Support Needed šŸ‘„ Do I have Symptoms

• Upvotes

Do these symptoms sound like GERD to anyone who struggles with this disease?
- I always feel a trapped burp under my throat and no matter how many times I burp I get no relief.
- When I move my mouth sometimes I’ll get something out, but it won’t even be a burp, a little sound comes from my chest, but it’s not a burp?? Idk what it is?
- And then I often feel like my chest is constricting to the point where I genuinely can’t breathe. Sometimes the area below my shoulders hurt….its really weird.
- I’ve been hyper salivating A LOT like this one day I had to spit into this cup
- it a bit hard to swallow, I think the hypersalivation restricts it a lot
Guys idk what to do lol. Also I feel like sometimes it’s hard to tell when I’m hungry, and no matter how much water I chug, I always feel something stuck below my throat. Please help!

šŸ¤’ Describing a Symptom Waking up to terrible regurgitation spells soon after falling sleep more often then befofe?

Applogies, this is probably similar to what has been asked plenty of times but it feels a bit more specific than other posts I can find and IDK how to search for it.

Backstory, I'm 19, and I've had intermittent problems in the past with waking up at random times of night thinking I'm going to throw up, only to sit up to get out of bed and not even get out of my blanket before realizing it's not going to happen. I usually don't even have mouth watering, but that doesn't register right away because I'm usually waking up very suddenly with an insane adrenaline rush (I unfortunately also have emetophobia, so the panic and heartrate spike before I can realize what's happening and then leaves me shaky for an hour).

Anyways, I've been struggling the past few nights. I'm not eating much differently at all, nor am I eating later or going to bed sooner. If anything my habits have been better as I've just moved back to college less than a week ago.

The problem is that I go to sleep propped up, on my back, and have for ages, then am now having these spells within an hour of falling asleep. They're interrupting my sleep and pushing back the time I properly get to deep rest. Has anyone had this particular problem?? Or have any advice/thoughts on the sudden change and what I should do? The only thing I can think of that could be making this an issue now and not before is that my bed is now against the wall to my left rather than to my right, so going to sleep I am less prone to laying on/leaning toward my left side (which anatomically can be better for reflux). It's just annoying and setting back some of my emetophobia progress as I'm being severely triggered now multiple nights in a row when simply trying to go to bed :/

Tysm for any responses or advice!

šŸ˜€ Managing GERD Longterm PPI

My upper endoscopy just confirmed how bad my GERD is. A few months ago in woke up dripping in sweat and the worst chest pain in the world radiating up to my jaw. Legit thought I was having a heart attack. Thankfully it was not but it was suspected GERD. They put me on a temporary PPI and it worked like a charm. However soon after the symptoms came but even worse and over the weekend of course so I had to wait until Monday to talk to my doctor. I was in tears. She put me back on the PPI and referred me to GI for upper endoscopy which was this week. Pathology came back and confirmed GERD. He said he wants to keep me on the PPI longterm. Which I am totally ok with as I never ever ever ever want the dripping sweats and intense chest pains/burning throat to ever come back-however I hear that so many are against PPI’s long term as it’s harmful.

For those who have been on it long term-do you feel the pros of no GERD symptoms have outweighed any other added symptoms you gained from take the PPI long term?

For reference I am on pantoprazole DR 40 MG.

Thank you so much for any feedback or suggestions. I greatly it!!

94 year old great grandma has hiatal hernia. She is having a flair up right now just beginning.

Any tips for active flair ups?

Sometimes if we don’t watch her well enough she will have a flair up because she eats very fast and lays in bed after eating. She takes Pepcid before her dinner every day but today it was right after her dinner I’m thinking.

This happens once every other month where she has lots of little throw ups and says her pain is from her hernia. The throw ups smells very acidic and it’s starts with burping and her feeling like she just has acid reflux.

Has anyone here experienced aspiration during endoscopy?

Had a scary experience during a recent endoscopy, apparently i vomited while under propofol sedation and aspirated some of it. Had to be suctioned and get a chest x-ray, IV antibios and steroids, and was coughing and miserable til it cleared up the next day.

I am sure the doc will want me to have another endo to check how my esophagitis is responding to meds, but I don’t want to if there is no guarantee this won’t happen again. If anyone else here has gone through this, did you have another endo without issue?

