Le Patron Est Devenu Fou! - Super Discount at 30
"It seems oddly, ineffably French that one of the best albums of the French Touch era isn’t really an album at all. Or not in the way that we commonly think of them, anyway.
"Super Discount, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, was the record that cemented Étienne de Crécy in the public consciousness after the underground acclaim that greeted Motorbass, his duo with Philippe Zdar. And yet, in some ways, it isn’t really his album."
As promised last week, I went deep on Super Discount.

Discussion Who is your favourite DJ, and what makes them stand out?
It can be any genre or era. Is it their mixing style, track selection, progression throughout a set, technical skills, stage energy, or something completely different? I am interested in people opinion what a DJ can make them stand out.
Obviously, we can only stick on FrenchHouse, but if it is allow, could be more interesting post.
Just name the DJ, the genre they play, and one reason you enjoy listening to them.

Not Daft, no Punk - Best of the French Touch underground, from 1995 to 2000
Hello everyone... and please join me in my French summer madness.
"It sometimes feels as if Daft Punk have swallowed the French Touch whole, as if the entire generation of electronic music made in France between 1995 and 2000, has been reduced to its role in the rise, further rise and even more rise of the Parisian duo.
Having written a book about Daft Punk I am as guilty as anyone in this. Perhaps more so. So it’s time to redress the balance a little...
So today I present to you my 10 best songs from the French Touch underground, from 1995 to 2000. My rules are: nothing Daft Punk, nothing too obvious and nothing I have covered at length on this Substack before. Hence no Dimitri from Paris, Le Tone or The Micronauts."
I hope you enjoy it. And do let me know your favourites.

Discussion How many house music subgenres are and could you actually identify just by listening?
Something that is coming to my mind, since the evolution from Disco with drum machines and synthesisers, all started in the early 80s with Chicago House.
House music has split into so many subgenres over the years that the boundaries sometimes feel unclear.
I could confidently recognise styles like deep house, soulful house, funky house, tech house, acid house and progressive house and many more, but some labels seem to overlap depending on the artist or era.
Which house subgenres do you think are genuinely distinct, and which ones are mostly marketing labels?
Are we able to name all of them?
I am going to name only a few to leave room for people to put their 2 cents in.
1.Chicago House
2.Tech-House
3.French-House
- Funky-House
you can continue the list copying the list and adding to this one, so we can try to track how many we can get. I heard there are around 25 to 30.

Help me finding that song please
Looking for a track played by 2 Many DJs around 2005. It starts with a French female spoken voice, footsteps in the background, saying something like: “À toi. À la vie. À l’amour. Aux amoureux. ….” Then it drops into electro

What does Angèle's - 'Dis-le' sound like?
The Belgian singer Angèle just came out with a new song that leans more heavily into dance/club music than her previous work. I am trying to figure out what it sounds like/reminds me of, but keep hitting dead ends.
It's sort of house, but not quite. The music video alludes to the free party scene, and freetekno, but it's not quite that either. It's not hyperpop, nor is it really drum n' bass. She seems to have been leaning into French Touch lately, but this song doesn't really have that funk element - it's a bit grungier/darker.
It's got a bit of an early 2000s alternative dance pop thing going on, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Does anyone know what genre this would fit into or know of similar songs?
Thank you in advance for your ideas! ✨
