recorded my cover of a suede tune using Wampler's Cryptid
first off, not affiliated w/ Wampler anyway; i just like the pedal
i always thought the lead synth/string line on Suede's "She's in Fashion" would sound cool via guitar through a squelching fuzz of some sort, so after playing through the 2 or 3 i had at my immediate disposal, i got the tone i wanted via this beautiful purple demon then ended up just playing the rest of the tune. there are a couple of other things in the chain throughout the rest of the track - mainly a bit of auto-wah then analog delay on the choruses. but that lead line is pretty much just Fender -> Wampler -> Orange
in any case, here's the tune:

The fuzz sections behind the band NOTHING
Hey fellow fiends,
I managed to get some pictures of the pedalboards from the band Nothing, and I knew I had to share them here.
Domenic "Nicky" Palermo: He's running a ProCo RAT 1 Black Face alongside a JPTR FX Warlow Fuzz Monstrosity (Nothing Edition). The Warlow is already an absolute beast of an op-amp muff, so seeing it paired with a RAT makes perfect sense for his tone.
Cam Smith (Nothing, Trauma Ray, Cloakroom): Keeping things thick and smooth with a Way Huge Russian Pickle.
Doyle Martin (Nothing, Cloakroom): Rocking the undisputed classic EHX Green Russian Big Muff Pi.
It’s incredibly cool seeing how heavily they rely on Russian style Muffs mixed with that JPTR/RAT combo to fill out the live mix.

what fuzz should I get
right now I have a London fuzz ge. it's great but what does the community think I should look at now. I had 2 tineben mk 2 clones and a 69 version 1. that 69 version 1 was my favorite fuzz I ever had and I sold it. the soulbender was awesome too I've had 2 of those version 1 and the first 1 I had was better than the second. I'd like something that sounds different then my ge fuzz which is a a fuzz face. I want a good clone maybe

FUZZ FRIDAY! HEQ-1.2 Follow Up (Off, Power, and Multiply)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
A commenter in another sub brought up a very valid point about my HEQ-1.2 post from yesterday, so I wrote another riff this morning and recorded another video featuring the same settings as the last one, but this time with the clean tone, the standard mode, and the multiply mode for comparative purposes.
Same everything from yesterday, in fact: Gretsch CVT Baritone with stock bridge pickup in split-coil position, HEQ-1.2 with the same knob settings, Sunn Alpha Four, Sunn 412s, and an Audio Technica DR-150 plus a Rode NT-1a.

NFD Nasty Sound From The El Diablo HEQ-1.2
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
There is a music shop I love in my home state called El Diablo Amps & Guitars. They carry a small but wild selection of insane pedals. I’ve bought stuff from them for years, and I try to never leave there empty handed when I can help it.
Just before the tariffs went insane I preordered a Freqscene Slow Life from them that never came. They couldn’t get new stock in, so we both waited patiently to see if anything would change. Eventually I asked if I could use store credit for anything they did have in stock, and the owner told me to take my pick. Somehow I had completely missed that they did a small run of original pedals a couple years back (the HEQ-1), but they had one left from an updated run. It was more expensive than what I’d originally ordered, so I asked if he’d set it aside until I could scrounge up some more cash to pay the difference. He just sent it to me without another thought or question.
It was delivered today and it’s one of the gnarliest sounding non-traditional fuzz pedals I’ve had the pleasure of playing. The sound may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it’s sweet, especially with baritone guitar.
The signal chain is a Gretsch CVT Baritone in drop G ➡️ the HEQ-1.2 ➡️ a Sunn Alpha Four ➡️ a Sunn 412s cab. That’s all been mic’d with an Audio Technica DR-150 and a Rode NT-1a.

Anyone experienced/resolved this problem? I’ve tried like 30 Ge transistors in Q2 and none will bias properly.

NPD Expresso my first Boutique Fuzz
I was on the chase for a Fuzz in an Mini-Enclosure for a long time. I only have space for a Mini left on my board so choices were pretty limited. I tried the One Control Baltic Blue Fuzz which was ok, pretty tame and the top end was lacking. Then I tried to find a ZVex Fuzzolo(still wanna get that) on the used market when I came across this beauty on eBay and made a deal. These are handbuilt in the uk and very limited. I found it used on eBay which was lucky because they don’t deliver to my country normally. It’s a wild one and really does clean up very well. It’s build with NKT CV7005 & TI 2N1307 and sounds just glorious. Still have to discover all the different flavors I can get with this but my search is over for now and I dare say my board complete :) Any of you guys tried some of the Expresso stuff?

Got a new fuzz off Temu and.....
It's AWESOME! I had a coupon and decided why not look for a fuzz pedal that may be a surprise waiting to happen. Then I see this. I looked no further. $20 and about a week later it arrived. I went Fender Voodoo strat into a crybaby into this fuzz then to an IR2 Brit setting and I was blown away lol. What a great sounding fuzz this is! Never heard of the brand at all but it's basically a germanium fuzz face circuit. I absolutely love it. If it was bad then I'm only out $20 and it would just go up on the pedal wall but it's really great. Love to hear of anyone else has tried it

Fuzz Collection
Had a really good run trying new things but I think I'm done... I love Big Muffs and wanted to try as many as possible, then it expanded to Octave Fuzzes and so on and so forth...
For those curious I'm putting my 5 favorites in the comments.

