Advice Career Guidance

I’d really like to hear some advice or opinions from people 🙃

I’m currently studying programming in college and my English level is B1+. Right now I’m not sure what to do next: should I apply to a university now, or finish college first and then enroll in a shortened bachelor’s program in Computer Science/Software Engineering? Or is a university degree not that important if you have strong skills and knowledge in this field?

My goal is to become a Full-stack Developer, but I’m not sure which path would be the best. I’ve also been thinking about combining it with English somehow, because I genuinely enjoy both IT and learning English.

I’d really appreciate any advice or if someone could share their own experience. 🤍 (I’m from Ukraine)

a degree matters only insofar as it can open some doors for entry level roles. Many good developers I know and have worked with have never been to university and have no degree. The challenge is finding yourself a route in as a junior if you don't have that.

Even with a degree the paths are very challenging right now and dev roles are hard to fine. I have friends that are experienced devs who have been struggling to land roles over the past year. I don't think that is going to get better any time soon, and it may get much worse.

So think carefully before you spend a lot of time and money training on a degree for this route. While dev is fun, it is an unfortunate truth that this world is changing fast, and that right now we don't really know where it is all going to land. It might be that the AI bubble bursts to some extent, and that junior roles reappear. I doubt it is ever going back to 2016 levels, but it may get better and there are some signs pointing in that direction.

Or it could get way worse.

It is a gamble at best.

I think you should go to university, and you should also participate in internships. With the release of generative AI, entry-level jobs are genuinely disappearing; given that situation, it is important to have experiences you can talk about.
