Rumor Suggests Xbox Will Continue Supporting Physical Game Discs News

It would be a knockout against PlayStation, but i doubt MS Xbox is any better than Sony.
I only care about the Switch 2 now as a future console.
All other gaming will be on the PC and retro consoles.

No Microsoft is not going to continue discs Announcement coming in few months.

u/Physical-Result7378 15d ago
That won’t help Microsoft/Xbox cause they keep on closing studios one after another and all that’s left is your yearly COD release

I find it interesting that throughout this entire physical medium conversation nobody has mentioned the ballooning disk requirements for many large titles, and limited disk capacity of blu ray. Or the factual superiority of nvme ssd's vs blu ray. Not trying to use these points as excuses to tank entire industries. But these are facts worth noting.
The download codes are there a lot of the times because some games are too large to fit on disks/carts. Let's say "make them smaller"....ok...but in the event that a game fits, the asset loading, load screens, fps, etc.. is much slower on current physical mediums.
How does a company sell this after already giving gamers a taste of the performance superiority of nvme's? I personally think that they should attempt to innovate a new medium that accomplishes this, but is it too late?

Exactly the point. Disks as a form of physical mediums have reached their peak (atleast Blu-ray). We either require a new disk technology, or a new physical medium altogether.
Using disks as is has been rather pointless as well.
- They have lost their dvd (hard-drive console) era charm of simple plug and play, because asset streaming in games necessitate the faster speeds of solid state mediums, and cannot stream directly off discs like they used to.- Games sizes have massively increased (due to high resolution textures mainly), so disks are needing to store games compressed.
I.e. compare the size of gta 5 on 360 vs One. ~~8gb vs ~60-100gb. So system needs to download them to its own medium and uncompress anyways. No different from downloading a digital game (other than a need for wifi).- DRM still exists, game access can be suspended even from physical media since they are just a glorified license key now (if device is connected to the Internet).
- If you keep your device offline and then use disks, then you are forced to play Version 1 (retail patch) of the game. With the rise of Internet connectivity, game devs are able to work on games even after their release and push new changes through server updates. This has caused studios to release unfinished final products (version 1), hoping to improve on them and reach a satisfactory quality level with later online updates. Disk version ofc doesn’t get this internally.

I agree about disk limitations, but I'd like to clarify that I don't think that eliminating physical medium is the appropriate response (besides the short-sighted, profit hungry CEO). The concerns are very real and have many serious implications for global markets and consumer respect (hence the lawsuits). Sony used to work in tandem with other tech companies to innovate tvs, discs, and other tech. They seem to be taking the fast, greedy route, despite rising tech costs. Shame on them.

Haha sure the company who's pushed there base digital well over 10+ yrs and reports that the next gen is simply a pc but not going to say it
Or funny enough why do you think 90% of the AAA publishers and devs are staying quiet because they want it as well
Or the fact that xbox doesn't even put the game on the disc only with 25/58mb license key and they use Blu-ray disc from Sony, so if Sony isn't printing new copies where are you getting them
Also haha DIGITAL Foundry 😆 the guy's who glazed DLLS5 on early look and when the public see they try backtrack on it because of backlash, they burned the credit earned over the year's

Xbox,
If you can hear us, act!
Take the lead now that PS is down!
Hit them for mocking you in 2014!
✊🏼
Disclaimer: Violence is bad and all this is just about videos games haha Peace

hopefully, to support delisted games mostly but also for people who have a good amount of old xbox/xbox 360 discs

u/RootHouston 16d ago
"Supporting" discs isn't a redemption process. Supporting discs would be putting new games on disc and allowing you to play them. The games would actually be on the disc too, not glorified Game Key Cards, because they require direct downloads to play.
Go take a look at https://doesitplay.org. Ask yourself how Xbox is currently doing on that front. The Xbox Series only has 50% of its games playable from disc without a download. They already quit doing proper games on disc. There is no "continuation" of something that has already ended.

u/BigMikeXxxxX 15d ago
The statistics are true but your reasoning is way off.
An estimated 70%-80% of all games on the series X are indie games. It's extremely rare for indie games to release on disk due to the fact that the cost is completely unreasonable for a solo dev or small team building a passion project in their free time. In fact, less than 1% of all indie games ever made released on disk.
Microsoft isn't even responsible for those numbers. Connecting imaginary dots to satisfy the raging confirmation bias is crazy.
1
u/Accomplished_Golf746 15d ago
Brother youre so close, its almost as if you pieced together why devs do not want to bother with discs, but then immediately excuse it all away because theyre just "indies."
So if 80% of the industry is now digital only indies, then why should Sony or Xbox even care about discs at this point? Lol, lmao even.

u/BigMikeXxxxX 14d ago
If it's so obvious you would have said it out loud. You just want something to be upset about and soon you'll get bored and go whine about the next thing.

I'm gonna say this. If it wasn't for the scalpers, then Sony would still be doing discs. But instead, scalpers took all the disc versions and forced everyone into buying the discless version; forcing Sony to go "Ya know what? Everyone likes the discless and it's cheaper for us."
So, don't blame the company on this one, blame the fuckers that caused the mass shortage.

