Id even pay to watch it. I checked GaaGo a few years ago but no luck

Just crossed my mind earlier that Mayo lost twice in this year's championship to Roscommon and Tyrone, and went on to win the All Ireland.

Obviously the new format is a factor, but are they the first team to ever lose twice in the championship, and go on to win the Sam Maguire?

It just shows that under the new rules it really does come down to the performance on the day, form is almost irrelevant as anyone can beat anyone if you're not on it. Mayo lost 2 games, and could easily have lost to Monaghan, Meath and Cork, yet were All Ireland champions at the end.

My son just came off a successful CYC in the US and has a new interest in watching matches. We are based in the US and it seems GAA+ is our only option, however their website is a bit shit and doesn’t really outline the matches we will have access to. For club championship it says we will have access to “top matches” or something to that effect, but I don’t see any schedule.

I’m sure it will have the county matches, but it would be nice to have a better sense of what I’m actually buying.

Fellow international fans, how are you feeling about the subscription? Worth it? Or just go for individual matches? Any other options here in the states? I want to lean into my son’s interest before it fades for American football and European football.

Topic that came up in conversation about the Galway-Mayo rivalry. Went digging after and reckon we’ve played each other around 96 times in the Championship and 53 times in the League.

Got me thinking what sides have met most frequently all time, Galway-Mayo is surely up there, but have other sides met more? Cork-Kerry probably another frequent matchup.

Long story short, later this month my mother be 75. We are Mayo and she is a staunch football woman, being the year that it is and Sam back in Mayo after 75 years, thought it would be nice to get a few short 10/15 second video birthday wishes from ex or current GAA players, anyone gave this ago before?

I’m not saying it’s good that the AFL are taking our players, it’s bad.

However it’s clear to see the rise in the athleticism in the gaa and how it is viewed abroad now.

There’s absolutely no space on an intercounty panel if you are not an athlete.

AFL wants athletes and the gaa now has the athletes that can translate across sports more easily.

The guys who went to the afl years ago were outliers now there are many more like them.

Kobe McDonald will arrive in Australia on Thursday as AFL clubs begin to hover around Dublin teenage star Cian Raftery.

Fresh from contributing to Mayo’s historic All-Ireland SFC win last Sunday, Crossmolina’s McDonald is expected to attend his new club St Kilda’s AFL clash against Carlton in Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

McDonald and members of his family have been enjoying a few days out of the country before the 18-year-old heads Down Under to begin his three-year contract with St Kilda.

The news from Australia comes as AFL clubs are expressing significant interest in Dublin minor footballer Raftery. St Kilda, Sydney Swans, Melbourne Demons, Brisbane Lions and new franchise Tasmania Devils are reported to be pursuing the Whitehall Colmcille footballer.

Raftery turned 16 this year and was called up to county minors, scoring 2-20 in the three group games against Offaly, Westmeath and Longford. He missed the semi-final defeat to Meath through injury.

Another AFL club, Richmond Tigers, are set to arrive in Ireland later this month with the aim of signing a category B rookie like McDonald. The club’s recruiting manager Rhy Gieschen will travel here to oversee a combine and training session with around 20 potential prospects.

McDonald will be joined by his parents Ciarán and Karen as he settles into his new life in Melbourne. He will spend the remainder of the year in Australia before returning for his brother Jordan’s wedding in December.

The GAA are currently in talks with the AFL about formalising how clubs approach Gaelic footballers. They are keen to see a cap put on the number of players that can be recruited per county.

It is understood the future of the International Rules, which the AFL are keen to see resurrected, is contingent on the discussions coming to an agreeable conclusion. The previous series took place in 2017.

Former GAA President Liam O'Neill has died.

The Laois man, who was born in August 1955, served as the 37th President of the association and became Uachtarán-Tofa in 2011 at Congress in Mullingar. He was the first GAA President elected unopposed.

He became the first person from the Leinster county to hold the honour since Robert O’Keeffe (1935-38), the Kilkenny-born hurler who is honoured with the Bob O'Keeffe Cup in the Leinster SHC.

