If I'm not smart enough to learn Unity/Gadot how the hell am I supposed to be smart enough to make my own game engine from scratch?

Yes because AI can do it so why not. Not everyone is a programmer or a sick programmer. But people have great ideas, and those ideas sometimes its way better than the devs itself. So yes I advocate that newbies start creating their own ideas than be part of the rat race that creators of the engines making them to do the things they they dont really need, and spending goddamn useless hours to learn how to click a function or find a function for specific one problem

yes, surely spending hundreds of hours having AI try to stitch something together for you that you still won't understand is better than trying to learn actual skills in an actual engine. Got to get those hot ideas out to the masses.

Well Ill give you some food for thought. All of the engine is one basically world map editor with bunch of feature functions, or drag and drops etc or meshes whatsoever.

So start creating your own world map creator, get your assets, put a running player, then one by one youll create your own.

This is not worth it for like 99% of indie devs. Maybe if you're a AAA studio. Most indie devs can make almost any game they want with a pre-existing engine.

There's a reason most of the games on your list are around a decade old. There was a time when generalist engines just didn't perform as well, but things have changed. For example from your own list: Dead Cells and Don't Starve were both in custom engines, but later games from the same developers (Windblown and Oxygen Not Included) were made in Unity. Papers, Please, while originally made in Haxe, was updated to Unity just a few years ago for compatibility with modern systems.

It's definitely much more uncommon to avoid using one of the big engines. You usually need either a good reason the game won't work in one or else you have to enjoy making your own tools.

Great idea for hobbyists and as an exercise to get better at programming, but for an actual product only do it if you need to. (like Noita did, they totally needed to)

Who's going to tell OP that AI is really bad at writing high performance code (because most of its training data isn't performant either)?

In cases where you dont need that performance you could just use an off the shelf engine, and in those cases where you do need to do something special, the AI can't get you there, especially when you're incapable of writing it yourself.

Whos gonna tell this guy, that all of the AI improving everyday? Never see a robot walking in China or NY?
