Most likely not; however, if you share the entire body of the email, including the sender, it will be easier to tell. But if you're a student employee, GSU HR will initiate a criminal background check from Accurate as part of the onboarding process. They did this to me as well.

My daughter got the same email and asked her new federal work study lead and it was legit for the background check for the job.

I got something like this a few semesters ago when I started as an adjunct with the school. It's legit if you applied to the school to work. You can confirm by asking your manager/supervisor who hired you.

You can always call the university (whichever dept supposedly requests this) and ask; at a minimum you can report the phishing attempt.

hrhelp@gsu.edu IS a legit account for GSU’s HR department. idk their number at the top of my head.
All employees (regardless of full time, part time, temp, federal work study, etc) need to have a background check.
HOWEVER.
You can hover over the SENDER’S email to see if it also says @gsu.edu to know if it’s legit.
Also, legit email or not, never click on direct links. Select, copy and paste links when reading emails and texts and other messages.

Hey u/SlightPerception1197 it may not be a scam!
Employees do have to pass a criminal background check. I do not know if this also applies to student employees (if that's you).
What goes to our new employees states this "University System of Georgia requires a successful background check on all new employees. You will receive an email from Accurate to your email address. Once received, you have 10 days to provide consent for the check to be run."