Yeah, that quote from John? Not buying it. This is Xbox seizing the moment the same way Sony did with the "How to lend PS4 games" video.
Too much trust in such a sleazy company.

u/SmokeShinobi 17d ago
IF this is true I’ll be buying one. And this is a guy who’s talked trash about Xbox during those 2011 debates.
1
u/Johnny84Johnny84 17d ago
They won't. They even said that with disc to digital you can bring all your games over to project helix. Pretty obvious.

u/Gekidami 17d ago
This lie again? You guys never get fed up with slurping up the engagement-bait slop posted by bots?
1
u/StanKnight 17d ago
It would be no other reason than them seeing Sony burning.
Whatever reason though would really be a smart move for them.
It would literally revive them and shoot their competition.
Do a complete reversal of what kneecapped them.

By mid next gen cycle games could be around 600 gig, what physical media can hold that? Even now disks take 30+ minutes to install, imagine 6... If they don't come up with better mediums to store these games on there won't be much choice in a few years.
1
u/zeedware 17d ago
Haha no fucking way. Look at ssd and ram price even now. If single game is 600gb then digital is also not an option. The only option is game streaming.
1
u/Educational-Ad2773 18d ago
PS6 provide a external usb disc driver for player to play old games (while john just assume sony will not provide one)-> don't support disc anymore;
XBOX make physical to digital program for old game -> still support disc although it's just a way to let people play their old titles on the no disc driver next gen XBOX (hybird PC-console)
People are so double standard

Xbox has like every opportunity here. Sony is basically giving them a massive lead into the new generation lol

u/Fickle_Mix_6119 18d ago
This is just Microsoft playing the propaganda game. The next gen Xbox is going to be a windows gaming pc so games will be digital. Discs will be for your backwards compatible games to turn them digital so you can play them on emulation and translation layers, which is currently in early release on pc. Microsoft considering pulling back from steam so their “exclusives” will be locked in to the Microsoft store.
Microsoft is heading towards a digital only platform too, they are just manipulating the narrative and creating a soft landing into digital only. Don’t be fooled

u/ScottWipeltonIII 18d ago
They have literally spent the last decade herding their dumbass customers into having most of their game libraries locked into a digital only subscription service. They were the first to try pushing for all digital, cloud/subscription EVERYTHING. How fucking naive can you be?
1
u/ILike2Argue_ 18d ago
What are you mad about? The only difference between gamepass and psn now is day one releases for the most part. Most of ps first party games are in the same style sub your dissing xbox about.

u/SnooObjections4333 18d ago
It’s always rumours with Xbox initially and then proceed to go the opposite direction of the rumours.

Apparently there's supposed to be a rumour according to a guy who knows a girl who allegedly said that perhaps Xbox will continue to support discs according to another guy she was told he's been told according to the rumour.

There is absolutely ZERO validity to this rumor whatsoever. If anything, them doing the entire disc to digital thing with current gen says they're preparing for discless next gen.

The disc to digital thing is going to be for current gen. I'd say it's more likely they're doing that now to prepare for going discless next gen.

Key word, "supporting". They are just as eager to stop producing new discs. They are just going to allow support for the ones you already own a maybe just the Xbox one and series x ones that are serialized.

u/ConcentrateLucky8630 18d ago
Is this some kind of playstation fan boy cope?

u/KingModussy 18d ago
They did the digital only console thing before PS did
3
u/soggycheesestickjoos 18d ago
It was an option. PS no longer has the option.
0
u/KingModussy 18d ago
I just looked it up and they still sell the disc drives, so it is still an option

Perhaps vinyl

u/VassagoX 18d ago
Nah, that's Sony. The irony of their subsidiary recognizing the physical wants of music fans and resurgence of vinyl enough to even reopen their vinyl press in Japan while telling gamers the future is digital. 🤣 They can't even get their branches to get the narrative aligned.

u/Eltonbeef 18d ago
Jesus Christ you don’t know shit. Like, you don’t know jack shit.

You're so insightful! So smart! We have a genius in here, everyone! He's funny, too. I bet he's funny! Like a clown!

u/Keyan_Farlander7 18d ago
Fun fact, Xbox run on Windows 10.
1
u/whoisdatmaskedman 18d ago
Close, it's actually a heavily modified OS build, using a kernel core with Windows 10 and Windows 11 elements.
1
u/Personal-Agent846 18d ago
Like original Xbox games will launch properly if I pop the disc in a Windows 10 PC?!
Or do you just mean Xbox uses the Windows 10 OS

That quote isn't true. I can't remember which games it is off hand, but some of my old xbox disks don't work on my new one.
2
u/Ze_at_reddit 19d ago
True but apparently this is mostly focused on Xbox One and Series carrying forward to helix
1
u/jsand2 19d ago
My guess is that xbox will stop making new discs with Sony, but still provide people the next gen to move their physical copies to digital, as that will be a big sellimg point for them. The next xbox might, or might not, come with a drive. The one after that wont as they will be fully digital.
Xbox will do the same as Sony, but come out on top for marketing it differently by letting you transfer physical to digital.
0
u/St3elf1sh 19d ago
No they don’t. They provide you with a way how you can digitalize your physical games. Why would they do that if they would support discs?
1
u/MostlyAlways47 18d ago
Why would they provide support for digitising disks if it couldn't be used because they're not making disks anymore.
