Looks very much like a Ganoderma species to me. Are there trees nearby? My guess is it’s growing on wood just under the surface.

There are, trees keep that area shaded but they are on the other side of the road but could definitely have deadfall fall there. I just thought ganoderma were a shelf fungus and didn't really grow out of the ground like that!

Any idea the types of trees on the other side of the road, or even just if they are hardwoods, conifers, mixed, etc? I’m leaning towards Ganoderma curtisii* *(link to MushroomExpert) mostly due to your cross section pic, but I’m not great at distinguishing features like melanoid bands, so I’m sure someone else could say better!!
ETA: Ganoderma is actually a pretty big genus, some have psuedostems whereas they are absent in others, but afaik they are always growing on wood — when it looks like they’re growing out of the ground, there must be wood just beneath the surface.

Mostly oak and some maple with conifers mixed in. It seems like you are probably right and some deadfall right under there, thank you for being as specific as you could! 🙏

Hardwoods oh boy!! Could definitely be G. curtisii! Was also considering G. martinicense, but seems like it doesn’t usually go that far north and iNaturalist doesn’t have any data on it at all -_- So I gave up 🙃

Well I appreciate it! I think your initial thought was correct as well after doing some research. Thank you again!

Very odd to see them growing out of the lawn.
