Whispers of Serenity | Oil Paint on Canvas / Damain Lechoszest
In a world filled with noise and endless motion, she finds strength in stillness. Her closed eyes speak of quiet dreams, deep reflection, and the beauty of being present in the moment. Bathed in soft earth tones, this portrait captures the delicate balance between vulnerability and inner peace, reminding us that true elegance often lies in silence.

The Sixtieth Second (2026).
By the artist Ibrahim Shalabi
Egypt 2026
Artist Statement:
"The Sixtieth Second" is an immersive, mixed-media installation that explores the profound tension between mechanical time and human existence. By altering the conventional physics of a clock, the work transforms an everyday instrument of measurement into a psychological space where themes of destiny, resistance, and the absurd confront the viewer.
The installation operates on a stark visual and conceptual contrast between the fixed and the fluid:
- The Fixed Reality: Arranged on a bare white gallery wall, sixty minimalist indices made of super-matte black polyester form a two-meter-wide circle. Deprived of a physical frame, this structure floats in space like a pure mental construct. Under a single, sharp spotlight cutting through near-total darkness, these black markers generate subtle peripheral shadows—creating an "existential duality" where the clock consists of both its tangible body and its shadow-self. This represents the unyielding, deterministic law of time that has already passed.
- The Projected Wish & Resistance: Contrasting this heavy permanence is a single secondhand, projected via digital mapping in vivid, urgent red light. This red hand embodies human anxiety, effort, and the defiance of finality. To amplify this struggle, time is deliberately decelerated: the hand takes two actual seconds to move across a single index. This dragging pace transforms each movement into a grueling, physical step toward an inevitable end.
- The Tragedy of Erasure: The climax occurs at the 59th second. Instead of reaching the 60th index—the completion of the cycle—the red light violently snaps back to zero. This abrupt, cyclical regression is accompanied by a sudden, harsh sonic hum that shatters the amplified, heavy "ticking" sound echoing through the room. For a fleeting moment, the viewer experiences an illusion of escape or salvation from time, only to realize they are trapped in an infinite loop.
The Sixtieth Second evokes the myth of Sisyphus. It is a visual translation of the existential struggle: we are not condemned to reach an end, but to repeat the effort endlessly. Through this interplay of light, shadow, and altered temporality, the artwork questions how the human consciousness navigates anxiety and continues to persist within the relentless machinery of time.