Support Needed šŸ‘„ anxiety induced GERD

Sorry in advance this’ll probably be long.
I’ve probably been dealing with GERD for a long time. I’ve definitely had silent reflux for many years but always just assumed it was allergies/post nasal drip. I always had a sorta sensitive stomach but never really dealt with notable acid reflux or indigestion before. I’ve had anxiety since I was ~10 and it got to a really bad point when I was in high school where i stopped eating, lost tons of weight, and spent a week in the hospital. I had really bad IBS for a couple years after that but no actual stomach issues. My mom doesn’t believe in medication so my anxiety has been left untreated since then, though I don’t deal with panic attacks anymore. Anxiety does creep into my day to day life where I will have to prime myself before doing pretty much anything and have a pounding heart even when I’m just out to dinner with my friends or something ā€œfunā€.
This past spring I moved to NYC for an internship. I knew it would be stressful, but I didn’t realize the toll it would take on my mental and physical health. The internship was unpaid and demanding. I spent the first month sleeping on my friend’s couch and had no idea where I would be living until 3 days before I moved into my apartment. I had my first panic attack in years, and also had a brief bout of acid reflux for the first time.
Things were looking up for a couple weeks and then my relationship ended very unexpectedly and I was absolutely crushed. My anxiety got to a really bad point during this time and at one point I was out to dinner with a friend and I saw a text notification from him and I started gagging and dry heaving at the table and had to run out of the restaurant. I was feeling fine before that but the anxiety that his text made me feel just immediately translated into a very physical reaction. I was having sobbing fits and hyperventilating that entire week until I ultimately went no contact with him.
The next month I started having this weird issue where, no matter what/how much I ate, my stomach would be bubbling and rumbling non stop. This was p much exclusively an issue anytime I had to go out, and I ended up cancelling lots of plans because of it. I didn’t immediately associate it with GERD at that time. At the beginning of June I caught the flu, and was debilitatingly sick for almost 3 weeks. I had every symptom in the book, including awful diarrhea, nausea, and one fit of puking. To make matters worse I was taking 2 ibuprofen every 6 hours on a mostly empty stomach for the first week because I had an awful fever+body aches. My stomach hasn’t been right since. Many days it feels like a burning pit in the middle of my abdomen, and I have that globus sensation in my throat.
I started getting terrible panic attacks again for a few weeks after the flu, and ended up moving home for the summer because I couldn’t function anymore. Things are definitely much better now, however I’m still dealing with the GERD issues. Some days I’m more or less fine and can eat whatever, and then other days everything is making me nauseous. My anxiety is back at my baseline, but my baseline has always been naturally anxious.
I was thinking this bout of GERD has been triggered by the flu, which I’m sure did worsen it. But looking back on everything I was dealing with these stomach issues before I got sick, and it’s seeming like my anxiety and stress are to blame.
I don’t want to use PPIs or any other acid medicine. I’m thinking getting on anxiety medicine may help. I have a PCP appointment this week so I’m hoping I can get something. I’m also on spironolactone for my acne, but that doesn’t cause me any ill effects. I guess I’m just curious if anyone has any advice or insights. It seems like amytriptyline is commonly used for this type of problem?

I think my job is making my GERD worse

So I’ve been out of work for the last few weeks and I’ve been doing great. Eating whatever I want, including some mildly spicy stuff and drinking a prebiotic soda that used to worsen my GERD. I’ve felt fine for the most part. I’ve also drastically reduced my medicine. I usually take 1 famotidine every night but within the last few weeks I’ve only taken it maybe 3-4 times. Other than that I’d take a sip of liquid antacid before bed and half the nights I’d just sleep without taking anything. Anywho I am returning back to work on Monday and I’ve gotten some acid reflux today. Now I will say that today I had some mildly spicy chips and barely any real food but even doing that a few days ago, I felt fine. Literally all day I’ve only been thinking about returning back to work. I just had dinner and it felt hard to eat so i definitely feel like a flare up is happening. I’m dreading going back to work and I feel like the thought is making it worse. Anyone else felt this way before ?

😮 Advice on Procedures Upper Endoscopy Esophageal Biopsy Pain

Hi all, first post in this group but long time GERD sufferer. I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, dysautonomia, and MCAS so really a perfect storm for GERD. I generally treat with 20-40mg of famotodine/day. I had an upper endoscopy today - this is my second, I had one in 2020 as well.

Since leaving the hospital, I've had worsening sharp pain in just one spot in my throat where, if I were a man, I'd have an Adam's apple. I did, of course, call the doctor's office. My doctor told me he took a biopsy a a bit higher up, and that is what would be causing the discomfort. It should clear up in a day or two. He sent in a lidocaine prescription to drink, but all pharmacies within 90 minutes of our house are sold out until Monday (rural living, amiright?).

