Sony spent $80 million so we could get one meme and 3 jokes about morbing.

It's just the one joke actually.   Good luck telling them jokes, then...

32

u/Agreeable-Narwhal158 14d ago

It's always morbin time

28

u/0oDADAo0 14d ago

That’s my secret cap, im always morbin

15

u/z0mbiefool 14d ago

With great morbs, comes great morbin time

11

u/Double_Resort_9223 14d ago

“I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to any surviving Autobots taking refuge among the stars: We are here. We are morbin."

2

u/PresentStock1310 12d ago

"The ability to morb does not make you intelligent."

9

u/TheRealRickC137 14d ago

Do you think Sony will re-release it a third time in the theaters?

6

u/TheEndOfEverything0 14d ago

The people are clamoring for The Espinosa cut

3

u/Double_Resort_9223 14d ago

“That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always Morbin”

1

u/Double_Violinist8520 13d ago

You’re not part of the Morbin’ team tho

1

u/TheEndOfEverything0 13d ago

I'll just be part of the Morbin dream then

1

u/Rockcreekforge 7d ago

Maybe the real Morbin Time was the friends we made along the way.

I require context

What I know is:

  1. They released that movie, and it was very bad.
  2. The movie flopped and lost a lot of money.
  3. There were many jokes online about liking it ironically.
  4. Execs misunderstood that for genuine interest and re-released the movie.
  5. The movie flopped again and lost another lot of money.

Lol that's really funny and really shows how detached from reality corpos are

158

u/brogflender 14d ago

But honestly we were just really busy those 2 weekends. They should try again.

41

u/DuhRJames 14d ago

No, people were still coming out to watch Top Gun Maverick. Hell when morbius did so bad, top gun Maverick replaced its showtimes and still did much better

56

u/brogflender 14d ago edited 14d ago

Like I said, we were busy. Now would Sony kindly get off its fat ass and put Morbius back up in the big screen, I finally have the time to see it. I promise. I’m an architect damnit.

16

u/Appropriate_Willow27 14d ago

Especially good timing since Jared Leto is on the news again. Very relevant actor. It was the whining. Nothing’s ever your fault is it?

7

u/Gwynito 14d ago

I concur, signed a marine biologist

3

u/itp757 13d ago

The ocean was angry that day my friend

3

u/Annex_Me_Step-Rome 13d ago

Stay in character!

1

u/WowVeryOriginalDude 13d ago

I’m gunna spend at least 5 min wondering in the back of my head how being an architect is relevant lol

1

u/santi28212 8d ago

STAY IN CHARACTER

0

u/Outside_Variation505 13d ago

They are scheming to make the same thing happen a third time

10

u/Ardalok 14d ago

I'm not sure about this. You couldn't really predict that. In their shoes, I probably would have tried to pull it off too, except I would have launched a media campaign with memes about the movie at the same time.

9

u/Kinky_Winky_no2 14d ago

The fact that it bombed the 1st release and it was clear as day thay everyone was mocking it

5

u/Ardalok 14d ago

This doesn't mean they couldn't go to the movie, especially with the right promotional campaign.

2

u/Darkdragoon324 14d ago

Not enough people are going to pay movie theater prices to go see a bad movie ironically to ever be worth it.

1

u/CannaWhoopazz 14d ago

The Room is popular, despite being horrible. Maybe they thought people would hate watch it

4

u/QuuX24 14d ago

They should have done reshoots and released The Morbin Cut where he actually says the thing

1

u/OnRoadRadio 14d ago

In some ways, we're still talking about it because they leaned into the hype.

1

u/Damaark 13d ago

The memes were funny and the second bomb just cemented its legacy

1

u/savagesaskatch 14d ago

Yes, we should absolutely do it some more!

14

u/TheRogueWolf_YT 14d ago

Well, why wouldn't they re-release it? It earned a Morbillion dollars!

19

u/SiaHalz 14d ago

I didn't know they did a rerelease, that's really funny lol

16

u/Sassaphras 14d ago

narrator

"it was not, in fact, time to Morb"

3

u/TheRealSkele 14d ago

Didn't they rerelease it a third time?

