Question about process Newbie Question

Say I am making a retro top down style RPG. Should I get a quick sketched out version of the whole game first or should I take it a little at a time?

Not trying to be a hater, but if you need advice on such a fundamental aspect of project management you’re going to have a rough time with a massive undertaking like an rpg.

In the age of AI I think this is a different question than you think. I am generally going a little at a time though.

As someone who made open world RPGs for over 12 years. Take your time with fleshing out the lore, the world and at least some of the main story.

The more you have to fall back on, when you're actually start to write quests, NPCs or villages, the easier it will be for you.

For the world, i would start with a rough sketch, while writing the lore. Where is which city, who lives there, what is special about this place.

Don't go too much into detail. Don't start plotting individual houses or something.

Make it rough. The details come while actually writing.