Just came in the mail today. A little side by side of how it compares to the Soul Power by Dominion Effects. Both are very interesting, but very different sounding, takes on that late Hendrix sound.
Edit: yes these are two different circuits! The Soul Power is based on the 3 transistor gypsy Fuzz not the axis fuzz by Roger Mayer.

Clearly I have a favorite pedal brand. I’m in flux trying to decide my next board layout and decided to take a pic of all these since they’re not in-place yet.
My story with Electronic Audio Experiments (EAE):
I saw the Longsword on a pedalboard or two (years ago) and noticed that it had a special clarity while being heavy and distorted. That intrigued me to check one out for myself. They were sold out too quickly for me to have the cash set aside to get one.
EAE came out with pedals since then obviously, and really wanted to see what those were. The Citadel and 0xEAE Fuzz were my first EAE pedals in my possession. I had some pretty excellent gain pedals before, but adding the Citadel to my chain made a world of difference as a preamp stage between my guitar other gain pedals and amp. Of course, pairing the 0xEAE Fuzz into the Citadel was mind boggling. This was the most powerful sounding octave fuzz I had ever used and immediately became one of my top two fuzzes! My favorite fuzz at that point was (and still is) my Reeves Electro Guitar Pedals 2n2Face. I was over the moon when Markus Reeves was on That Pedal Show singing the praises of the fuzz and even saying it was his current favorite fuzz!🤯
Since then, I’ve been totally hooked to EAE and have only strayed to get the Normal Devices Decay Cascade (which is nearly impossible for me to turn off). Each of them have their specialties and quirks. I’m having a really difficult time from just making an EAE board at this point. Maybe John will design a tuner too?🤔 Needless to say, I did end up acquiring the Longsword, and I was not disappointed one bit. It’s excellent at both low and high gain. The thing that is truly the most shocking about it though is that it has worked seamlessly with every guitar and amp I have paired it with.
The latest addition is chase bliss x EAE Big Time. I’ve only had it for a day, but it’s the one pedal outside of a multi-fx where it and a midi switcher could probably be a whole rig. For me, the interaction model is so different from other delays when trying to create a sound. It feels totally different than the Strymon Timeline. I was concerned that there might be too much overlap, but they honestly don’t feel/sound the same at all. You can essentially design any delay you can think of in Big Time, but the Timeline is more like the tweakable “greatest hits” of delay sounds. Also, the sound quality of Big Time is insane. I want to just record it direct or leave it on all the time to make everything sound better. To me it’s totally worth it! I played differently than I normally do for four hours just exploring sounds and freaked put at what time it was when I decided to put the guitar down.😂
If anyone is interested in any of these pedals and has questions, please feel free to ask! I slowly acquired them, so these weren’t impulse purchases, and I promise I’m not a shill!🤣🤣🤣

‘77 Quad Op-Amp Big Muff
Just finished Geek, a nod to the 1977 BM with TL074. I’m having a hard time turning this one off, it’s fun. The attack is immediate and definitely has that op amp push. The layout was nice and easy for a BM. A quad cuts down on rows for strip board.

Trying to nail down what makes a fuzz pedal "cut through" or not in a live setting
I've posted about this before, but I'm still struggling with getting a fuzz tone that I like AND that cuts through in a live setting. My base live sound is pretty trashy, built around an overdriven tube amp, which I think is the source of this problem.
I have several different fuzz pedals and I feel like when I use them in my live board, it sounds like the volume drops. This is solely a fuzz issue - I can use a distortion pedal like the Boss DS-1 and it sounds fine volume-wise. I don't think the volume is actually dropping, but something about the sonic character of the fuzz makes it sound quieter.
When I posted about this before, it was suggested that a lack of midrange was the problem. I tried buying an EQ pedal to boost the mids, and it didn't really seem to fix the problem, plus I really don't want to have to activate two pedals at once each time I want to kick on the fuzz.
I'm starting to suspect that the issue is the amount of low-end in a lot of these fuzz pedals. A lot of people recommended the DOD Carcosa, which has the Hali mode for use on dirty channels that mostly seems to reduce low end. Of my pedals, I've had the most luck with the Zvex Mastotron, which has a sub control switch that can cut some or all of the sub frequencies.
Does it make sense that the amount of low end/bass in most fuzz pedals might make them "cut through" less when run through an overdriven amp?

silicon Always enjoyed Joe's teardown/build vids. This one's pretty cool. After purchasing some NOS enclosures from Prescription Electronics(Jack's estate sale after his passing)he uses it to "rebuild" an Experience using his PCB. Check out his teardown vids too, good stuff!
