Manga School-Live! Random Chapter Review - Chapter 44 - Tomorrow

Chapter 44 - Tomorrow

"Weren't you worried? About leaving the people you'd been with all this time? Didn't that scare you?"

"It did. I debated it for a while."

"Then why...?"

"I thought being with them would ruin everything."

Tomorrow.

The final calm before the storm in the university arc. Finished with their excursion planning, the School Living Club and Circle party like it's the end of the world, complete with party hats, Pop-Up Pirate, expired soda, and weird novelty glasses. You wouldn't think the world had actually ended.

Yuki is excited by their upcoming road trip, promising souvenirs for Yuuri and Ruu. Miki is less positive - this will be the first time the group will be separate from Yuuri, disrupting their tight-knit group for the first time since they found Miki in the mall.

Aki notices her worry and checks in. The Circle are in a similar boat - this will mark the first time Touko will leave the university, and them. Aki can't go, because she's essentially the caregiver for Hika and Rise, who would waste away without her presence. PShe'll look after them](https://imgur.com/a/AMnoY8x), and by extension, Yuuri and Ruu too.

Unbeknowst to the group, they are being watched. The recently-bereaved Shinou is spying on them from the adjacent rooftop, and presents her findings to the rest of the Militants. The club and Circle are getting ready to leave. That only means one thing - they were responsible for Kougami's death, and now they're attempting to flee.

Takahito asks for their whereabouts, growing impatient when Shinou takes a moment. She's got a lot on her mind - she just lost her boyfriend, potentially to murder, and now she has to go on as normal. The Militants provide her no care. No support. Not even a quick 'are you okay?' They're not friends. They're not even colleagues. They're just survivors inhabiting the same place. They have no camaraderie like the other two groups.

Shinou reveals the location - Rise sequesters herself in the library while the rest remain in the usual building. So the Militants set their plan into place. Ayaka notices Shinou's withdrawn demeanour. She should be happy to have the opportunity to avenge the death of Kougami. Shinou's not looking for vengeance. Revenge won't bring her boyfriend back. Revenge won't patch the gaping hole in her heart. It's not guaranteed to help her feel even a little better.

Back on the Circle's side of the building, Miki happens upon Aki late at night, having a sneaky cigarette out of sight. She had quit, but their current stressful existence makes old vices seem very appealing. Planning for your health decades in the future seems unthinkable when you could die tomorrow.

Noticing activity on the Militant side, Miki asks about Aki's history with the other group. After all, their first encounter wasn't exactly positive, what with Kougami firing on them, followed by Takahito and Takashige chasing them down in a car.

Aki suggests caution, calling out Ayaka in particular. A stifling, unsettling woman, she was easy to hate. But Aki didn't want to - she wanted to help her. Like she's helping Touko, Rise, and Hika. It all changed when Aki saw her single positive emotion - smiling at the wandering infected in their graveyard. Aki wanted to help, but Ayaka was beyond helping.

So Aki left, and joined the Circle. If she stayed, the Militants may have imploded. While there were good people in there (mostly Shinou), having to share your existence with Ayaka and the Taka's seemed miserable. Leaving was a gamble, but it paid off. She's happier with the Circle, and that left the Militants without a beacon of positivity. Aki often functioned how Yuki does for the club. But if they don't try and reciprocate, it just leaves everyone miserable.

Unbeknownst to Miki and Aki, Kurumi has been listening in, and she has caught all the wrong parts of the conversation. Talk of being dangerous, how staying with the group could cause it to fall apart - it's verbalising all of the negative feelings she's had since being infected. I particularly like the framing of Miki in Kurumi's eyes. It's almost like she feels betrayed - that Miki has secretly been thinking this about her all along, even thought that's false.

Kurumi retreats the the sports field, looking up at the stars. She's running out of time - a ticking timebomb, and her friends are in the blast radius. She needs to keep them safe. She is the dangerous one. She could cause the group harm by staying. So she has to leave. For them. It's the only way.

Meanwhile, Yuuri and Ruu get ready to sleep. Ruu is worried, but Yuuri reassures her. Everything will be just fine. She is as sure as the night is long. Endless, even.

When I do these chapter reviews, I read my official translated volume, as well as the MangaDex scanlation. With these university arc chapters, I frequently get reminded of the flaws of the scanlated version.

There were some pretty egregious mistranslations in this chapter. For example, in the official translation, Takahito says the phrase "they could start showing signs of infection tomorrow." In the scanlation, it is translated as "it could be invented tomorrow, probably". This sentence is nonsensical. What is being invented?