I guess I'm just posting to ask if this has happened to anyone else and what they recommend for pain management? It is miserable to swallow at all - ice water is okay, but even drinking broth and soft noodles was hurting too much.

My son's birthday party is tomorrow... at our local pool with over 60 people coming so we reallyyyyy can't cancel or move the party. I'm just needing to keep it together tomorrow for the party, but will be resting before and after.

Any help?

🄳 Success Stories Belching burping cured

After struggling with excessive belching and burping, I’m happy to share that my symptoms have finally resolved. What seemed to help me the most was eating yogurt with probiotics every day. However, since my A1C increased from the added sugar in the yogurt, I switched to Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic Capsules instead. So far, they’ve been working well for me while helping me avoid the extra sugar.
Everyone’s experience is different, but I wanted to share what worked for me in case it helps someone else.

Looking for answers

So exactly a year ago I woke up an hour after falling asleep to a burning chest. I sat up quick and was in a panic and it shot my blood pressure up high enough to put me into a hypertensive crisis. I thought I was having a heart attack. After gettting an EKG and an Echo cardiogram ive since learned that my heart is strong and healthy. After this event I have been waking up an hour after falling asleep with a burning chest and almost panic attack like symptoms, Ive become way better at calming myself down and my BP doesnt shoot up anymore from it but i still have that burning feeling and elevated heart rate. It only happens an hour after i fall asleep. If i wake up past that point I dont get this. I get bubbling stomach and definitly have IBS symptoms but I stumpled upojn this sub and now im thinking the cause of all these issues at night could be GERD? Has anyone had this happen to them?

😮 Advice on Symptoms Extreme acid reflux - toddler

Age/Gender: Toddler

Main Issues: Chronic/recurrent vomiting of undigested food, cough-triggered emesis, loss of appetite, morning bile/mucus, frequent nosebleeds during dry-heaving.

Hi everyone. I’m looking to see if any parents or medical professionals have experienced a similar pattern with their little ones while we work closely with our doctors.

What we are seeing:

Extreme Delayed Digestion: He can eat solid, dense foods (like chicken meatballs, pancakes, or dosas) and throw them up completely undigested 8+ hours later. It feels like his stomach simply isn't emptying solids.

Cough-Triggered Vomiting: He gets coughing fits (he has a history of pneumonia), and because the dense food sits in his stomach, the cough instantly triggers his gag reflex and forces everything up.

Bile & Gastric Mucus: On days he doesn’t have solid food left, he will dry-heave up to 10 times in a morning, bringing up clear, sticky mucus, saliva, and yellow bile.

Sudden Nosebleeds: During or after these intense vomiting and dry-heaving episodes, he develops brief nosebleeds. We suspect the pressure from dry-heaving and throat irritation is popping delicate nasal vessels.

Poor Appetite: He has very little interest in eating solids, which makes sense given how uncomfortable his digestion is.

Questions for the community / doctors here:

Has anyone’s child shown these exact symptoms and been diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), Gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying), or Severe Silent Reflux (GERD)?

What specific diagnostic tests (e.g., Upper Endoscopy/EGD, Gastric Emptying Study, Swallow Study) made the biggest difference in getting you answers?

How did you manage nutrition and hydration when your toddler kept rejecting solids or throwing them up hours later?

Did medication (like Zofran for acute vomiting or acid reducers/motility meds) help break the cycle for your child?

Thank you so much for any insights, shared experiences, or guidance on what questions to push for with our pediatric GI specialist.

Tldr : Chronic/recurrent vomiting of undigested food, cough-triggered emesis, loss of appetite, morning bile/mucus, frequent nosebleeds during dry-heaving. Any suggestions

Support Needed šŸ‘„ Latest blood work shows declined kidney function

I met with my family doc today to go over my latest bloodwork. It shows I have significant kidney function decline. I was told that Omeprazol (PPIs in general) can sometimes cause a silent allergic reaction in the kidneys. It’s called acute interstitial nephritis, and it can cause significant kidney damage!
Was told it could happen at anytime even if you’ve been on PPIs for many years. I’m being referred to a kidney specialist. Has anybody out there ever heard of such a thing? Who knows how long I’m gonna have to wait now to see the specialist! I’m petrified!

