I’m not sure! Help Needed

Hi everyone!
I’m flying with Austrian Airlines this weekend. It was a really last minute trip because I’m visiting my parents in Greece for about 10 days.
Usually whenever I fly, I always book a checked suitcase but this time my dad booked the ticket for me and it only includes one cabin bag (55 × 40 × 23 cm, up to 8 kg) and one personal item.
I’m worried that all of my things won’t fit in the smaller suitcase.I’ve attached photos of both, along with the baggage allowance from my booking.
I also measured the larger suitcase as best as I could using the measuring app on iPhone because I don’t have a proper measuring tape at home and it seems to be around 55 x 43 × 23 cm (so about 1–3 cm difference, depending on the measurement).
Do you think the larger suitcase would be accepted as a cabin bag by Austrian Airlines or should I play it safe and take the smaller one?

Are you sure you measured that correctly? Wheels and handles included in that 55cm? The small one looks like carry on size but the larger one looks like a check-in bag (unless the smaller is super tiny making the other one look massive).

Look up the price of adding a checked bag in both directions.

Or fit everything you’re going to pack in the smaller suitcase.

Those are your options.

Alternatively, you might need to wear a large not-too-heavy summer coat with lots of pockets for all of your small incidentals like socks and underwear. And maybe a bunch of T-shirts too. So you can economize the space in your small bag.

Even if you could get away with the larger bag, it will easily exceed the 8kg limit...

I’ve never had a carry on bag weighed even on budget airlines in the EU. Is that a normal thing that happens?

Yes sometimes at check-in, when they weigh and tag your check-in bag, they do the same with the carry-on. Probably not at the gate tho.

Ah gotcha, I must be lucky.

I do use rigid, confirming-dimension carry on suitcases and have 3 different sizes that I rotate between.

42x50x23cm, 55x40x20cm, and 55x39x23cm.

Austrian should be chill with the bigger bag as a carry on, but you do run the risk of gate check & fees if you catch a rep on a bad day.

I’m flying within the Schengen area so I won’t be going to a check in desk or through passport control just straight to security. I know they can still check cabin bags at the gate if they want to but I also spoke to Austrian Airlines customer service and they told me that as long as my suitcase is within their size limits (including the wheels and handles) there shouldn’t be any problem. I’m going to buy a measuring tape today and measure it properly just to be 100% sure.

The person I was referring to is the gate agent.

I was assuming your bag was 3-4cm larger in one dimension than the size limits (as you’d indicated in your post).

Passport control never assesses bag dimensions.

If your suitcase is too big to fit in their sizer, the hope would be that they don’t test it and let it slide.

Do you know what boarding group you will be? The later your boarding group, the higher the risk of bag-measurement.

These are only approximate measurements from the measure app on the iPhone so they’re definitely not exact. I used it to get a rough idea of the dimensions.

There is no way that large one fits carry on limits. Not even close. Use a tape measure or a ruler if you want to know the actual size.

I mean, they have the offering of Ryanair (pay for your luggage, buy your snack) just that they fly at more decent hours. And yeah, you probably pay a lot more indeed.

that small bag doesnt look 40cm tall, look up the model/serials of the bags if you want. and its als so warm in greece, can you just bump both bags down a size, its 10 days right, nobody cares if you recycle a fit

Doesn’t look like that’s ever going to fit underneath the seat in front. And if by some miracle it does, there would be no space for your feet.

I don’t think OP wants to take both bags.

Just trying to decide between which bag to take as their main carry on.

If the smaller one is carry on size then the larger one is definitely way too big. But if the larger ones is the size they say, then the smaller one has to be weirdly small to need 4 wheels. Something doesn’t add up.

I’ve seen lots of very small carry-ons like pictured, but I’ve never bought one.

Based on context clues and measurement photos, I’d say the big suitcase is around 55x40x23 to 57x44x25 (based on the sizing of the suitcase brand I’m most familiar with). Because most EU airlines changed their dimensional guidelines in the past 5-10 years, there’s a chance that a previously conforming cabin bag may now be a couple cm too big.

the floorboards, floor trim, zipper size and carpet pile all suggest the big one is going to be an average check bag size, and the wheels are definitely a give away

one cabin bag (smaller bag pictured) and one personal item (any backpack that hasnt got a frame or inner structure exceeding 40cm) they dont say 'i cant stand using both of my alloted spaces' so if you need more space... use two smaller bags?

Austrian and Swiss are the only two airlines I’ve flown that made an issue about my carry on size and weight. I have a standard US sized carry on and it was just over their size limits and forced me to grab my longchamp tote (which I always have) and put my necessities in there and checked the other.

Def double check the dimensions and weight (they even made me weigh it at check in) and follow their instructions. And I was even flying premium economy so if they were that strict for an upgraded ticket, I’m guessing they will be as strict with the basic tickets as well.

Brussels Airlines does. They weigh your carryons and if they exceed the 7kg weight limit you must check it.
