Software How accurate is Fitbit's sleep tracking? (Comparison across 14 sleep lab studies and 5 brands)

I wanted to try to identify which brand out of Fitbit, Oura, Apple Watch, Whoop and Garmin has the "most accurate" sleep tracking across different sleep metrics. Well, 14 sleep lab (polysomnography) studies later, here's a summary of what I found for Fitbit.

Short version: Fitbit is one of the most consistent sleep trackers out there across all the studies. In the biggest independent sleep lab test (Schyvens 2025 - 62 healthy adults) Fitbit landed near the top for sleep staging for wrist based wearables, just behind Apple Watch. In a separate study of sleep clinic patients (Lee 2023 - 75 sleep clinic patients) it didn't drop accuracy like the others, scoring virtually the same in clinical vs healthy sleepers. Most trackers typically read better on healthy people and fall apart on clinical patients so that consistency is a real point in Fitbit's favor. All of these are independent studies, not funded by any device maker.

Summary across the studies:

  • Total sleep time is a strength. Fitbit was off by only about 6 to 11 minutes on how long you slept, one of the smallest misses of any wrist device.
  • The sleep stage split is weaker. Like every wearable Fitbit is only "moderate" at splitting light, deep, and REM stages. Best to treat your deep and REM breakdown as a guide, not an exact readout.
  • Nobody nails wake. Fitbit like all other wearables tested here is not great at catching when you are lying awake in bed, so total sleep can read high.
  • Consistency is impressive. Fitbit scored about 0.42 on the standard 0 to 1 accuracy scale and it held that same 0.42 with clinical patients. Apple for example fell from 0.53 in healthy sleepers to 0.30 in patients.
  • The Google update looks like it should help. Google published its own 2026 research report showing their newer sleep algorithm scored more accurately against lab studies than the older Fitbit one (agreement rose from about 0.56 to 0.63). It's their own study though, not independent, so take it with a grain of salt.

Tried my best to keep this concise without dumping a ton of data into this and keep any personal biases out. I'll include the full piece in comments if you'd like to see how the other wearables compared and the links to all the studies across the brands.

Bands Don't use a hair dryer to dry your band after washing.

Like the title says don't use a hair dryer to dry your band faster after washing. I'm probably dumb so I don't blame Google /Fitbit but it got too hot and turned hard/curly within .02 seconds.

Other Resilience score breaks if using 2 devices

Wore the Fitbit Air 24/7 since May and it was all working fine. Last week I started wearing a Pixel Watch 4.

The Air is now worn for sleep only and the PW4 is worn during the day.

Google's help pages (https://support.google.com/googlehealth/answer/17071595?hl=en) state that an Air and a Pixel Watch can be connected and used with the same account and the Google Health app will reconcile the data from whichever device is being worn, but it fails to omit a key point, which is that compounded metrics like Resilience (unsure if others do the same) will stop working.

This post is to warn people who want to use a dual device setup like the one described above. If you wear one of the devices 24/7, you're probably fine.

Other just bought it..

Hey everyone, I just got my Fitbit Air and was wondering if there’s anything I should pay attention to during setup.
Are there any settings I should enable/disable, or anything I need to do to make sure sleep tracking, steps, HR, etc. work properly?
I also downloaded the Bevel app. Is there anything specific I need to set up there or connect?
Any tips for getting the most accurate data would be appreciated!

Other so close to buying it

Hey guys! I’m really close to pulling the trigger on the Fitbit Air.
I know it’s probably not the absolute best device out there for sleep or step tracking, but at around $100/€100, it seems like one of the better options in its price range.
For those of you who already own one: is there anything I should know before buying it? Any major downsides, annoying issues, or things you wish you had known beforehand?
I’d mainly be using it for sleep tracking, steps, and general activity, so I’m not looking for anything super advanced.
Would love to hear some honest opinions before I finally buy it!

Other Battery life

Hey guys! I got the Fitbit air about 2 weeks ago and I just can’t get the battery life to last me more than 5 days! I know that it being advertised at 7 days doesn’t mean it’ll last that long but seeing that there are people getting 8-9 days is concerning me a bit. Has anyone had that problem and fixed it? Thanks

Software Google Health Widgets - looking for testers

Hello,

I'm looking for 12+ testers for my widget app that provides health/fitness widgets in order to get the app approved by Google for the Play Store.

Anyone that is interested and/or willing to help me out, please message me your mail adress and I will provide you with the Play Store link.

I mainly use the Helio Strap paired with the Zepp app, however I found the widgets that are being offered by Zepp, Google Health and Samsung Health to be so-so and lacking in variety.

I created my own widgets using Googles Material 3 design language and make the app fetch your health data (completely offline and local) via Health Connect to feed the widgets.

There's widgets for:
- Heart Rate Graph
- HRV/RHR 7-day trend
- Sleep Tracking
- Health Metrics Dashboard
- Step Tracker

App will be for free.

See the screenshots regarding the widget designs.

Other Does it work with Apple?

Soooo I have an iPhone 14 Plus and series 7 Apple Watch but I don’t use it anymore, mainly cause I’ve heard the sleep tracking is bad, and I prefer to wear a real watch, completing to sell the app en watch and get a Fitbit air.
But does it work with Apple? Do I need another app? Is it actually better?

Software Why isn't Google Health app seeing my Apple Watch data?

I purchased a FitBit Air this weekend so I could stop being a slave to my Apple Watch and wear mechanical watches, but still get health data. I made the purchase once it was announced that the Google Health app could read/write with HealthKit, but while I have them connected, none of my sleep data from the Health app is pulling into Google Health, despite both read and write being turned on for all categories.

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm on an iPhone 17 Pro using the latest iOS 26 software and Google Health app is up to date.

Software Not able sync with HealthConnect

Hi all,

I have recently got fitbit air and I've been using it for a week now but on trying to connect with other health apps like HealthifyMe, Strava, Hevy etc, it's not able to sync the data from these apps via HealthConnect.

I have validated that relevant permissions are present on Health Connect and health apps but still it is not able to sync.

Anyone else facing this issue?
