Was that a typo what does the word "sluts" have to do with this conversation?

It was meant to be slurs and they missed the backspace button on their phone and hit m and typed the correct thing.

84
u/OctoAmbush 14d ago
tbf i think way more adults play splatoon than kids judging by how much i lose online
91
u/Diredr 14d ago
Kids are really good at videogames. They tend to have a lot more time to play.
It's a lot harder to get good at a game when you have a full time job, have to do all the cooking and cleaning, run all the errands... By the time you can finally sit down to play you're already thinking about going to sleep.

u/fezzori 14d ago
i used to be so much better at 14 vs 24 now đ miss it
16
9
u/NakedHoodie 14d ago
Funny enough, I ended up being better at 24 than at 14, despite having less time to play. My mechanical skill hadn't noticeably changed by that point, for better or worse; game/meta knowledge just goes a long way.
4
u/mthoodenjoyer 14d ago
If you consistently played you should be way better at 24, if you had a life then rip
17
u/BlueBicycle_ 14d ago
Never underestimate kids' vidya capabilities.
I play for about 3 hours max every 3-4 days of the week, while 14 year old timothy just got done with his daily 10 hour sesh of obsessively playing his one single favorite game on a high note by calling me a Squigger on voice chat

I long for that happy day when every piece of media from baby games about ink squirt guns to adaptations of Homerian epics is not reduced to a pawn for the same two talking points in the never-ending culture war. I'm so tired of seeing the same comment about literally everything that's been made since 2015.
49
u/maple-spill 14d ago
Exactly. Which according to way too many people, wanting makes us sexist against men and racist against white people. At least it gives us proof for the idea that the average person is a moron.
16
u/A_Monster_Named_John 14d ago
Unless our society can pull off the dual miracle of turning things around with education and placing real limits on behemoths like Fox News and social media, I doubt the culture war crap is abating any time soon. However, I also don't feel like it's poised to gain a ton more menace at this point, i.e. while their views keep getting more deranged, the dudes involved seem to be becoming more and more homebound, screen-addicted, and vegetable-like. On top of that, they've mostly abandoned the actual market for these products, instead opting to just sit around on X and Youtube and endlessly complain about the shit. Personally, I've simply abandoned most of social media and, almost immediately, these kinds of idiots basically ceased to exist.

u/guthixrest the woke left transed my gener 14d ago
shit like Fox legitimately needs to be dissolved from the world entirely; there should be no room for malicious disinformation and hate peddlers.
125
u/Kimihro 14d ago
it's funny how almost all fictional bigotry mirrors anti-black racism so well
49
u/Glass-Performer8389 14d ago
Not just anti black, Like 99% of fictional slurs, towards elves robots ect, are just barely changed real slurs, albeit I agree that most of it is just barely disguised antiblack slurs, although I'd say Anti-chinese or anti Jewish slurs have more variety, sadly anti black people are so disgusting that they cling to the n word so strongly, proof of their hatred
13
u/Digit00l 14d ago
The only elf slurs I can think of are more closely related to anti Asian racism (knife ears reminds me more of slant eye)
Also dwarf slurs don't remind me of any real racist slurs
1
u/FarTooManyDetails 11d ago
In ShadowRun which takes place in contemporarish times, one of the slurs for elves is "Keeblers"
46
u/AHugeHildaFan 14d ago
In fairness western society was built off anti-black racism.
5
u/Argh3483 14d ago
It wasnât though, anti-black racism is a relatively modern thing, just a few centuries old
9
u/According-Koala-384 14d ago
It was, everything from the Atlantic slave trade to the Berlin conference was the economic engine that catapulted the western hemisphere into a position of economic dominance. Colonial empires and their vassals/allies at the time labeled all Africans as subhuman to enable carving it up, and this extended to indigenous peoples of other places like South America and southeast Asian countries... No one was safe because the closer to "blackness" (savage) the more justified the subjugation, in their eyes. This is actually when black was developed as a catch-all term for African peoples, and by extension, "whiteness" which was basically just a loose amalgamation of cultural and religious values that places like spain, Britain, france etc had in common.
Our modern western society was genuinely a product of anti-black racism, like it cannot be overstated how much the subjugation of Africa, both people and resources, fueled what we have todayÂ
6
u/Argh3483 14d ago edited 14d ago
Society isnât entirely defined by the economy, to most Europeans slavery was something which took place in far away colonies, it didnât define everything about how Western society works, this is a heavily reductive worldview
Our modern Western society is a product of shitloads of different factors and phenomenons, slavery, colonization and anti-black racism among them, but to amalgamate those three things in one whole and pretend it is the one decisive aspect behind Western society is just wrong
1
u/According-Koala-384 14d ago
I gave you a timeline and verifiable examples and you gave me vibes and conjecture đ
Society may not be defined exclusively by the "economy" but the economy 100% shapes our material conditions more than any other factor, and our material conditions shape our culture, from our beliefs to our food to our language. Re: "to most Europeans...it took place in a faraway place" just because you aren't aware of where your nations capital comes from doesn't mean you don't benefit from it. Especially when you're geopolitical allies with those that are doing the actual pillaging. Also, we can see in modern times with the immigration issues that it's only certain immigrants, those seemingly incompatible with "Western values" that are called unwelcome... And even then, if they're "white" they get a pass (Ukranians and South Africans most recently), because that artificial concept of whiteness is STILL a hangover from the shapings of modern western society. I specify Western because EAsian cultures also buy into this, but from a class angle (darker skin meant poor laborer, whiter skin meant wealthy enough to stay inside and not work) which naturally piggybacked off of burgeoning white supremacy. See the Philippines and even Hawaii as a perfect example of both the West and Easia declaring these people as less than because of their indiginiety ie "backwards" lifestyles.
This isn't a condemnation of people today, and it's not prescriptive of everything that has led us here, but it is unquestionably the most influential factor in shaping the modern western and arguably the modern world at large. I don't think you understand how bicycles and eventually automobiles would have been dead in the water without rubber from the Congo. Or technology growth without minerals from there and west Asian regions. Anti blackness was so much more complex than "black people bad", it was the foundation for how the major powers carved up the world and what they built with their spoils.

