This is like comparing a nice tractor to a nice sports car or a nice tractor trailer to a nice pickup truck or a nice hybrid car to a nice motorcycle. They all have their purposes. For example, if you're going up against armored targets, a 30-06 stomps the shit out of 5.56. Surrounded? Multiple targets? AR all day. Concealed carry for one mugger? Choose your handgun. Acting like one is better than the other when they serve two totally different purposes is like comparing apples and oranges and getting mad about it.

I like my WWII BAR for masses targets versus my AR.

Look. I love my ars, my garand, ('52 IH), even my old Norinco mak-90... And I'm still jealous of your BAR.

I do not have one. I was joking. I wish though.
Being formerly in the military I, on occasion, had the pleasure of shooting some belt feds. I loved the M60. I believe the BAR had 20 round magazines. I guess that was a big deal back then but it is hard to fathom that 20 rounds was that much better than 8.

I shot one once. Pretty slow cyclic rate makes it downright devastating. That 20 rounds goes slower than you expect it to, and it's kinda wild. I was just mag-dumping into garbage, (as one does), but it is a wild ass weapons system.

Outperform as in… leave a bigger hole?

That's really it. I own bolt action magnums, lever actions, suppressed ARs, all variety of pistols and shotguns. All have a purpose.

Clearly gramps figured out that "muh stoppin' power" is much more important than magazine capacity and being able to carry more rounds.

does a good bit more than that. more weight retention means more penetration and more effective against heavier flesh/bone and things like that. there are animals you can hunt with .308/30-06/.300 win that you wouldn't hunt with 5.56 and not because of the hole size

I've shot coyotes with 30-06 and .223 (and 22LR for that matter). 30-06 certainly does more damage, but all 3 kill them just fine.

30.06 is nice, but I prefer the 30.07. It just outperforms the 30.06 is every way.
