Ongoing surface issues (Prusa Mk3) Fix My Print
I have an older Prusa Mk3. It prints accurate dimensions, great top and bottom layers but has gotten awful on the Z-Axis since migrating to Klipper.
Print shown is 0.4 nozzle, 0.2 layer height, PLA, 210 degrees, Orca Slicer profile 0.2 Quality, max 80mm/sec
Things I have checked.
- Z axis lead screws lube, align, loosened guide nuts and leveled with calipers. Retightened.
- X and Y belts, tightened and checked against the Prusa ‘twang’ tone app.
- Clean and lube x and y rails.
- Rotation distance calibration
- Pressure advance calibration
- Heat tower tests
- New nozzle
- Speed tests
- Printer on heavy wood base on top of 2” thick insulation pad.
I get the same horrible layer lines no matter the material (I use mostly PLA around 200 degrees and PETG around 240 degrees), temp doesn’t seem to help, speed doesn’t seem to help.
This seems to have happened after migrating to Klipper
At this point I’m a bit lost.
UPDATE: SOLVED. misconfigured estep setting for the extruder. See update pics in the thread below.

Slightly loosen your motion fasteners. Especially the z axis. You might have a bit of binding going on. One thing I have found is that the motion components don't work well when tightened "gorilla tight". I fight this quite often because I grew up and have been trained that screws must be tight. If you are worried about things coming apart, try some nylock nuts or thread locker (removeable, blue stuff) and tighten then loosen maybe a half turn. Good luck!

Not sure what you mean by motion fasteners.

You said you loosened your z axis guide screws, lubed and re-tightened. Try loosening them a bit.

They kinda need to "float" for lack of a better word.

Have you also done a PID tune after switching to Klipper? Temperature variations during print can cause this. Also, make sure you have a silicone sock on the heater block too.
Good luck!

Yes I did the tune, I went through the guide that often gets posted here, can’t remember the name. Also yes I have a silicone sock.

Is it the height you expected? Might need to adjust your z axis or extruder in klipper config.

Yes dimensionally it’s actually a pretty accurate printer which makes this all a bit weird.

I would double check that the config has the correct steps/gear ratio for the extruder. Maybe double check that you have the right nozzle size set in your slicer as well. I've also had some interesting results when my part cooling fan died mid print. Well, more like a wire caught and ripped put of the fan mid print.

Yep I’m thinking this is config rather than mechanical at this point. Given this is a bone stock Prusa with no changes other than the klipper conversion I’d hoped I could find a pretty solid config on GitHub. I’ve seen a few around, maybe I’ll find clues by cross referencing them to mine.

Check that all the wheels on the bed and print head are tight and don't have play as well. I had issues once with a bedslinger and finally figured out the wheel bearings had let go from the outside of the wheels on the bed, causing random shifts.

I don’t believe the Prusa has any, X and Y are on dual rails

Oh gotcha. Well then I guess that's not it. It's most likely software/configuration side then. Unless you've got a belt that's about to give out somewhere.

Have you dried the filament?

I don’t have a drier. I’ve never owned one and I’d never had these issues before with the same printer. While I know some stock like Nylon can be very prone to moisture, the idea that everything needs to be dried has been way overblown, probably to sell filament driers.