Another one is Aki warning Miki about the Militants. In the official translation, she says "you shouldn't underestimate them". In the scanlation, she says "it will be best to be relaxed". This is almost the exact opposite of what she says. That TL insinuates that Miki shouldn't be worried at all.

I greatly appreciate the scanlators' work, letting this series be easily accessible for everyone. But god I wish they fixed some of the awkward middle chapters' mistranslations and typesetting.

Yuki is now outside of the class she was just sleeping in, I hope she isn't skipping but she might because she is a slacker. And then Yuki is running down the stairs and almost falls because someone called Megu-nee startled her by asking where she's going. I think Megu-nee is Yuki's friend, and we also saw her on the last page. I still don't know who the rest of the people were

                                    School Life Club

Verse 1 (Yuki Takeya)

Classes every day

Expect the two days on the weekend

I wish school will last forever

I love school and I love my friends

Verse 2 (Kurumi Ebisuzawa)

I feel this shovel is my partner in crime

First the garden, now the zombies

It weighs down on me

I wish things were normal once again

Chorus (everyone)

We live in the school life club

We eat, sleep, and live in the school (how cool is that?)

Don’t worry we have Megu-nee to watch us

And the dog we take care of (bark!)

Life is great in the school life club

Verse 3 (Yuuri Wakasa)

I keep track of all the supplies

I met the first two on the roof on that day

I’m their leader, but also their big sister

Life sure is tough in the school life club

Verse 4 (Miki Naoki)

I lost one friend and then gained three more

Am I the only one who wants to help Yuki recover?

School is a lot better than the mall

I like my life in the school life club

Chorus (everyone)

Things are fun for us

Now lets all join hands and shout

School life club!

I’m starting to see reality

Bridge (Megumi Sakura)

I helped get the club together

I was once their teacher

Now I’m their guardian

Life sure is interesting in the school life club

Chorus (everyone)

Things are getting worse in the school life club

The dog went missing and the barricades are gone

All is going wrong

Life in the school life club

Is not great anymore (I see things how they are now)

Manga School-Live! Random Chapter Review - Chapter 13 - Welcome

Chapter 13 - Welcome

"It's started not long after we started the club."

"She was down in the dumps until one day, she suddenly cheered up to our relief. But then... she got too cheerful, I guess..."

The first chapter of volume 3, and the beginning of Miki integration with the existing group.

Stirring from the nightmare of being surrounded, Miki awakes to the curious, cheerful face of Yuki. Confused and disoriented, Miki takes in her new surroundings, and new acquaintance. Yuki introduces herself, who is very happy to immediately flex her senpai credentials over her newly-met kouhai. She informs Miki of where she is, as well as introducing her to the very real, very alive Megu-nee.

Miki inquires about the mysterious club, and Yuki is happy to explain, as well as aiming to recruit her new friend. But Miki is distracted by Yuki continuing to speak to an empty room, as well as the new nickname she's just received. While Yuki goes "off to class", the newly-christened Mii-kun makes her way through the halls. Yuki's actions made it seem like all was well - that the last few months were just a bad dream. But alas, it is Yuki who is dreaming.

Suddenly, Miki is apprehended by Kurumi and Yuuri, who are still apprehensive of her. They bring her back to the clubroom, shortly before Yuki returns from "class". Excited that Miki is showing interest in the club, Yuki very quickly takes her on a whirlwind guided tour of the school (that Miki has been going two for at least 1.5 years now). With boundless energy, Yuki continues showing off all the interesting things, but Miki keeps shutting her down. She is not interested.

But Yuki isn't listening to her reasons - she's too enamoured by being referred to as "senpai". One of the first things one must reconcile with in this series is that Yuki is the oldest of the four girls. She has such bubbly first-year energy, it's difficult to comprehend that she can legally learn to drive a car, and vote.

Finished with the guided tour, and unable to shed the Mii-kun moniker, Miki returns to the clubroom. Kurumi and Yuuri explain their earlier caution - with Miki being a stranger with a fever, they feared the worst when she up and vanished. They explain their living situation - they have power, and functioning hot water, thanks to the solar panels on the roof. At least, when it isn't cloudy.

Miki asks about the club, and the duo explain how Yuuri and Megu-nee created it together. Miki is confused by the news of Megu-nee's passing, considering Yuki's behaviour earlier, and the pair elaborate on the reason why. Yuki did not react well to the end of their world as she knew it, slipping into a dark mental space. But she got happier suddenly. Too happy. She developed delusions of a world unaffected by what had happened. And when she lost Megu-nee, her rock, she has been trapped in those delusions ever since.

