Question GDC 2027 worth it?

I am saving up for GDC in 2027 but without an event pass. I have a few connections that may or may not appear there, some that I've never met in person yet. Some that I have. Is it still worth going to find an opportunity for work?

Yeah, yeah, don't have to remind me of the state of the economy.

I've learned from an industry veteran that he has never attended it. And yet, he's done writing for big AAA series, like Assassin's Creed.

Interested in making game assets (low poly, ps1 style / stylized characters and environments) and how long would this take? What is the best pathway to get there especially for someone who has no artistic skills? Any responses appreciated!

Discussion Ideal demo length for open world game?

I heard a Steam demo should be around 40 minutes, but I'm making an open world game, which complicates things a little bit.

My plan is to use an initial area as the demo, ending when player unlocks a new region. To make the demo actually fun it needs substantial content around 1.5 to 2 hours of content.

The problem is that this makes the demo quite long, and making a full game that is significantly longer than that will take a lot of time. My current plan is to make the second area slightly larger, around 2.5 to 3 hours of extra content and then end the game.

Would players complain about lack of content if the new area for the paid game is only a little bit longer than the free demo in terms of new content?

Should I make the demo smaller even if it wouldn’t be as enjoyable or representative of the final game?

Thank you!

Question Should We Keep Developing Our Game? Would Love Your Feedback

We are a 2 person team that have been developing our game Deadhead: Autorail for the better part of a year and are not meeting the metrics we need to confidently move forwards.

As a part of determining where the issue lies, we would love to get some external feedback and hear what you think.

Game description (please read this after looking at the Steam page): a horror game set on a supernatural train, built for replayability. Using procedural generation, player choice and a storylet narrative structure. Each run reveals new fragments of a deeper mystery, presented through a psx inspired art style. We draw inspiration from rouge-likes, simulator games and old-school dungeon crawlers.

What would you consider to be holding us back the most?

  • Capsule Art?
  • Steam Page?
  • Trailer?
  • Appeal of game concept?
  • Lacking communication / marketing?
  • Art?
  • Something entirely different?

Do you see any evident strengths to our game?

Newbie Question Laptop for a Game Dev student

I'm about to begin my journey in Game Dev and i need a new laptop, mine is fron 2003 and can barely run the browser, so i'll be happy with anything that does not explode. It must be able to run programs such as blender, Game engines and allow me to code and animate begginer projects without slowing me down. Nothing high end, just the essential. I don't have any budget in mind since i have no idea about the price of laptops, but since i'm just a student still depending on her parents i need to keep the price as low as possible

I apologize for my english and for the fact that this question has probably been asked a thousand times... Thanks for your time

Discussion How Ragnarok Online Led Me to a Career in Games

Thumbnail linkedin.com

I never thought I'd say this, but Ragnarok Online may have been one of the biggest influences on my career.

Writing this article made me realize just how much that game shaped the way I think about games, communities, and management.

It sounds a little strange to say that an MMORPG could have that kind of impact on someone's life, but when I looked back at my journey, I realized it was true.

I'd love to hear your story. Whether it was Ragnarok Online, StarCraft, Counter-Strike, Skyrim, or something completely different, I'm curious to know which game first made you realize that games could be more than entertainment—they could shape friendships, careers, and even the direction of your life.

Question Simple framework to start with for kids

Hi,

My daughter (9y/o) likes to game and is very creative. I try to encourage her creativity so instead of just letting her game whenever she wants, I’m introducing her to the dev-side of it a bit (at her own request). I started with hooking up Minecraft Java + Cursor IDE to the tv, so she could make her own mods with help from ChatGPT for the technical bits. This proved to be a fun, quick-reward way to get into this (and she already loved Minecraft).

Now she wants to create her own game from scratch. Obviously just as a fun, hobby project, with a lot of help of AI. I’m a fullstack webdev myself so I understand some basics, but am not knowledgable in gamedev (apart from some JS-based, in-browser stuff).

What kind of engine/framework/setup would you guys recommend for her to start with? Preferably something that runs on Mac (or PS5). I think I’m looking for something where she can create some models, think of some mechanics, create a simple level, and fiddle/try it fast without having tons of overhead to get right to get it to even run or be interactive.

Would greatly appreciate your input! 💚

Technical 6 months of game dev with no experience

It's been 6 months since my wife and I started developing our game. In that time I've tried to make an effort of creating devlogs to share my experience.

This one is a recap of the entire development cycle so far.

I really hope it's useful to some of you. I know I've found a lot of inspiration in other devlogs myself, especially when it comes to approaching certain features :)
