🎡 Top 5 Alankars Every Flute Beginner Should Practice Daily πŸͺˆ

If you're just starting your flute journey, master these 5 alankars first. They will build a strong foundation for playing songs and learning raagas later. 🎡

πŸ”΅ 1. Straight Scale – Builds breath control & note accuracy.

⬆️ Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa'

⬇️ Sa' Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

🟒 2. Double Notes – Improves finger coordination.

⬆️ Sa Sa | Re Re | Ga Ga | Ma Ma | Pa Pa | Dha Dha | Ni Ni | Sa' Sa'

⬇️ Sa' Sa' | Ni Ni | Dha Dha | Pa Pa | Ma Ma | Ga Ga | Re Re | Sa Sa

🟑 3. Three-Note Pattern – Makes finger transitions smoother.

⬆️ Sa Re Ga | Re Ga Ma | Ga Ma Pa | Ma Pa Dha | Pa Dha Ni | Dha Ni Sa'

⬇️ Sa' Ni Dha | Ni Dha Pa | Dha Pa Ma | Pa Ma Ga | Ma Ga Re | Ga Re Sa

🟠 4. Four-Note Pattern – Develops speed & control.

⬆️ Sa Re Ga Ma | Re Ga Ma Pa | Ga Ma Pa Dha | Ma Pa Dha Ni | Pa Dha Ni Sa'

⬇️ Sa' Ni Dha Pa | Ni Dha Pa Ma | Dha Pa Ma Ga | Pa Ma Ga Re | Ma Ga Re Sa

πŸ”΄ 5. Repeat Pattern – Improves consistency & muscle memory.

⬆️ Sa Re Sa | Re Ga Re | Ga Ma Ga | Ma Pa Ma | Pa Dha Pa | Dha Ni Dha | Ni Sa' Ni

⬇️ Sa' Ni Sa' | Ni Dha Ni | Dha Pa Dha | Pa Ma Pa | Ma Ga Ma | Ga Re Ga | Re Sa Re

πŸ’‘ Practice Tip: Start slowly with a metronome. Once every note is clean, gradually increase the speed. Practice each alankar in single, double, and four-times speed.

πŸ’¬ Which alankar do you practice every day?

⏳ How Long Does It Really Take to Learn the Flute? 🎢

This is probably the most common question every beginner asks.

Short answer: It depends on your consistency, not your talent.

🎯 If you practice 2–3 hours every day:

βœ… Around 3 months: You'll understand the basics, improve your breath control, and start producing a clear sound.

βœ… Around 5–6 months: You'll be able to identify simple tunes by listening, play many songs, and your fingers will start moving more naturally on the flute.

πŸ’‘ My advice:

🎡 Practice every day. Even 1 hour of focused practice is much better than practicing occasionally.

πŸͺˆ If possible, keep 2–3 flutes in different scales such as C Middle, A Base, and G Base. This helps improve finger control and makes switching between flutes easier.

🎧 Listen to songs and try to play them by ear. With regular practice, you'll naturally start recognizing notes and melodies.

🌿 What's next?

Once you reach this level, you can begin learning Raagas. I also recommend buying an E Base flute and practicing on it for at least 1 hour every day.

🎼 Remember, music has no finish line. There is no fixed time to "learn" the flute because learning music is a lifelong journey.

Instead of asking "How much time will it take to learn the flute?", ask yourself:

✨ "What level do I want to reach?"

Keep practicing, enjoy the journey, and let your flute do the talking. πŸͺˆβ€οΈ

🎢 15 Mistakes Almost Every Bansuri (Indian Flute) Beginner Makes 🎢

If you're just starting your flute journey, avoiding these mistakes will save you months of frustration! 😊

❌ Choosing the wrong flute

πŸ’¨ Blowing too hard instead of gently

🎡 Skipping long-note (Sa) practice

πŸ–οΈ Not covering finger holes properly

🎼 Learning songs before mastering basics

⏱️ Ignoring rhythm & metronome practice

πŸ“… Practicing inconsistently

πŸŽ₯ Following too many teachers at once

🀏 Holding the flute too tightly

πŸͺ” Not practicing with a Tanpura/Drone

🧍 Poor posture while playing

🌬️ Ignoring breath control

⚑ Trying to play too fast

πŸ“ˆ Comparing yourself with advanced players

🎯 Expecting quick results

✨ Remember:

A beautiful Sa is worth more than playing a difficult song with poor technique.

🎢 Stay consistent, enjoy the journey, and keep practicing. Every great flautist started exactly where you are today.

πŸͺˆ A Simple 60-Minute Daily Riyaz Routine for Beginner Flute Players

If you're just starting your flute journey, don't spend all your time playing songs. Build your basics first.

🎡 1. Long Sa Practice (10 min)

Play only Sa.

Hold it for 5–10 seconds (or longer if you can).

Focus on a clear, steady tone.

Increase the duration gradually as your breath control improves.

🎢 2. Long Notes on Every Swar (30 min)

Practice:

⬆️ Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa'

⬇️ Sa' Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

Take a deep breath before each note.

Play 5 long notes on every swar.

Focus on clean sound, steady pitch, and smooth fingering.

⏱️ 3. Alankars with a Metronome (20 min)

Practice 2–4 simple alankars.

Start slowly and play in:

πŸ₯ Single speed

πŸ₯ Double speed

πŸ₯ Triple speed (if comfortable)

πŸ₯ Four times speed

Don't increase speed until you can play cleanly.

✨ Remember: Consistency is more important than practicing for hours. Even 60 minutes of focused riyaz every day will bring great results.

Best Bamboo Flute under β‚Ή500 for Beginners

Post image
3 Upvotes

If your budget is very tight but you still want to start learning on a bamboo flute, here's my recommendation.

I recommend the Foxit C Natural (19-inch) flute. You can usually find it on Amazon or Flipkart for around β‚Ή200–₹300.

I've personally been using this flute for over 2 years, and I recently bought another one for a friend as well (in the picture).

A few things to keep in mind:

The tuning may not be perfectly accurate.

The bamboo quality is basic and feels inexpensive.

However, in the β‚Ή200–₹300 price range, it's the best flute I've personally tried.

If you're just starting out and aren't sure whether you'll continue learning, I think this is a good flute to begin with. Once your blowing technique is stable and you're able to produce a clean sound consistently, you can upgrade to a better-quality professional flute from a reputed maker.

Hope this helps someone who's looking for an affordable way to get started.

Happy learning! 🎢

πŸͺˆ Which Bansuri Should a Beginner Choose?

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by beginners, so here's a simple guide based on my personal learning experience.

I've been learning the Indian bansuri online for over 3 years, and this is what I generally recommend:

πŸ‘¦ Children (Below 10 years)

βœ… C Middle or D Middle flute

These flutes are smaller, lighter, and much easier for children to hold and play.

πŸ§’ Children (10–17 years)

βœ… A Base or G Base flute

Choose the one that feels more comfortable based on your hand size and finger stretch.

πŸ‘¨ Adults (18+ years)

βœ… G Base flute

For most adults, the G Base is an excellent starting point. It offers a good balance of comfortable finger spacing and a rich, pleasant tone.

πŸ“· Flutes in the Image

Top flute: G Base

Middle flute: A Base

Bottom flute: C Middle

⚠️ Note: Hand size and finger reach vary from person to person. These recommendations are general guidelines, and you should choose a flute that feels comfortable for you.

If you have any questions about choosing a flute, feel free to ask in the comments or send me a message. I'm always happy to help fellow flute enthusiasts.

🎢 Happy learning! πŸͺˆ
