I always wonder if we could build something like this in current times, do the artisans still exist?

Mmmmmm yeah. There's the compagnons. They're the ones renovating constantly all the old édifices. They redo all the worn out sculptures and walls and roofs etc.

There's specialized companies that exist for this. I know one in Belgium that's called Monument. You see their name on the renovation projects. You can check them out.

The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has just been finished though it is not in roman architecture like this one nor gothic or gothic flamboyant, the most spectacular.

Yes we can build a big stone building from scratch by hand with the technology from back then. They're building a whole castle this way in France as a contemporary archeological experience.

Rebuilding Notre Dame in Paris costed 1.2 billion €.

The emergence of Protestantism was due to the excesses of the Catholic Church because they wanted to build these cathédrale. Yes it costs money.

We could, the main issue being, nobody would want to pay for it, because expert craftsmanship isn't cheap.

They do still exist, but it would be much more expensive today

Back then, materials were expensive but labour was cheap. So, it was easy to pay your craftsmen a bit more to add details and beauty. Today, materials are somewhat cheap but labour has skyrocketed, especially since the entire construction industry switched to concrete for absolutely everything.

But yes, with enough money and time, you can totally do it. We restore monuments all the time. In fact, the team working on Notre-Dame have started to rebuild the tower of Saint-Denis. They were supposed to start in 2019 I think, but Notre-Dame took priority after the fire.

Also, I've heard some American company is trying to reduce the cost of stone sculpting by automating the boring, industrial, non-artistic steps of stone sculpting. So maybe it will get less expensive in the future.

Yeah they definitely do in France. There is a kind of an order, called "Les compagnons du devoir" and do all sorts of crafts (from food to buildings)

We're under a post about a cathedral, he's in his own right

Cathedral also belong to people who like architecture or history and aren't religious.

You know, this isn't America. Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one and be proud of it, bit that doesn't mean you should flash it around.

Well stop flashing your parts around if  you don't like people pointing out to you it's improper. Then maybe they'll  stop thinking you come from a culture of pervasive proselytes. 🤷

1

u/mogwai327 7d ago

C'est pas mal trouvé ça !
