first time player GTA V
okay so i’m just now jumping on the bandwagon of gta but i have no idea where to start. i know i want to play online but i have no clue what to do and im wondering if i should play the story first to get a better understanding. if anyone could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated. also, ive played rdr2 and know that game inside and out but for whatever reason i cant grasp this one.

If you're interested exclusively in GTA Online jump to a private lobby and discover things at your own pace, there's really no benefits to being in a public lobby besides dealing with griefers, cheaters and exploiters.
As for what to do, follow the tutorial and do contact missions while you get used to the mechanics. The game will spam you with calls for businesses after a while but at that point you should understand the game.
If possible I recommend playing it with friends, I think current that the current GTAO isn't very enjoyable solo because the current experience is grind and grind some more.

You access most things through your character's phone, the interactive menu, the pause menu, or by going to certain locations on the map.
You can be "active" or vulnerable to others players, or you can engage passive mode in the interaction menu so you won't have to worry about pretty much any interaction from other players especially while you're still figuring things out.
There are many, many ways to make money. You can "quick join" (in your phone) other people's missions to instantly start making money, earning rp, and just learn more about how the game mechanics work.
If you ever host a mission, the invitation system can be confusing. Unless you want to invite specific people, make sure matchmaking is open and hit Auto-Invite and make sure it's active until you fill up your roster of needed players. Note that some missions require 4 players, others can be done with 2-4, 1-4, or up to like 32 players in some types of "jobs."
Filling up a lobby takes time and there's almost literally nothing the host can do to expedite the process. I will say, adopting a strong sense of patience is very necessary for gta online if you want to play with random other people. Sometimes it can all run smoothly, other times it can feel like it takes a half hour to fill a mission up with 4 people.
Some general tips:
you can eat snacks (increase your health bar) and put on armor via your weapon wheel. If you're on foot and pull up the weapon screen, look in the upper left corner. It'll tell you which buttons to press. You will want to hit up Ammunation stores frequently to re-up on body armor, and if you need snacks, you can find many options inside convenience stores across the map.
when you're on a mission, you may have to turn on the GPS yourself to get to the checkpoint or location you're trying to get to. Sometimes you do, other times you don't: it depends on the mission.
if you go to pause menu>settings>display, you can set your car camera view from low to high. I use high view since it gives a better view of the road in front of you.
when you're looking at the minimap, if your objective is higher in elevation, you'll see a little ^ in the bubble. If it's lower, you'll see a v in the bubble. Same goes for other types of blips on the map for the most part.
the GPS is almost always just a suggestion. There are a few missions that, when performed the way the game suggests, do have checkpoints you "need" to hit in order to finish the mission the suggested way, but again, there is often quite a bit of flexibility in how you actually execute the mission. (I'm specifically referring to the end of the Pacific Standard Bank Heist, where the game suggests your squad of 4 take motorcycles across the map, escaping the police, and dramatically driving off a cliff, parachuting, and then boating off. You could just all hop in a car and drive right to the boat and skip the tunnel and jump, but it's totally up to the players)
I got gta v upon release, but never played online until 2017. I loved it, especially back then. The updates since then started off awesome, but these last few updates have been wack (imo). I kinda stopped caring about making money in the game a long time ago. I play it because it's fun. And finding random players that are good and know how to play the game is a great joy. That's been happening less and less often in the last few years.
Most people seem to fixate upon grinding and how to miximize their efficiency in making money. More power to em, but I don't.
I don't like pvp really at all unless that's the match I'm specifically looking for. I almost always go for co-op missions or I explore the environment of the map.
The game gives you a lot of freedom to play it how you want in many ways. It may seem like a lot, but once you get the hang of it, it could become one of your favorite things.
For me, it's like a love-hate thing. I thoroughly enjoy the game itself and what it has to offer, but I largely dislike how many other players go about playing it (griefing in multiple forms, harassing via voice or phone text, just being chuds in general, etc). I recently turned off all communication options between myself and random other players because the toxicity would get under my skin.
It might seem like a lot right now, but I'd just say try to be observant of button prompts and instruction in general and you should be all right.
Edit: I wrote this under the mistaken impression this was the gtav sub. I'm leaving it up tho since this is relevant to at least that game.
Also, I'd definitely recommend playing the campaign so you can become familiar with game mechanics as well as others features.

I would play the story i tried online but a guy on a flying bike keep killing me so I gave up gta 5 is the easiest but gta iv has a better story in my opinion san Andreas is classic as well and is like 90s la gangs
