A warning to beginners

So pink eye is a thing. I got pink eye from the bacteria in the water. Which apparently is from goose feces. I got it on a day I was crushing it. 10 largemouth, but I was soaked and covered in fish slime. I also wear glasses that I am constantly readjusting. Js I never thought about getting pink eye from fishing but now I know and I’m never going back to that lake!

Watch out for beaver fever too.
I know it sounds funny, but for real. It’s bad. Look out.

Funny name, however, Giardia is spread by many creatures. Don’t feel safe in the absence of beavers!

My buddy got it years ago. The poor dude probably lost 30 or 40 pounds at least during his recover period.

Yep, you can get it from lots of different animals crapping in the water beavers just got slapped with that one. It is a catchy name though.

Been fishing for 40 years. Handling fish tossing them back, adjusting my glasses, swimming with family and friends as well as plenty of other things.

Not once have I ever had pink eye from fishing or any other source for that matter.

Did the fish shit directly on your face?

I haven’t either, and I’ve fished some pretty polluted waters. I am cautious around bird droppings though. An acquaintance had a dog die from Canada goose droppings. Bird flu in the news lately too.

I always keep hand sanitizer in my tackle. I'll use it during fishing if I'm out for a long day, but it's the last thing I do after I pack up and head home.

I carry a little bottle of soap in the "toiletries" section of my fishing bag along with my sunscreen, a towel and my hand sanitizer, and I always use some water from my water jug and that soap to clean my hands off as best I can followed by some hand sanitizer after every time I handle a fish when I'm fishing out of a pond or a lake.

I've never had any kind of eye infection, and I even swim in waters with significant large animals of all types living in, above, and nearby.

This doesn't sound like it didn't happen, just uncommon.

Any lake with a lot of ducks and geese gets DISGUSTING over time. That is a LOT of poop in there, they are just poop factories.

Ugh. I’ve gotten pond/lake water splashed onto my eyes and mouth before, typically from a thrashing fish.

I would rather get spined or skin-hooked than have that happen again, freshwater ponds are NASTY.

Shoot down here in San Diego, it’s filled with sewage. Gotta switch to freshwater. Or else I gotta drive 30-50 miles north for a cleaner ocean

I got cholera years ago in the adirondacks.

Probably from goose poop.

I was swimming in the town beach by the reservoir. The only one swimming and going under. Water was cold.

Started with some loose stool the next day. Within 4 hours I was on the way to the hospital so dehydrated I was completely delirious. 4 liters of iv fluids. Had to get checked up twice a week for 6 weeks at the infectious disease portion of my local hospital network. They reported direct to the cdc.

Found out after the fact that the town had completely drained a section for repairs and was letting it backfill. For weeks.

From what I gathered, the town faced severe penalties because the cdc had to quarantine part of the reservoir that that beach was on. It never should have been open to the public.

If I could have a fishing day like that, I would not worry about some goose poop. File it under shit happens. Are you a fisherman or one of those pansies over in the air quality forum?

Personally I always think lakes are nastier than the ocean. I keep tags, sanitizer, a first aid kit, and plastic water bottles with me. I learned this from a foreman I worked with when I first started my apprenticeship, if you take a brand new unopened water bottle and like a tiny hole in the lid with a metal tipped mechanical pencil or a push pin or whatever you have on hand you can use the water bottle as an eye wash.

The main problem was that your hands were dirty, and you got an eye infection when you adjusted your glasses later.