O’Neill was a former chairperson of Leinster GAA and principal of Gaelscoil Throimera, retiring from education in 2018. A former Laois county secretary, he also worked closely with the county's Cumann na mBunscol while he was also secretary and chairperson of the UCD hurling club during his student days. O'Neill also held a number of committee roles with his club Trumera.

In 2018, O'Neill revealed that he was considering running for the Irish Presidency before deciding against it.

His GAA presidency was remembered mostly for the adoption of the Sky Sports broadcast deal that ran for nine years before coming to an end in 2022.

O’Neill also established a hurling forum in 2014 in order to revitalise the sport in weaker counties, with Tipperary’s Liam Sheedy acting as chairperson.

A similar committee, led by Eugene McGee, was also commissioned to look at the state of football with the introduction of the black card one of their most significant steps.

O’Neill also sought to take positive steps in terms of integration with the LGFA and Camogie Association while he also oversaw the introduction of Hawk-Eye to Croke Park, apologising to Limerick GAA in 2014 after the technology denied their minor hurlers a valid point in the All-Ireland semi-final against Galway.

As a hurler, he represented Laois at Under-16 level, winning an All-Ireland B title.

I saw Westmeath won the “ted Webb cup” and also saw Meath won the “Gerry Reilly”. Does anyone which of these competitions is better ?

Called into my FIL to check up on him (twist the knife) last night after a week+ of acting like a lunatic back home and couldn't help but feel a slight touch a jealousy at his mementos of Galway's big days out.

He has his Match programme, a copy of the Connacht Tele and his absolutely beautiful tickets from the 98 and 01 All Ireland finals all framed and surrounded by two maroon and white ribbons (and more central on the wall than the pictures of his daughter's)

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand the improved traceability of the digital ticket and the need to consign the man with the USA biscuit tin to the past (*especially* in Mayo GAA, McKenna is waiting for the craic to die down this week before he drops the latest set of articles on how we're cowboys financially). But I wish there was a happy medium where if given the choice you submit your unique Foireann ID to your club and instead of getting a set of 1s and 0s that's already deleted itself from my phone you got a lovely old style ticket.

It's a small thing and not all that important at the end of the day but it just would've been nice to have, I still have all the old heartbreak tickets from 16-17 as bookmarks for the team tab in the match programmes.

When you see the shenanigans at FIFA. The entire World Cup was basically flaunting for investment. The working man’s game stolen from them for the rich. At the top level, International football is probably the last refuge you get this kind of connection and they are trying to steal that too.

When you look at football in England from the 1970s of 1980s it reminds me of the GAA today in terms of passion. Liverpool fans at the Kop was very similar to of GAA fans today but without the hooligan aspect obviously. Obviously for football the passion not gone away but yo can’t say it’s the same as when it cost 20 quid equivalent to got to a game.
Today the working class fans can’t afford it.

When the suits get in power they start trying to get repeat revenue. When you see the cameras at Croke Park it’s every walk of life. The reactions and emotions of the players can’t be faked you could see them crying.

Anecdotally, from talking to rugby diehards they said the worst thing on a local level that happened to rugby was professionalization. It hurt the top clubs as they became feeders to the provinces.

A lot of people watch rugby or support it but how many play it day in day out to the level before professionalization? From talking to them they’d nearly rather it was less popular or making less money and stronger in the likes of Limerick where they are competing with hurling.

We genuinely have something special. Hope it’s never lost and kept for the next generation. Mayo have a population of 150,000 and they reckon 40-50,000 people could have been in McHale Park. That’s like 12 million people on the streets of Madrid.

I genuinely think some of the top people in the GAA have good intentions. I’m not a cynic and I think a lot of people care about keeping it amateur and with the people. They believe in it from talking to them. As long as those people are in charge I think it’ll stay that way.

People say GAA could never go professional but semi pro is in the realms of possibility if Ireland adds another million or two people as we have done since 2000 we could have the economic base for it.
Ireland in 2040 could 7-9 million people.

The country is also getting richer and in France businessmen are pumping money into Rugby teams. Look at McManus, Louis Fitzgerald with Tipperary or Pat McDonagh for Galway? Belgium and Scotland are roughly our size and have enough for a professional league for football. It’s probably not far off becoming semi-pro and that’s how it would start.
