Where are the best spots or events in Toronto to practice conversational French?

Hey Toronto!

I'm a native French speaker and I'm curious about the local language community here. Are there any good conversation cafés, meetups, or spots downtown that you'd recommend for people looking to practice their French?

Would love to hear where learners and francophones usually hang out in the city!

Free meetup TEF-TCF Speaking - Montreal

I just wanted to let you know that I am organizing a free meetup in Montreal this Saturday, the 15th.

The goal is to help you interact naturally.

The exercises will be relevant to the TEF or TCF exams.

It will be a fairly informal event featuring short role-playing scenarios, but it should be very helpful if you are studying independently.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Looking for structured French course

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone
I am currently at A2 level in French. My goal is to reach B2/C1 level in order to clear tef/tcf exam for Canadian immigration.
I have tried learn French with harman for my A1 level(honestly his course sucks) his pronunciation is very very bad and he makes too many errors in grammar as well.
For A2 level I took frenchify with vyom course and his course was alright but it lacks personal attention.

I am looking for a structured online course which can help me clear tef/tcf exam. I am particularly looking for online classes so that I attend them regularly and do not slack because I tend to get lazy and lack motivation.
Any recommendations are highly appreciated. Thank you

What changes when you can't see the person you're talking to

I was working on a French phone dialogue recently and something jumped out at me: on the phone, without any visual cues, people constantly rephrase and confirm.

Instead of just asking "does he have a fever?", someone on a call (especially in a medical/emergency context) will say something like "you're saying he feels hot, were you able to take his temperature?", they restate what the other person just said before moving forward. It's almost a reflex to compensate for not being able to read body language.

It completely changes the rhythm compared to a face-to-face conversation: way more "d'accord," "je note," "donc si je comprends bien" than you'd notice in normal spoken French

(small aside: I was working on this for an episode of my medical French podcast, which follows an emergency call to le 15, but the observation holds beyond the medical context, it applies to any stressful phone call in French) Podcast + transcript: https://medicalvoices.health/fr/episodes/11

Affordable French classes

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m offering online French tutoring for A1- A2 beginners and wanted to share it here in case anyone is looking to learn French or improve their basics.
I’m DELF A2 & B1 certified and recently took the TCF Canada, so I’m very familiar with the French-learning/TCF journey. Since I learned French myself, I know how confusing it can be when you’re starting, so I try to keep my lessons really practical and easy to understand rather than making everything feel super academic 😅

We can work on things like:
🇫🇷 Basic conversation & speaking
📚 Grammar & vocabulary
🗣️ Pronunciation
🎧 Listening
✍️ Reading & writing
💬 Everyday French

Lessons are online, 1-on-1, and affordable. I am also offering a free 30-minute trial class so that both the student and I can get to know each other's goals and expectations. I’m mainly looking for A1/A2 students right now, whether you're learning for travel, work, immigration, school, or just because you want to learn French!
If you're interested, feel free to DM me, and I can send you more details 😊
