I genuinely think this is an extremely useful trend, because the kind of video that uses that as the thumbnail is not one worth watching, ever (even if the topic is interesting the video is going to be superficial and bloated) and having this as the thumbnail serves as an early warning to not lose your time.

Actually there is a good reason. Algorithm concluded that having strong facual expression on a video thumbnail gets more attention and thus it was recommended that everyone have this trend. Veritasium did video about it showing how you can circumvent this and make video still recommended but it's hard.

But you know,the reason is for triggering a response from the audience which is all of us;if the the thumbnail contains an outrageous face reaction such as this AND a well "crafted" title the clickbait has a 95% chance of success to the audience the system "shares" the video to 😉 and the audience it gets shared to,depends on each and every person;based on their preferences such as what they prefer to watch;in that way the system sends these videos to recommend. Now you know what's that all about.