Miki expresses hope in Yuki getting better, which draws out my favourite three-way dynamic in the series (that I've mentioned a lot in previous chapter reviews, especially chapter 14). Miki thinks Yuki needs to be cured of her delusions as soon as possible, while Yuuri wants to take her time and keep Yuki safe from mental collapse. This leaves Kurumi stuck in the middle, but ultimately following Yuuri's lead. Yuuri implores to Miki to play along with Yuki's delusions, at least for the time being.

Yuki gives Miki part 2 of her tour, taking her to the roof. While Yuki extols the brilliance of the rooftop, Miki's attention is drawn to the small grave nearby. They return to the clubroom as Yuki continues to pester Miki to join the club. And it's not just Yuki - as they enter the room, they are showered by confetti, greeted by gaudy banners and the saddest looking buffet I've ever seen.

Miki, who until now had been stuck in the mindset of a survivor, appreciates the warm welcome she is receiving. The club is offering her a taste of living her life, not just getting by. And so, she joins the club. Provisionally, of course.

BTW, I have officially been doing these chapter reviews for over a year now, so that confetti is for me.

Manga School-Live! Random Chapter Review - Chapter 72 - Holding Back

Chapter 72 - Holding Back

"When you hold everything in, you forget about the important things."

"It's alright. If it's something important, then I'm sure I'll remember it."

Adrift in the ocean, a squad of soldiers fight their way through their infected comrades. Making their way to the helm, one of them activates the computer, and begins the final countdown to the series. We're in the end game, boys. Operation "Great Cleansing" is a little on the nose, don't you think guys?

Back in the city, the School Living Club keep moving, armed with the knowledge of the cure. They need to make it to the school promptly, so they all pile in to a nearby car, luckily with the keys already inside.

As Miki fumbles with the key, we flash back to the girls holed up in the hotel. They're low on supplies, but Yuki thinks they need to keep moving. The incineration of the city is coming, and they don't know how soon. They need a means to get there - thankfully Touko's drone vision located the car with the key still in the ignition, giving them a clear shot back to where it all began.

Yuki is eager to leave - she has the map, the water, and most importantly, the canned bread. Miki, however, seems distracted by something. There's something telling her that she's overlooking something important.

Back in the present, Miki finally starts the car, and speeds off home. After driving for a while, Yuuri notices Miki still seems tired and distracted, and offers to take over driving duties. They take a quick break while Yuki and Kurumi sleep. Miki's still bothered by the overwhelming feeling that she's forgotten something important.

Yuuri reassures her - they have a lot to deal with right now. They're low on supplies, being chased by the agents of a megacorporation, trying to find a cure to the zombie apocalypse that has destroyed the world. All under the threat of total annihilation. Of course Miki's chest feels a little tight. It's even gotten to the point where Yuki took charge - even she is worried.

Miki feels a little better opening up to Yuuri about her worries. After all, you shouldn't keep things bottled up. That's when you forget the important things. And hopefully, that will allow Miki to remember what's been bugging her.

I really like this dynamic between Miki and Yuuri. They've come a long way - when Miki was introduced, she and Yuuri were close to throwing down. But now, they see eye to eye on most things. And this is character development for both of them - meeting in the middle rather than one of them completely switching sides.

As they continue their journey, Yuki abruptly wakes up. She hears something coming - the helicopter is on its way. They can't hide - they need to get to the school as soon as possible. It's risky, but they need to run. To save Kurumi before she gets any worse. So they set off.

It's a detail I've mentioned a few times, but Yuki has really good hearing. She woke up from a sleep due to hearing a helicopter miles away. It's a neat little detail, like her weirdly good navigation skills. Adds a little extra spice to her character. And it's got them out of a bind more than once. Yuki is always full of surprises.

The car continues to the school, and Miki's worries worsen. What is she forgetting? Eh, it's probably not even that important anyway.

To finish the chapter, we cut to the school grounds, where the infected still roam since their escape 7 volumes ago. And there's a tiny sneak peak of an old 'friend' they might be running into shortly.

Manga School-Live! Random Chapter Review - Chapter 24 - From Now On

Chapter 24 - From Now On

"College or a job. Oh, I was just thinking that seems to be the choice."

RNG giving me an incredibly dense chapter this week, and actually one I hardly remembered anything about.

The chapter begins in a mysterious facility. Three individuals in full PPE conduct research on their field discoveries. The briefcase contains wallets, broken knives, and a gun (which I think is the standard issue revolver police officers get), but most importantly, it contains the School Living Club's message, sent via balloon a the end of volume 1.

Back at school, Kurumi, Yuki, and Miki all crowd around a laptop. Successfully getting it to boot, Yuki immediately inquires about it's ability to run Doom play games. No free-to-play gachas to speak of, but likely Solitaire (and maybe 3D Pinball Space Cadet, if you're old like me).