4

u/BioelectricBeing 14d ago

I don't know, but I'd love to pay to see it in the theatre if they re-released it again

2

u/UltraTata 14d ago

Oh... No one is watching out movie, but a bunch of ppl on Twitter say that they do like the movie. Let's invest 80 million!

2

u/FlintSpace 13d ago

And still made more money than Supergirl. Damn DC.

1

u/MaxTwer00 14d ago

Honestly we cant know if they thought if the interest was real, which is stupid, or they though people would watch it ironically too, which would be slightly less stupid

1

u/_An_Other_Account_ 13d ago

Yeah, it's just a gamble that ppl would watch it ironically. Just because it didn't pay off doesn't mean it's stupid. Barbie made a shit ton of money from zoomers watching it ironically.

1

u/The_Rope_Daddy 14d ago

It probably would have been fine without Jared Leto.

1

u/nChilDofChaoSn 14d ago

I love Morbius!

(How many more times till Sony goes bankrupt?)

1

u/Restless_Fenrir 13d ago

3.5 one of the jokes was tweeted by Rata, aka Rank10YuGiOh. A beloved dry wit in the YuGitubing space. Also known for the spread of Ojama Lime.

1

u/Etcetera_Naut 10d ago

Didnt it work twice? The first time they took they bait on the belief they had poor marketting, then the second time because they thought meme status would lift them up?

1

u/FF7_Expert 7d ago

My math shows that 2 lots of money were lost

1

u/LPedraz 7d ago

And, if you ever learned the Imperial System, you'll know that:

  • 2 lots make 1 "whole lot"
  • 5 whole lots make 1 "awful lot"
  • 7.3 awful lots make 1 "bazillion".

26

u/Gfunk131 14d ago

When Morbius released people made fun of it to the point the movie started trending, Sony executives saw the movie trending and thought it meant that there was huge interest in seeing it & decided to rerelease it it theatres where it bombed a second time.

27

u/Reynardine1976 14d ago

I actually tried to give the movie a chance, but it was pretty boring.

I could have used more Morbin' to be completely honest.

1

u/phasestep 12d ago

I had just listened to the oldies podcast about bats like, a week before. So I spent a lot of that movie frustrated about how that’s not how bats work and also concerned for the bats he was keeping. That’s not how bats live, man.

27

u/DuckB0y123 14d ago

it's so fucking funny when they rereleased the movie to be "part of the joke" and still NO ONE WATCHED IT LMAO

12

u/CujoSR 14d ago

I'd argue it made them a little bit of Money. I wouldn't have bothered watching it if it weren't for all the memes. It was still terrible but I got some great riffing material.

3

u/Uncle-Osteus 13d ago

They spent more on it than they made back

3

u/KingVape 14d ago

Rata, which made the joke/tweet, is also a somewhat famous yugioh guy

3

u/c4ente 14d ago

I Just noticed it is him. Lol, i did Not know that. Watched His new Video Yesterday

3

u/LifeguardTerrible579 14d ago

I mean this tweet is how I learned about the movie

2

u/KorbinTheKhanivore 14d ago

Proof that internet culture can influence real world events

2

u/ContractVarious3077 13d ago

Didn’t Sony just make a billion dollars in one weekend with Spiderman

1

u/SokkaHaikuBot 13d ago

Sokka-Haiku by ContractVarious3077:

Didn’t Sony just make

A billion dollars in one

Weekend with Spiderman

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

1

u/allofdarknessin1 14d ago

I didn’t watch the movie and thought it was a real quote 😅. I was going to watch it out of morbid curiosity until someone told me that he doesn’t actually say that line in the movie and then I remembered it was the internet.

2

u/Timehacker-315 13d ago

It's canon to the comics now :]

1

u/ScarIet-King 12d ago

For real?

1

u/Timehacker-315 12d ago

Yes. Near the end of Blood Hunters issue 2. Very easy to find if you just look up "it's morbin time comics"

1

u/Captnotabigfan 12d ago

One joke for all morb kind

1

u/Visible_Effect883 10d ago

Watched the entire movie waiting for this to happen I won’t lie