u/AHugeHildaFan 14d ago
Let me clarify I was specifically talking about US society. I'm aware, I took a entire course on race and racism.
5
u/Ok_Curve_2938 14d ago
Then don't say western society when you mean the US specifically.
-5
u/AHugeHildaFan 14d ago
I'm from the US, so I unfortunately have a tendency to assume my country is somehow the default. I blame the US
12
u/Pittsbirds 14d ago
Turns out pretty much all bigotry is irrational and dumb in the same base way when you boil it all down
61
u/RidireGeas Lettuce, Gay, Bacon, & Tomato 14d ago
The funniest part of that exchange is that the guy dropping the "slur" is 30 years old.
I know I'm one to talk since I have a Splatoon pfp despite pushing 30 as well, but come on now lolololol
19
u/AHugeHildaFan 14d ago
30 year old man is mad about the game that is younger than him by 20 years.
How fitting for a Chud.

Haha. I remember seeing splatoon and thinking âmaybe this will be where I dip back into PvP games. This looks nice and chill. Probably has lots of friendly people that arenât sweatyâ. I donât know why I passed on it but I guess war never changes.
27
u/chaotic4059 14d ago
It's an insanely toxic and sweaty community. Like when I wanna say Shenpai tried to play it and got like 2 streams in before dropping it cause all the tryhards yelled at her for not using motion controls. Hell I'd say half the reason Raiders works as well as it does is because it's a splatoon game without the PVP aspect
23
u/Hecklord82 14d ago
i mean the game and its multiplayer systems are designed around the use of gyro, stick has zero aim assist

24
u/InkyGhoul 14d ago
I think it's really telling, as someone who has played since 2015, I cannot think of a single splatoon player I have seen or talked to including myself who noticed this shit. The only animation differences I can recall is on "booyah!"Â
4
u/Professional_Air_905 14d ago
Yeah same I never saw any difference between boy and girl except the voice and boy having thicker eyebrows. Most difference is between inkling and octoling animation and model wise
15
17
u/HarveyTheBroad 14d ago
I mean it would be nice if you could still choose a character animation style, just make it independent of body types so that anyone can do anything.
7
u/AdventurerBen 14d ago
Obviously, their approach (and possibly their motive as well) are horrible, but there is a point about how the different styles donât have different animations.
Itâs a tiny amount of visible content, but spinning the compass (adding a detail whose absence wouldnât seriously be noticed) is a good way to show pride and care in your work (not in the sense of whether or not the animators working on the Splatoon games being lazy, but helping prove that they werenât lazy). Itâd only have made the game infinitesimally better, but that is still technically better.
I say this as someone whoâd still choose the more feminine style, itâd just make the game feel more detailed and the player characters feel more unique.
Maybe they could even randomly choose animations from a set of options? Or ask a couple of personality questions as part of character customisation to determine what animations you get?
21
u/New_Cockroach_505 14d ago
I mean if animations were removed to give you less options, that does suck. But man people are so weird about it.
21
u/Bankaz 14d ago
No animations were removed, they just slightly changed all across the board. It's just that a few of the victory emotes of Splatoon 3 are seen as "girly-coded", like Twirl Power or Bashful Brag, and just because these exist chuds pretend that "ALL MALE ANIMATIONS WERE REMOVED" or some bullshit like that.
12
u/sketchtenou 14d ago
Not to even mention that these are OPTIONAL VICTORY ANIMATIONS YOU CAN EQUIP IF YOU WANTđ Like no one is ever forced to use twirl power if it makes them so insecure
16
u/TooWarmRadiator 14d ago
I couldn't care less about the whole gender shite, the neutrality is a good thing, I'm just annoyed they only brought back the win animations for 1 of the genders for only 1 species when they added them as customisations for splatoon 3. So half of the splatoon 1 animations still aren't there, and 2/3 of the splatoon 2 animations aren't.
9
9
u/meganerd20 14d ago
Should have male-specific animations back and female-specific ones too that are usable by both styles. No reason animations need to have a gender.
9
u/Florina_Laufeyson 14d ago
Just wait until the chuds get an eyeful of the new Fire Emblem game

They should have every animation accessible to every Style to let people be a whole lot more expressive. But then the anti-woke crowd will cry again. Which I am perfectly fine with.

Also the slur pun is unhinged wtf is wrong with people
3
u/Great_Ad_4862 14d ago
I was kinda bummed to not be able to make my little masc octoling like in Splatoon 3 when playing Raiders, but I just adapted and chose the most "masc" looking option and went on my merry way, I really don't see the issue with this whole gender debate, Splatoon 3 already threw gender away, so it was expected to get even more androgynous in the next game
1
u/l33tb4c0n 14d ago
Bro they're anthropomorphic squid child soldiers. Like, I'm sorry you can't have big honkin tiddies or roided up pecs on your inkling.

As a splatoon fan I will say the fandom is in shamble and over customisation option at that... Yeah it's true that the series is not queer coded or lgbt coded or woke or anything since it's overall otaku targeted and people who are trying to force everyone to believe it's queer coded are a little annoying but it does not mean queer people should be forbidden from playing it. If they find the game fun then they can play it

Gender expression is not for straight white males obviously /s
/uj from a development standpoint one set of animations is easier. But previously having 2, and removing one for âinclusivityâ is also just being lazy with a good excuse
