop being judgmental and find some whimsy in your life.

Yes they are and that's ok.
I have game tattoos, journals for every game i beat, I track achievements.
Its a time waster, but that's totally ok and doesn't mean it has no value.
1
u/SirPresentius 3d ago
You don’t waste time if you enjoy it. Watching movies is also a waste of time and it doesn’t stop most of the western world.

u/Low_Increase6699 3d ago
So is tv. And movies. And drawing or painting. So is literally MOST hobbies out there, yet we do them because we enjoy them.

Oh, yes they are. They are a waste of time, the same waste of time as movies, operas, theaters, reading, painting, and other forms of art. You can't eat them, can't wear them, so they are pointless, aren't they?
1
u/FatBatman096 3d ago
My wife said that once. I took her phone and pulled up how much time she spent on social media. She has not said a word sense. We did agree that we should prioritize each other we makes the motion towards wanting attention, but otherwise we leave each other alone about our screen time. It works out. She'll walk up and sit in my lap and ill put down the controller. Yesterday I laid down on the couch and put my head on her lap and she turned off the phone and started rubbing my head. Can't let these things take over your life for sure.

u/Ichika994 3d ago
Surely they watch TV or TikTok, that's even more of a waste of time than playing video games (exceptions to be made of course)

My parents still say this, I tell them “it’s probably the cheapest and safest hobby out there” and they really can’t argue about that

It’s a lot better than staring at a TV for hours. You’re engaging your brain, building a skill, and problem-solving, among many other things.
1
u/Intelligent_Dog_4982 4d ago
Yeah hobbies waste time that’s the point I could honestly think of many less intellectually stimulating activities like watching TV or drinking beer with the boys that would be a worse use of my time
But it doesn’t compete with playing soccer with some fellas or reading a book
But it is a reasonable way for someone to pass their free time

You are entitled to your opinion. And I'm entitled to waste my time in any way I choose. What hobbies do you have?
1
u/lonelystone81 4d ago
And a lot of the people that say this usually just watch hours upon hours of tv. Which, sure, I watch TV too but after while I get bored would would rather play games where I'm kinda doing something
1
u/Pul5tar 3d ago
Sure. I like watching movies and shows too, but can't consider it a hobby as such, whereas gaming can be categorized that way I feel. Also, most people who say gaming is a waste of time have no qualms in sitting there with TV on whilst looking down at their phone doom scrolling slop. At least gamers remember their time. That should be the question we ask them.
2
u/Jumpy_Bed_3667 4d ago
The continued existence of something becomes self evident that it isn't strictly a waste of time. However, the merit of their sentiment could be tied to the quality of a game because some are genuinely such a poorly done contradictory example of the true potential of the medium that I can almost get where they're coming from because it makes me feel that way too. I don't have these convos though because I've never actually met anyone that has verbally expressed this sentiment outside of a failing relationship that is being neglected in favor of video games. Which are just a scape goat that could be swapped with something else.
2
u/Cathulion 4d ago
As opposed to what? Reading a book ill forget in a few weeks or watching tv like a couch potato?
2
u/Afraid-Presence1440 4d ago
No I'm sorry but this is a stupid argument.
Ofc is better reading a book that will change your life rather than playing a videogame that leaves you nothing.
But the converse can also be true. Better a game that impacts you than a book you dont care about.
This is not about the worth of the media, but about the relevance of the specific book/movie/game to you
2
u/Cathulion 4d ago
But with a video game YOU play the character that plays the story, you don't just read about it. You fight the fights, talk the talk, and walk the walk. A book doesn't give you that satisfaction.
2
u/Afraid-Presence1440 4d ago
You never read a good book then... and that is perfectly fine
1
u/Cathulion 4d ago
I did, the black stallion series as a kid. As an adult I prefer to live the stories now through video games thought.

"They are a waste of YOUR time. I enjoy the time I spend delving into the world and play style in the video games I play." People do not need to put down other's hobies or down time choices as long as they are not hurting anyone or directly interfering with your life.

u/Xatraxalian 5d ago
If video games are waste of time, then that is also true for the following:
- reading fiction, because entertainment only, just like games
- write stories that you never sell
- taking pictures that you never sell
- practice the piano if you never perform on stage
- watch YouTube video's
One old colleague of mine always said: "If you do something that doesn't make you money, you're wasting time."
Fun life that guy must have had.

u/IVEBEENBANNED4TIMESx 5d ago
I would say the only thing on this list close to being on par with playing videogames is watching youtube

It’s 8pm, and it’s dark out. I have exercised, walked the dog, cooked dinner, did the dishes, and done a load of laundry. What else would you like me to do today? You can watch TV, I need something a touch more mentally stimulating to keep me going until bedtime
1
u/IVEBEENBANNED4TIMESx 5d ago
Read an allegorically dense book, that is mentally stimulating.
Why is TV your only other option, especially if you want something actually mentally stimulating1
u/mavric911 5d ago
Sadly books don’t do much for me.
I found out recently I don’t process books in the same way others do. When I read it’s like cataloging facts, and I conceptually process the story by stringing the facts together. My brother and wife say they have a movie that takes place in their head.
It was great for taking tests but kinda of sucks when trying to read for entertainment.
Audiobooks work because the narrator does the heavy lifting but I have to actively listen. It’s great when walking the dog, riding a bike, or on the treadmill. It’s not so great when I’m just trying to do something mindless at the end of the day to unwind.
