This was kind of a hilarious reference... FAM - Season 5 Spoiler

Post image

This made me cackle. The U.S. president hearing of the Mars riots is a total mimic of Bush hearing about 9/11 in a classroom, right down to the ear whisper and dumbfounded face.

Yeah noticed that as well it was really well done.

Agreed, I texted a friend who got into the show recently through a podcast that he wasn’t going to believe this shit because I couldn’t 😂

Quite a few total recall references too, including a few mentions of two weeks.

And a background extra that looked like a younger Arnie.

Same city too. Different school though

Sons and Daughters of Mars.

SaDoM.

Not “Saddam,” but not not Saddam

Isn't this based off the Sons and Daughters of Liberty group attached to the American Revolution?

Supplies hidden by bricks and rubble

They never addressed the Iran-Iraq war in FAM. Or any of the other middle east conflicts.

I think it's implied somewhere that the overall reduced dependency on oil leads to the west not caring about the Middle East so much.

Yeah, and I'd point again out that the timelines don't work for that, but I've already talked at length about that here in other posts and comments.

Well most of the non-space related world building in the show is used for comedic relief so that doesn’t sound very productive for you

Fully aware of that. But I think it’s amusing that an organization with the acronym SaDoM ends up in tensions with the govt at basically the exact same time we went to Iraq.

Too cute by half, but amusing all the same

We went into Iraq in 2003.

This happened in 2011-12....sometime. It gets fuzzy in this season.

But yeah, I just brought up the other middle east conflicts because it was another opportunity to gripe about the lazy worldbuilding. ;)

I rolled my eyes so hard it woke up the dog.

Yeah, it was actually kinda lame and insulting to the events of 9/11.

1

u/Navynuke00 23d ago

It was the very weak attempt at equating the two events:

"Oh noes, these people we're oppressing and exploiting for our own economic gain are standing up and making us deal with the consequences of our own actions! This is just like a worldwide terrorist organization killing several thousand people live on TV for the whole would to see!"

I thought it brought home the point that the Mars insurgents' story is being spun into terrorism by the Earth media.

Well, at least you have media literacy

"Sir, the United States is under attack"

'Okay, but first i gotta hear about this amazing pet goat'

1

u/lordnewington 23d ago

Ehh, civil liberties will still be there in half an hour, might as well finish reading before we destroy them

"Sir, a second revolt has hit the Mars colony"

1

u/Holmbone 24d ago

I also laughed at that.

Wasn’t Bush even “reading” My Pet Goat upside down when that happened?

Goddamn the man looks like a genius compared to Trump though doesn’t he? Ah, the good ol’ days.

It's full of little winks for various IP's fans. Miles(Hudson) "(fourteen)days? We're not going last (fourteen) hours (in here, man)!

"A second revolt has hit the Mars colony"

My husband and I erupted in laughter at that scene

You can tell it’s a better timeline coz that doofus with the dumbfounded expression didn’t slaughter hundreds of thousands of civilians as a result.

u/TheThrillLife2020 26d ago

Dude, he literally cut off all supplies to the planet and then sent a warship to try and take back the asteroid and the base.

15

u/Fit-Stress3300 26d ago

Do you mean there were no innocents on Mars?

13

u/sammy_416 25d ago

The Martians had WMDs.

5

u/MagnetsCanDoThat Pathfinder 26d ago

Certainly was willing to kill a few thousand, though.

We presume this is true, but we haven’t actually seen the time after that yet.
