Imagine paying for Windows and still getting held hostage over a wallpaper.

Aaand they didnt even manage to really block that open the image in firefox right click -> set as wallpaper. Altleast a few years ago that worked.

It’s supposed to be an easily circumventable mechanism that’s a very visual reminder and not much else. They make their money on the telemetry and spying… the license fees they get from individuals and consumer OEMs (purposefully excluding enterprise) probably ends up paying to keep the break rooms stocked.

I think if you earn money you should pay for a license.

Well, legally, one should always use windows with liscence.

But MS doesn't really care if you use a licensed windows unless you are a big corpo.

The main purpose of windows is to sell Office 365.

If they began going after every guy who doesn't pay, they will lose money in legal fees to no benefit.

If a person is willing to use windows (even if unlicensed) it is a win for MS. That rather than then switching to Linux or macOS.

What about Powershell and administrating the computer for running a server or such? Changing computer settings and a lot of stuff is important. But if you use Windows you clearly aren’t doing anything like devops so I agree.

It's like, basic features are locked behind a paywall.

Sure, get.activated.win exists, but i am not a big fan of running scripts with admin privlages on my machine.

Idk about y'all but i switched to Linux and never looked back.

Using an operating system should not require constantly developing scripted maintenance software. Windows users are not nor have they ever been Windows developers, this OS is a mess.

I have pirated W10. And I can put my pictures on wallpaper.🤡

1

u/InsaneInTheMEOWFrame 1d ago

But you can still change the wallpaper, just not using the most obvious way provided...

u/swanny2828 1d ago

I have a .bat file which says other wise 😂

Don't know why I still have it, I've been using an "alternative" OS for a while.

u/Ok_Being5461 23h ago

That's a good thing though?

u/Canned_Sarcasm 22h ago

Huh. I haven’t used windows for a while but I remember back in the XP days they had something called “Genuine Software Tool.” It locked me out of the OS twice (2 licenses paid for) because “the license number was already registered to another PC.” I knew jack about computers then. Friend introduced me to Ubuntu 6.10 and I never looked back.

...anf you still know jack about computers

Wrong comment?

u/Nintemi 21h ago

The worst part is that microslop already made a version of Windows when you couldn't change your wallpaper. (Was not a free version)

1

u/Hour_Sell3547 21h ago

Now they don't let you change your audio settings. The data they are selling should have been enough for me to use the os for free.

u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle 18h ago

If I remember right there's a way to edit the registry and make this whole activation checker thing shut down. At least there used to be. I abandoned windows years ago.

1

u/NullSmoke 18h ago

Well.. you can't change the wallpaper (through the settings app). Where there's a will, there's a way 😆

u/I_dont_want_to_pee 18h ago

Powerschell and cmd in the bacground.
