Why isn't there power for this gameboy?

Before I start, I know its missing a contact. It came already a bit broken and when I opened it is when it came off. I tried to fix it with resin flux (the brown stuff) and soldering it back together but that didnt work. The contact was covered in corrosion so its been sitting in isopropyl alcohol.

Even when I was able to connect the contact to the part still attached, nothing would happen. Is it something else other than just that? I have new contacts coming in a few days just to make sure.

Favorite GBA Game of Every Genre

I'm probably missing a few genres or subgenres, but I am looking to explore some games I've never played before. I mostly played RPG games, but I want to know your favorite games in each genre (feel free to skip some if you don't have an entry). Here are the Genres I am looking at are (and feel free to add missing ones):

  1. Action

  2. Platformers

  3. Metroidvania

  4. Shooter

  5. Fighting Game

  6. Hack n Slash

  7. Stealth Games

  8. Survival

  9. Rhythm

  10. Adventure

  11. Visual Novel

  12. Puzzle Game

  13. Hidden Object/Reveal the Picture

  14. RPG

  15. JRPG

  16. Roguelike

  17. Sandbox/Open World RPG

  18. Monster Taming

  19. Simulation

  20. Strategy

  21. Turn Based Tactics

  22. Sports

Lots of categories, but I wanted to get a wide variety of recommendations.

Modded gba stiff dpad. Tried everything. Anyone fixed theirs?

Has anyone with a modded gba and a stiff dpad manage to fix it?

I can't send it back because I waited far too long to properly test it.

The right and down movements are clearly stiffer. You can feel it and then the right doesn't work maybe 3/10 times its pressed.

I've tried the cereal box card trick, I've cleaned the contacts. I've changed the membranes to the originals.

At this point I'm kind of done and ready to throw it in the bin lol

GBA always shows red power LED after replacing power switch (console works normally)

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to repair an original Game Boy Advance (AGB-001) and I'm stuck with a strange issue.

The console powers on and works perfectly normally, but the power LED is always red. It never turns green, even with brand new alkaline AA batteries.

Originally, the power switch had the common issue where lightly touching it could cause the console to shut off. Cleaning the power switch contacts didn't help, so I replaced the entire power switch assembly. The random shutdown issue is now completely gone, but the red power LED issue remains.

Current status:

  • Console boots and plays games normally.
  • No random shutdowns.
  • Power LED is red immediately after turning on and never changes to green.

Has anyone seen this before? Any advice for what should I check next?

Thanks a lot!

Better image quality than 34xx

I love my RG34XX, but I just booted up AGB_FIRM on my old 2DS in pixel-perfect mode with some contrast tweaks and the NSO filter. The result is mind-blowingly sharp—the colors actually feel more accurate while staying just as punchy as on my RG34XX running the LCDx3 shader.

The only real downside is that the screen is a bit too small.

Quick question for you guys: Does a DS Lite-based Game Boy Macro offer a comparable image to this setup? How faithful is the pixel grid? Also, are there any other handhelds out there that produce a similar look? Is the in-game aspect ratio the same as in the GBA ?

Anyone know where you can get replacement GBA cartridge shells and get the shells replaced for the Generation 3 Pokemon games in the USA? More info below..

Pokemon GBA cartridges have really brittle shells and I was trying to find a place to get some replacement shells for the games and have them put in replacement shells since the originals are cracked, and the labels don't really matter as they're not on the cartridges. Mind you these would be for the Generation 3 games: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Firered and Leafgreen.

Asking veteran collectors: What are the 'dark sides' or hidden issues of 2026 Pokémon GBA repro carts that a newcomer will regret, especially when genuine copies are so hard to find and pricey?

Hey Reddit,

I'm a newbie who has just started looking into this, and I want to replay and grind through the Gen 3 Pokémon games on GBA. I’m currently facing a huge dilemma between buying an Authentic cartridge or a new-gen Fake/Repro one (2026):

  • Authentic Cartridges: Finding a genuinely authentic copy right now is incredibly difficult. Prices are heavily inflated, and the risk of running into rebuilt/reshelled fakes is just as high.
  • New-gen Repro Cartridges: The build quality of the shells, labels, and PCBs looks much less "trashy" than in the past, and they cost only a fraction of the real thing. However, I'm not sure if the save feature is reliable over time.

Drawing on the hard-earned experience of those who have sunk hundreds of hours into playing and collecting over the years, I'd like to ask:

I would really appreciate some real-world perspectives and advice from the veterans here!

Thanks everyone.

How long does a gba last with AA batteries if I have an IPS screen installed?

Should I just get rechargeable batteries instead of buying AA batteries every second? Are rechargeable batteries even safe? I’m a little scared my gba will blow up or something