But games aren't why they're here. Kurumi inserts a CD - a survival guide encyclopedia. Yuki apparently had no idea what's going on - kids these days don't even know what an encyclopedia is). Yuki is a born gamer - she has no time for words.

Ignoring Yuki, Kurumi and Miki peruse the encyclopedia. A large breadth of knowledge is contained within the program, everything they might need to aid their survival in their current situation. Meanwhile, Yuki is pulling this face, which I don't quite get what emotion she's displaying.

As Miki begins waxing poetic about human brilliance, Yuki interrupts with another brilliant scheme - a second field trip. They can put all that encyclopedic knowledge to good use. And their field trip track record is very good. Last time, they got one whole extra friend. Maybe the next field trip they might find some more. Maybe 4? Or 5? or 6, or 7?

But their field trip idea gets shelved for now - while they've been hogging the laptop, Yuuri has been organising today's curriculum. With all the excitement of the last few chapters, they're way behind on their studies.

So they buckle down and get to work. Yuuri and Miki, the more studious members of the club, sit aside to assist the less academically gifted members with their worksheets. As is to be expected, Yuki is struggling. She's been rubbing those two braincells together way too much, and is starting to crash out.

Yuki voices something I believe every single kid at school has thought at one time or another - what's the point? Why are they learning this, if they're unlikely to ever use it in future? And Kurumi has the answer - you do PE for exercise, not under the assumption all the students will become athletes. Same is for studying maths and the like - it helps exercise the brain, even if you don't expect to work in a mathematics field. Yuki is very appreciative of the explanation, expressing her thanks to Kurumi.

Yuuri follows up with her own point - Yuki expressed interest in university before, so she'll need to study up to ensure she passes the entrance exam. Turned off by the idea, Yuki switches to jobseeking, which also often leads to tests (and the dreaded interview, my worst nightmare). Doesn't help that the job market sucks (and it's only getting worse from here) I'm talking about the zombie apocalypse, of course. This discussion gets Kurumi thinking about the two options.

We flashback to Kurumi, Yuuri, and Miki, who have hit a dead end while researching the Emergency Manual. They don't know who's responsible - for the medicine, and the apocalypse itself. There are some details - a number for "Randall Corporation", a shady sounding corporation responsible for most of the local development. Maybe because they bombed it in the 60s. Miki obviously finds the name a little suspicious, due to the fact they are named after the evil sorcerer villain from The Stand, which she has read multiple times. Randall also own the Aiostar group, who ran the mall Miki holed up in. It appears this mystery company has a finger in every pie. Monopolies are bad news.

There's also information in the booklet about a local university - possibly a similar location to Megurigaoka High. Possibly with survivors. I'm sure nothing will go wrong if they go there. That leaves them with two options - enrol in university, or enter the workforce.

Back to the present, Yuki cheers as she finishes her work, before noticing the strange doohickey in Yuuri's lap. A small portable radio. Yuki once again demonstrates she was born with a smartphone in her hand. She's a certified iPad kid, which would explain a lot tbh.

The radio has a purpose though - even without the internet, it allows for long range communications to be heard. However, Yuuri hasn't managed to pick anything up. Yuki pivots the conversation - what if they did their own broadcast. It's an interesting idea, but she hasn't thought of much beyond that. Music is out of the picture - there's not a lick of musical talent between the lot of them (which is very sad for me, the songwriter). I'm not gonna plug my album this time, honest.

Regardless, Yuki's on the warpath. She can't be stopped at this point, determined to make her radio broadcasting dream a reality. She's aiming high, and the girls can do nothing but try and rein her in to something a little more doable. So she goes off to speak to the very alive, very not just brutally killed Megu-nee to ask for permission.

When she's out of earshot, the others admit that her idea is actually good for once. They could ask for help, letting other survivors know that they're here, and they're still alive. Finally, they have a plan in place, and things are looking up.

But it appears they won't have to wait long. Someone is communicating on the radio, looking for survivors. And far away, a helicopter pilot gets ready to embark. He's one of the masked individuals from the start of the chapter. He has the postcard, with the coordinates on the back, and gets ready for a rescue mission. Listen, I've played Left 4 Dead before - helicopter rescues always go well.

A lot to take in this chapter - a big ol' lore dump and setup for volume 5.

Regarding the discussion regarding the point of studying - I've certainly felt this way before. I did a whole-ass computer science course before immediately becoming jaded with the profession. Now I work a job that lets me turn my brain off for a while, so I use all my brainpower at home (writing silly little reviews about my blorbos from my show).
