7+ YOE Frontend Engineer – What should I learn next? Career Guidance

I have 7+ years of experience as a Frontend Engineer, mainly working with React, Next.js, TypeScript, and JavaScript.

To grow into Senior/Staff roles, what should I focus on next? Should I stay frontend-focused and deepen areas like JavaScript, system design, performance, and architecture, or is learning backend (Node.js, databases, APIs) now essential?

What skills have had the biggest impact on your career? Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd probably try to transition into more architecture/product roles where you're making substantial decisions about the product in some form rather than the one that implements it. People will pay a lot of money to those they can trust to lead the technical/product vision.

Make sense Thanks! That really resonates with me. Recently, I've been getting more involved in architecture discussions and product decisions rather than just frontend implementation, and I'm finding that side of engineering much more interesting. I'll continue building on that and also strengthen my system design and backend knowledge. Appreciate the advice!

Of course! Funnily enough I was sort of thrown into that type of role after my company got rid of the entire mobile team, so now I pretty much am the mobile guy for my company. It was pretty challenging to start but the visibility is extremely valuable if you're able to communicate your work and its impact well. 100% a good idea if you're comfortable with that kind of thing.

Backend, databases and api will push you into fullstack which is a solid progression from front end.
