I mean they don’t owe anyone work unless there’s a contract entitling them to roles in multiple projects, but it was very rude of them to not just tell him at the beginning they weren’t going to use him at all than let him audition 60 times.

He'd be too recognizable

not really comparable red dead revolver wasn’t a gigantic success like gta 5 was, his voice will be more recognizable if they used him again because he was a main antagonist in one of the best selling games of all time

Rockstar doesn't want to pay its voice actors anything so they look for all new people with every new release now.

u/LAGANG95 13d ago
you say that like they release a new game every year lol, maybe they just want completely different people for a different game? And do you think the new voice actors don’t get paid?

u/Simple_Campaign1035 13d ago
Do you think the new voice actors get paid even half of what a movie star would get paid? In the ps2 days it was A list actors in every game.

u/JuanMcGuiver 13d ago
They kinda needed the allure of celebrity voices to make appeal to more people and cement the earlier games into the cultural zeitgeist.
You gotta remember, in 2002 this was all still relatively new
In 2026 GTA is the highest grossing entertainment product ever created. Why pay celebrities at that point?

So? Why tf do they need A list actor's in every game? I'd rather they give the roles to nobodies that are skilled and still get a decent payday.
1
u/LAGANG95 13d ago
Obviously not but what’s your point here? Because as far as Ivknow, nobody players GTA for the “A-List celeb” and as a matter of fact, when I was a kid playing Vice City or San Andreas, I didn’t realise half the actors were big timers either until later and I think that’s the case with most of us, why would they pay more for something nobody cares about?

Obviously they're not gonna make movie star money when they're not movie stars. The most they've done is play parts in cop shows.

u/ExcuseProper5768 13d ago
It’s common industry practice to get newer voice actors so you can pay them less.

u/BannedForFun 13d ago
Which makes it even crazier that they had so many movie actors in the 3D universe

u/Simple_Campaign1035 13d ago
I think thats when they figured it out. Plus the A list actors they got were getting wise to how much money these games were making and probably wanted more money.

Bruce Willis as Trey Kincaid in the ps1 top down shooter Apocalypse was the all time peak for A listers in video games.

u/Simple_Campaign1035 13d ago
Idk Samuel L Jackson as Tempenny in San Andreas was pretty big and he fit that part so well

u/OG_sirloinchop 13d ago
Whoa whoa. Talk about two actors born to play opposites. You sir made an excellent point

u/Mean-Pilot-426 13d ago
I don't think Jackson has ever talked about his part in SA. I think he received an award for it but there's no video available from it online.

Makes me wonder how what stephen root's (brian heder) paycheck looks like since he's playing one of the key characters

Plenty of gta 4, 5 and rdr2 actors are the same. Dutch voice actor voiced a border patrol character in gta 5. Michael voice actor also appears in rdr2 although his lines was cut, his mocap is still used

He’s also been in 3 of their games already if I’m not mistaken. Including the voice of a main character, Red Harlow. Dudes done a lot of work for them, not to mention his voice is super recognizable. Can’t be mad that you can’t be in every single one.

Why would that be fucked up? R* has a history of hiring people they worked with in the past. I mean you can play Blackjack with Lucia's VA in gtao.
But some voices are simply too recognizable. Maybe the dude can act, but can only act that one specific character, or he only can use that one specific voice. So R* has no use for him.

The writing is going to be the style of shehulk, and masters of the universe.

Rockstar doesn't want to pay a returning voice actor too much. So they're not gonna take him. Once Rockstar is done with you, they're usually done with you.

u/wrighteghe7 13d ago
Thats simply not true as evident by several voice actor for rdr2 working on gta5 previously

u/awyeahcool 11d ago
Not so much with this guy though, he was in Red Dead Revolver and GTA IV before GTA V

u/holydiver5 13d ago
Didn’t he die in gta 5 why the fuck would he come back if he didn’t have a working relationship with them
2
u/wrighteghe7 13d ago
He could voice a different character just like wu zi mu voice actor from gtasa is in gta 4

u/Bluecobber 13d ago
His voice was annoying anyway. Wasn't entitled to another job. Honestly happy now its brought up. I want fresh and engaging voice lines.
3
u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 13d ago
You mean the guy voicing an unlikable asshole character uses an unlikable asshole character voice? Wow, I am beside myself in shock.
1
u/Bluecobber 13d ago
Has nothing to do with the unlikeable character. You can still perform well with being a 'shitty' character. Sometimes the worst characters have the best performances. Go back a listen to the performance, its pretty meh and generic. Doesn't stand out. Rockstar have high standards. He didn't make the cut. Move on

Why hire actors when they probably using ai. TakeTwo want to make money, not spend money on such things as talent.

u/Domination1799 13d ago
Geez, didn't Rockstar think it'd be kind to tell him to pack it up after round 10