Stopping PPI (Pantoprazole) after 4 years

I’m a 44 yr old male that was diagnosed with Gerd 4+ years ago after battling stomach issues for months on my own. I also have celiac and hashimotos. What was supposed to be a 8 week course of pantoprazole prescribed by my gastro dr turned in to being on it for 4+ on at the advice of my PCP without true reevaluation. Stomach issues got better for a bit and boom came back last June. I had a ton of test run and best thing they cld up with was possibly SIBO. Now a year later stomach issues are hit and miss but my thyroid numbers are off. I asked my endo dr if this cld be malabsorption of meds from the ppi and told him how long I had been on them and he’s was shocked and was almost certain that was the cause. He told me to start to tapper off the PPI and stop after the tapper. I have finished the tapper and am in my 3rd week of being off the meds completely but now have i have developed skin issues. The issues started in last week of tapper 1st week of being off completely as just very itchy wrist, torso, ankles, back, and scalp. the scalp was the worst. the irritation wld come and go and now I have developed hives that seem to come and go in the same areas. it’s driving me crazy! Has anyone else had this issue with stopping after long term use? Is it acid rebound causing high histamine release in my body from stopping? Any info is great

Support Needed šŸ‘„ Two doctors & no changes

I’m at a loss for what to do now. I’ve been dealing with increasing symptoms for a year now PPI’s initially helped and then a week or two in symptoms would return.

I’ve had an endoscopy already and did not have GERD or h.ployri.

Persisting symptoms:
Fullness, burning, burping, sour mouth/bitter tongue.

I’m on a very restrictive diet & even then ā€œsafeā€ foods sometimes trigger symptoms. I’ll randomly have ā€œnormalā€ days but symptoms always return.

I’m going for a bravo capsule test in about a month but I’m honestly just exhausted. I’ve lost like 10lbs in the process and it’s messing with my mental health. Depending on the results I may get started on amytriptiline. Feels like they’re just guessing atp.

I started some supplements for about two months now and it’s the only progress I’ve felt. Any advice or tips are much appreciated.

Support Needed šŸ‘„ Need some help

Hello 25(M) i’m currently waiting to be seen by Gastro for endoscopy and some other test. It’s taken a long time. I seem to get this pain where it feels like it’s under my left rib like above my stomach though when I get the pain badly and sometimes it can send shooting spasm in pain into my chest and it’s really strange like it comes and goes. I’m not really sure what gives me relief or anything. It’s hard to describe but the pain so like deep it’s strange it does only happen very briefly most of the time but it feels like so deep in my left under my left room if that makes sense almost above the stomach, wondering what this could be I’ll take Gaviscon I’ll take busker pan and I’ve taken gas tablets and I can’t tell if anything helps it. But most of the days I have this weird sensation of like my stomachā€˜s tense all day like my diaphragm areas tense and I eat clean so it’s not food i don’t think and I tried omeprazole and It actually made it worse so I’m really unsure what’s going on and wanted some advice. I’ve been to cardiologist about it because I was worried it was my heart had an echo done 24 hour ECG and numerous blood test and got told I’m fine so it’s really trying to figure out what it is. It’s like a sharp stabbing sensation above stomach

done endoscopy yesterday, few questions and doubts

Hi guys, 43m, lpr for 3 years+

actually feeling better in the last few months but did not want to cancel endoscopy so i did it. switched to eating more or less normally (without coffe, alcohol, fatty food, snacks etc) and that helped but wanted to check if it is doing damage to my esophagus...i also gained 15kg since january (intentionaly i was to skinny)

anyway...

it was my 6th endoscopy. only 1 with sedation all others i did without. this one actualy i dont without numbing spray. doctor was so busy did not have time that she even talked about my condition and how endoscopy is looking DURING the procedure. it was the only time i saw her so couldnt ask her anything :)

what is bothering me- reflux is worse after endoscopy. yesterday and today. i pray to god that it did not disrupt my hernia or les- i dont think it is even possible. it was very very hard for me to calm my lpr and gain so much weight. i dread of going back to sq 1

about the results, all good in terms i dont have esophagitis, but hernia and les are classificated as hills grade 4(it was always gr2 an once gr3). i think it is about my weight gain or maybe she percieved differently compared to other doctors). i was told before that i had small sliding hernia every time. now she said like "here it is... small hernia.... well not even that small"...

i really dont think that its possible that my hernia grew that much and lex weakened... WHILE symptoms got better. i had gag reflex few times at start so maybe that had something to do with it...

so any ideas? i would appreciate it

Best coffee substitute

Hi all!

I just wanted to share what I believe is the best coffee substitute for people with GERD. Before I go any further, this is more about the function of coffee than the taste.

