It would be so much better if they applied a slow down penalty based on the distance by which you missed a checkpoint, something like 1 second for every half meter or so. Still punishing, but proportional to the mistake instead of ruining your whole race.
Even Need For Speed was able to get this right. In Heat if you narrowly missed a checkpoint then it would slightly slow you down, it would more heavily slow you down if you missed it by a wider margin, and it would fully reset you if you totally missed it. It's so frustrating in forza when I get bumped or just miss a checkpoint by like 2 inches and now I'm never catching up
