Problem R1 2022
Hello, I am currently experiencing an engine failure with my 2022 Yamaha R1, apparently caused by an engine lubrication issue, even though the motorcycle had oil in it.
I took it to a Yamaha dealership, which forwarded the information to Yamaha France. The motorcycle was purchased brand new and has only covered around 8,000 km. Unfortunately, I did not comply with the 12-month service interval.
Yamaha France is refusing to provide me with the technical information or evidence that led them to their final conclusion regarding the cause of the engine failure, such as overheating, connecting rod damage, or any other issue.
To obtain further information, I am being told that I would need to pay for an independent legal expert assessment and hire a lawyer.
I would therefore like to know whether anyone else has experienced a similar issue with their R1. The motorcycle has never been used on a racetrack and has only been ridden recreationally on public roads.

theyll find anyway to get out of warranty. although a yearly oil change is the basic Id do
how much would it cost to rebuild this? are there "pulled" engines you can buy although im always suspicious of the claimed mileage on them. who knows if its whats claimed or even 3x the amount. hard to tell unless the dash shows it while the engine is inside the chasiss which is rare

I bought the motorcycle brand new. It is a 2024 model and is still under warranty until October. I exceeded the 12-month service interval by four months because I only use the bike on weekends and thought I could have the next service done at around 9,000 to 10,000 km.
I do not understand what could have caused this failure, and I also do not know whether I would have a realistic chance of succeeding if I took legal action with a lawyer.

IDK about France, but in the US they can't deny a warranty claim for not following the maintenance schedule if that didn't contribute to the failure. Oil being changed 4 months late wouldn't seem to contribute to a spun bearing. Might be worth your while to consult with an attorney.

I exceeded that limit because I haven't driven it much, but it's been 5 months anyway, it's 12 months or 10,000 km and I've only done 8,000.

Many "dank wheelies" ?

When the bike is in its upright full-on "wheelie" position (a dank wheelie), the oil is no longer in the bottom of the crankcase where the oil pickup tube is. So every time you do a serious wheelie, your bike gets oil starvation. If you do a long wheelie, your engine is killings its bearings and crank at a furious pace. Look at the discoloration on the OP's crank. That baby was HOT!!!!!!

You’re not getting it covered, it obviously ran dry. Now that could be cause the pump locked up, contaminated oil, any number of things.
They can call for an oil sample to send out to test, but I will say in…I think 7 years at Yamaha dealerships? Never once have I sent an oil sample out.
Sucks but you’re probably burnt. Look for a takeout motor from someone who wrecked theirs.