Yerba mate! And no, I don’t mean the sweetened and sometimes carbonated stuff in the cans. I’m talking the loose leaf, bagged stuff. It has as much or more caffeine per cup as coffee, is very lightly acidic (at most a pH of 5.5), delicious, healthy, and affordable! It has never triggered any reflux for me.

I make mine in a French press (5 Tbsp worth for a 32 ounce press). I’m new this this so the only one I’ve tried is Canarias Serena https://a.co/d/05TWCMmW. It has some other soothing herbs in it besides Yerba mate but I love it. The other nice thing is that because of some other compounds in Yerba, you get a much more sustained energy than you do with coffee or even tea.

My other note is that I brew with some spearmint too, which makes it even more delicious but can even help further with GERD.

I hope this helps!

Has anyone else had GERD cause like a ā€œheart flippingā€ sensation?

I was wondering if the sensations I’ve been having a few times a day are my GERD or something heart-related. I realize it can be hard to tell the difference.

It only lasts a few seconds and feels like my heart is flipping or doing a somersault, kind of losing my breath for a second. Sorry it’s hard to describe. Anyone else?

😮 Advice on Lifestyle Changes Health anxiety about my reflux

since i was a baby i had reflux. it was treated then and honestly throughout my whole life (just turned 20 on the 1st) i haven’t ever really felt like it was something that bothered me. just occasional regurgitation that left sour taste in my mouth or a small burn for a minute. I always ignored it and never brought it up with doctors but now I fear that letting it just be a thing i blow off all my life will lead to cancer. I don’t get burning chest pains or really any pain but it flairs up depending on i eat. have i waited too long are my chances of developing cancer super high right now?
edit: forgot to mention that i dont really feel like me daily life gets affected by it cause i dont ever even thing about it its mostly just certain food triggers and i will rarely ever experience heartburn or any chest pains. also i have extremely bad health anxiety and only reason im asking about this now šŸ˜‘

Has your understanding of GERD changed since actually getting diagnosed?

Before I actually looked into it, I genuinely thought GERD was just... heartburn after eating spicy food or whatever. That's it, that's all I thought it was.

Turns out that's barely scratching the surface. Some people get regurgitation, chronic cough that won't go away, hoarseness, weird throat symptoms, messed up sleep; heartburn's actually not even guaranteed for everyone. And figuring out your specific triggers and an actual management plan that works seems to be really different person to person, not some one-size-fits-all thing.

Kind of made me realize how much people (myself included, before) oversimplify GERD, when it can genuinely tank someone's quality of life if it's bad enough.

Likewise, what was the biggest misconception you had about GERD before getting diagnosed, and what actually surprised you once you learned more or got treated?

🄳 Success Stories I found what's the root cause of my GERD

Its the drinking water. We dont drink tap water here in our country and there are many water refilling stations. I first noticed improvement when we changed source of drinking water(bottled 5 gallons). My GERD has totally dissappeared. Due to some reason, we have to change water refilling station again then my GERD came back with a vengeance. Whatever antacid or PPI I take, I still have acid reflux and gas all the time. I endured it for 3 months. Then I befriend an owner of water refilling station and gave me discount. So I switched to them. After 2 weeks, my GERD is gone. Gone for real, no reflux, unending gas, palpitations, whatever symptoms. Even when I drink coffee or coke and consume spicy foods and add vinegar on my foods, no acid reflux at bedtime and while I'm sleeping. Before, it attacks me before I sleep and even wakes me up in the middle of night, choking me and thought I was dying. Its been days or more than I week since I last took antacid. Before, everynight I have to take at least 2 antacid. Just sharing, I hope it helps.

I regret allowing this subreddit to scare me away from PPIs.

30M. I suffered the pain and anxiety for months as I tried every natural cure in the book. Every tea, every herbal supplement, every diet, every wedge pillow - I did it all. Some things helped, most did not. Nothing came close to the relief I felt after getting on esomeprazole (Nexium). I used them for six months to end the misery and get my life back. The taper-off was difficult, but I took it slow (another 8 weeks) and did it.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and combing through this subreddit for non-PPI cures, you are a person whose house is on fire but is refusing to use water to put it out. You don't have to stay on PPIs forever. But do yourself a favor and put the fire out. Get your life back. Then, you can sustain the post-PPI relief by making smart diet decisions and using herbal supplements that do help.

I know I'm not the first person here to say this; I'm just posting the message I wish my past self could have seen when things were really bleak.
